One thing I miss about buying standard DVDs is the cool animated menu screens. Sometimes, that was the only way to find "easter eggs". Why can't they use the same type of animated menu screens on Blu-Rays?

You must have only encountered Warner BDs thus far.

Paramount's Deep Impact BD is pretty horrible on the menu scene as well. It looks like first Sd DVD menus.

Okay, call me stupid but how do you use a BluRay disc without a menu screen?

Okay, call me stupid but how do you use a BluRay disc without a menu screen? In the case of the overwhelming majority of Warner titles, the movie starts playing immediately (well, maybe after a couple of trailers...), and if you want to adjust something, you use the popup menu.

I wish WB would put a menu in. I like actually being able to select things without the movie starting first. WB's lack of a menu is like Paramount's lack of disc art.

I thought it was WB's way of giving you a theatre experience where the film starts right after the previews. I dont like it either. I want all movies to go straight to a menu, skpi the previews, ads, etc. I paid for it and shouldnt be forced to go through a bunch of items to get to the menu or movie. Save that for rental copies.

WB discs have menus. They look just like the pop-up menu, but they definitely exist.

I remember when DVD started everyone complained about the menu. People were used to VHS and LD where the movie would start right away. As long as the default audio is set to HD I prefer the movie to start right away. Menus are OK but it bugs me when they are overly animated and you have to wait to pick a setting or start the movie.

I prefer menus I like to put the disc in and make popcorn. I prefer if the movie doesn't automatically start playing then I need to pause it.

You're referring to the special features menu that pops up after the movie ends, I take it?

No, during the movie. Press the pop-up menu button to access the PAUSE, LANGUAGES, SCENE SELECTIONS, and SPECIAL FEATURES menu options.
Many Warner BDs default to DD 640k so upon immediately seeing the Warner logo, press the pop-up menu button to choose LANGUAGES then select the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 option (if its there).

Put in a Disney disc and you'll have time to make dinner, eat it, & then make the popcorn.

You're referring to the special features menu that pops up after the movie ends, I take it?Yes. But you can jump to it just like you would any other menu, and it seems odd to me that people would insist on going to a menu to change audio or subtitles, since there have been audio/subtitles buttons on DVD remotes forever, and I don't hear complaints about those.

Almost every Blu-ray I have has some kind of accessible menu screen. Can you clarify your complaint?

I thought the OP was referring to menus that were standalone. All those menus are part of the pop-up menu and the movie continues to play while you have them open.

I just don't like having to screw around with it once the movie starts. But I agree it's no big deal to not have the menu in the beginning in fact I prefer it.

I don't mind the "interactive" menu versus the "old" static DVD menus that you had to jump out of the movie to access. And like most folks here, I only go into it to check audio settings and access special features. Also, to the Warner Bros. comment, I do wish the movie would not immediately start.

What specifically is your issue with it? Is it just because it doesn't have some blaring music and a bunch of annoying animations all over it? I don't know, for me, sometimes simplicity is better....while the Deep Impact main menu may be a bit generic, I prefer it to other ones that just too busy and needlessly complicated, not to mention waste a lot of time just to load....

Since when have animated menus been cool?
I can't stand animated menus, especially ones you can't skip over, they are pointless. All I want to do is watch the movie or just get to the stupid menu. I'm fine with a pop up menu, but in reality as stated above Warner is one of the only companies to start the movie right away.

Sorry...I should have used a better explanation on my original post. The menu screens I am referring to are the "animated" style on standard DVDs opposed to the "list" style menus on Blu-Rays. For Example: The Wizard of Oz Blu-Ray has the special features bar that you can access on the bottom of the screen, but that's as far as the animation goes. I have an older standard DVD of the Wizard of Oz that has a fun Kansas menu screen with twisters and sound effects to access special features, and then there's the Emerald City screen where you can access other special features. That's what I'm talking about. To each his own, I guess. I think animated menu screens are fun and enhance the movie experience. I don't understand why they can't do this with Blu-Rays.

Most titles that are not from Warner do have animated menus. Many have seamless menus, where sub-menus come up immediately upon making a selection from the menu--thus eliminating the menu transitions that DVD couldn't avoid. This, IMO, is a nice feature.

They can. There are many, many BDs with animated menus. I think your complaint is not with Blu-ray, but with WB specifically, which typically only uses static menu screens on Blu-ray for some reason.

I just started buying Blu-Rays, so coincidentally all the ones I purchased so far are probably WBs. I didn't check. Thanks for clarifiying this!

Ah, that explains it. For a look at what Blu-ray menus can be, check out any of the Pixar movies, Pirates of the Caribbean or T2: Skynet Edition, just to name a few.
