In light of the current national discussion re: what constitutes racism, it occurred to me that someone is missing a financial opportunity here. An enterprising soul could "borrow" Jeff Foxworthy's worn-out (but still lucrative) "Redneck" theme & adapt it.

Knowing the creative minds at work in Otterville, it would be interesting to see what suggestions might be put forth. I'll get the ball rolling with a very lame one...first thing that popped into my head. Half-baked (or maybe only 1/4-baked), but here it is:

If your child refers to chocolate milk as "Obama milk", you might be a racist.

(Pretty sad, I know, but felt like I should contribute something if I wanted others to participate. At least the bar has been set very low...below ground level, if you will).

You might be a racist if you subscribe to a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

If you are discussing healthcare and you are opposed to it, you might be a racist.

If you voted for Obama but now think he is on the wrong path, you might be a racist.

The OP failed, but Dave's got the right idea.

The format is basicly: "________(fill in the blank Obama policy or position)_________, then you might be a racist."

If you think the US should have a missle shield in Eastern Europe, you might be a racist.

If you display a rebel flag, you MAY be a racist. Or maybe not.

If you think that no one who displays a rebel flag is a racist, you are not a racist, but you are naive.

If you made a sign that says "The Cleveland Zoo has an African lion, and Washington DC has a lyin' african, you're most likely racist.

If you agree with Pat Buchanan that our european values are being undermined by evil furriners, you ARE a racist.

More precisely, you gave the wrong answers to these 4 questions:

Here’s a series of statements about race relations in the U.S. For each one, please tell me if you strongly agree, agree, neither agree nor disagree, disagree, or strongly disagree with each one.

Irish, Italians, Jewish, and many other minorities overcame prejudice and worked their way up. Blacks should do the same without any special favors.
Over the past few years blacks have gotten less than they deserve.
It’s really a matter of some people not trying hard enough; if blacks would only try harder they could be just as well off as whites.
Generations of slavery and discrimination have created conditions that make it difficult for blacks to work their way out of the lower class.

<a href = "http://voices.washingtonpost.com/shortstack/2009/09/health_care_race_and_political.html">"...you oppose health care reform."</a> Jesus Christ that's a horrifying article! How come no one in this country wants to discus class distinctions? It's like we're allergic to the concept. That article wants to assert that "racial resentment" and opposition to health care reform are positively correlated. Did it ever occur to them that the higher classes oppose health care reform out of their own economic self-interest, and that racism (while they may harbor it) is irrelevent to the argument? It's class, and money, not fucking race.

So, if I am reading it correctly, everyone hated Clinton's reform idea, but racism had no part of it. Now there is the same opposition to Obama's reform idea, but it is based on racism.

Is that right?

We hated Clinton's idea because it was a bad idea, but we hate the same idea from Obama because he is black?

Well, it really is time for this half-baked idea to disappear.

The original inspiration, of course, was to respond to recent accusations in the media by some well-known people...the idea being to show the ludicrousness of going to extreme lengths to see the racial boogeyman lurking everywhere (in addition to commenting on the hypocrisy of those who cry racism while uttering racist epithets).

However, as one poster said, the thread was a failure. Partly due to my lack of wit or failure to make the sarcasm evident in the initial post; partly due to the topic being largely off-limits (say, as opposed to "You might be a feminist..."); partly due to the fact that one has to really demonstrate actual bigotry for such a "joke" to work. It might have been clearer (although no funnier) if I had said, "If you don't like chocolate milk, you might be a racist".

The third aspect is really the point. If one cries "wolf" (or, in this case, "racist") at every perceived slight, it lessens the impact of the word when a real case comes along. Reactions to recent political events ascribing racial motives to every "insult" do this very thing, IMHO. I strongly disagree with those liberal columnists who have suggested that the accusations have brought about a welcome & long overdue discussion, but then, I didn't hear the subliminal "boy" after the words "you lie", either.

If we're going to start flinging around the "racist" accusation every time a minority person is criticized in a manner perceived to be rude or "unprecedented", then we at least need to know what constitutes racism (hence the sarcastic nature of this thread). I treated the recent accusations as a joke because I thought that's what they deserved...derision. If I had put it in the Carter thread, it might have been clearer what I was getting at. Then again, maybe not.

At least there were some good comments, though, especially from those who understood the impetus for the thread (those who didn't think a thread for racial stereotypes jokes just appeared in the political thread without any correlation to recent events). Even those who misunderstood had some entertaining comments.

Contrawise, if one dismisses every complaint of racism as mere "wolf" cries, it lessens the impact of legitimate disagreements over whether a particular complaint of perceived racism is fair.
