Anyone have any info on this receiver? Just picked it up - sort of an "impulse" buy - but was wondering if it was worth it. How does it compare to other sub-$300 receivers, like the JVC 6000?

It's an OK receiver. It lacks stuff like S-Video in, optical cable for digital, and some of the other higher end extras. I know that Onkyo has a $299 receiver that is DD and DTS. It is probably better than the Kenwood.

I agree...
If you can take it back I would go with the Onkyo 484... DD and DTS and more importantly discrete amplification (much cleaner sound). The Onkyo also bests the Kenwood on material quality and overall build quality. All in all it is hard to go wrong with Onkyo.
My belief is that Kenwood receivers dont start to get good until you get into the higher end VR series (I have a VR3090).

Actually, it has DD, DTS, 4 s-video inputs, optical (and coaxial) inputs - 3, I think - and a six-channel input.

Actually the Onkyo 484 does not have S-Video, you have to go two levels up to the 676 to get S-vid switching.

I'm not sure about the 407, but on the previous line of receivers they have used really bad designs.
They would put the amplifier section and heatsink underneath the dsp circuits. As you can imagine, heat would often ruin the chips in extended use. They would also claim 100x5 watts, but in reality would only get about 50x5 watts (Even their $1000+ models would only put out the wattage of their $300 models.)
I've seen a review of one of their recent recievers (top of the line one), and they seem to have gotten the honest 100x5 watt rating. As for the layout, I have no idea as to what they did.

hehe, hinkfo, did you get it at Fry's?
Fry's Electronics has them on sale for $199 (yes, $199. That is correct one-hundred and ninety-nine dollars). At that price, is it worth it? I brought one home, and I do not think it would have been woth the $300 MSRP, but for $199, I don't think it is bad, at all. Plus, I had been looking for a cheap receiver to go upstairs and compliment my PS2 (when I get one in Oct.).
