Should I go out and purchase a new TV and DVD player w/ component connections? I have heard that with a TV smaller than a projection TV the difference is difficult to see. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

I would not just discard my TV just because it doesn't have component inputs, so don't just dump your current set. But, if your on the market, then by all means do look for component inputs and do get it if the price is not outrageous.
I have two Tosh direct view sets with component inputs (32" and 27"). The 32" set used to be my main set and I could easily see the difference between component and s-vid, using my then Sony 550. It is a little harder to see the difference on the 27", but there is a difference.
Plus component inputs will be helpful for the future when you will need to get some type of set-top-box to decode digital signals. Just as you will get a better picture today using component inputs, you will get a better picture tomorrow using a digital STB.
I could go on and on about the technical reasons why component is better than either s-vid or composite, but the gist is that component signals have the advantage of not using the sets internal color filters. You get a "purer" signal by not using the filters and most importantly you get a "truer" signal because the filters are made to intentionally distort some colors.
Component inputs are a plus and are worth paying a little more for.
