.Variety reports that Frank Darabont will bring the Image Comics series THE WALKING DEAD to the screen for the AMC cable network. He’ll write and direct the adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s stories of a cop who tries to help other survivors find safety in a world overtaken by zombies.
Genre veteran Gale Anne Hurd of Valhalla Motion Pictures and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion will executive-produce the TV series, which has yet to settle on a production studio. “These are two world-class filmmakers who are also brilliant storytellers with experience in the fantasy genre,” AMC senior vice president Joel Stillerman tells the trade of Darabont and Hurd. He also extols the qualities of the source material: “This is not about zombies popping out of closets. This is a story about survival, and the dynamics of what happens when a group is forced to survive under these circumstances. The world [in THE WALKING DEAD] is portrayed in a smart, sophisticated way.” Darabont, who started out as a scripter on Chuck Russell’s A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 and THE BLOB, is best known for writing and directing the Stephen King adaptations THE MIST, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE.
