In every thread, certain words are hyperlinked, and moving your mouse over them causes pop-up ads to appear. Please tell me this is only temporary.

Hmm, I haven't noticed yet. Didn't they do this before as a "trial" run but only for certain people?

I've been going thread to thread for a bit and haven't seen this a single time.

Ah the joys of third-party hyperlinking.

You probably have spyware on your system and/or a crappy toolbar program.

I've been seeing these for months, maybe a year.

I thought spyware was strictly a PC problem? For the record, I'm using Firefox 3.5.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.7. I've also never come across these ads on any other websites I frequent.

I haven't seen this either. I'd imagine it would suck.

I also don't see anything like that, on IE or Firefox. Where do the links take you? That might be an indicator of what toolbar/add-on/whatever is causing it.
Well, reading up on Kontera does seem to indicate it is an ad system controlled by the site.
I also read that AdBlock and IE7Pro can block these things, and since I have them installed, maybe that's why I don't see those links. However, I tried disabling AdBlock in Firefox, and I did not get the links (I did get to see lots of other ads that I don't normally see), so I'm not sure what's happening.

Did you try it in Safari, just for grins?

Noirfan, the fact that you're the only one seeing this indicates to me that you should do a full Spyware scan on your system.

I did a spyware search and didn't find any, although I had two "tracking cookies". I deleted them, and now am ad-free.

fyi, in case you aren't aware, it's against DVDTalk policy to use ad blocking software.
DVD Talk Membership is not free, the membership fee (which is thirty dollars per year) is paid on your behalf by the advertisers on this site. As such you agree not to use any ad blocking or suppression software or be liable for your membership fee.

I've gotten the ads a few times in the past. It usually goes away after awhile.
