I was all set and ready to buy this thing for $189, considering all the good reviews I'd heard, but then read some reviews how it wouldn't play Blues Brothers, and then how it choked when it hit the Abyss "multi-angle" scenes.
Someone else then commented how this player might not be able to handle the Seamless Branching Discs, of which Stargate is among them.....now, this really bummed me out. Anyone know if this is a problem that Toshiba has fixed, or do I need to look at another player.
I'm hoping to find a player for less than $250 bucks that "does it all", including pass a DTS signal to my receiver.
????
Yes it handles seemless branching. IF my technical knowledge served, seemless branching is even used so that you can switch soundtracks on the fly, which you can't do on older DVD's because they were not created with seemless brandhing. Yes older Firmware Tosh. SD1200's choke on Abyss Multipod, and other discs, but most lower end DVDs' in the 200-300$ range have some rare nusance problems with certain "problem discs." That's what firmware updates are for and why, if you find a problem, you talk to your DVD manufacturers technical support http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif
If my definition and understanding of seemless branching is flawed, let me know, and i'll nix the comments on that. But I do know it handles seemless branching, cause most new DVD's are by default manufactured in seemless branching (and I swear I know for certain atleast a few of my DVDs are seemless in nature). It would be pointless if it didnt handle it, the player would be as obsolete as 8-track or betamax in no time http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif
Oh, btw, SD-1200 is a a fairly decent low/mid player. DD/DTS sound passing, and good playback. Only rants some people seem have with it is the remote havign small buttons too close together and not being backlit (I can see the thing about teh remote buttons, but what can you expect for el-cheapo... go buy a learning universal remote if you must http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/wink.gif Also people seem to rant about the Toshiba's handling of downcoversion of anamorphic titles on 4x3 TV's. I don't seem to mind the overal picture personally on my 32" JVC, it looks good to me. It has composite/s-vid/component outputs, but only a coax Digital out, which can be argued for weeks which is better. Personally I'm in the camp that .. its a digital signal, its either there, or it isn't. Granted fibre-opt is a light pulse, so electronic interferance has no bearing on it, but *shrug* its a matter of personal pref to the mostpart and how much money your willing to spend on cabling.
I say, if you can find the SD-1200 dirt cheap... go for it http://talk.dvdtalk.com/ubb/smile.gif
