Six Feet Under - show lost me when...
Spoiler:
I thought it became a little unlike what the show was about up to that point, and didn't appreciate being "manipulated," so I just tuned out.
Upon hearing about how great the series finale was, I am thinking of getting back into the show. But first I must know..................

If you're talking about his operation table "death" that occurred at the end of Season 2/beginning of Season 3, then, yes, Nate Jr. was revived.
Many people tend to think that the series lost its way the last 2 seasons or so. Maybe the story lines weren't as strong but I feel the characters stayed true to themselves throughout. I blindly purchased the complete series and watched the entire series in about a week's time so that may why I wasn't as critical - I was absorbed by it. You at least owe it to yourself to watch the series finale but, in my opinion, the full effect of that episode can only be felt if you've invested some time and, strangely, affection, to the characters themselves.
As for as drama is concerned, it has to be my favorite series (I tend to favor comedy shows for TV and prefer my movies a little darker).

I'm talking about specifically when......
you know how the show always opens with the death of a person (shows how they died - always my favorite part of the show), and they announce their names with their birth and death dates with a white background, well, they did that with
now, if they were going to revive him, why taint the show like that? That white background and the name of the person who died was always "fact."

Well, if I can recall correctly, there is a white screen scene soon after that erases his death. Kind of cheesy, I suppose, but it ends up becoming a big point in the season that Nate literally died on the operating table and was subsequently brought back to life. For your own viewing (dis)pleasure, I recommend you give it another shot.

I almost stopped watching the show when
I'm glad I stuck with it because that last season was awesome and the last episode still makes me cry.

It's heresy, I know, but I've always thought the ending is over-rated. It's good, but it's not that good. Then again, I'm one of those insane people who really liked the ending of the Sopranos. Still, on the whole, Six Feet Under is great -- well worth watching all the way through.

And I too enjoyed the Sopranos ending, totally felt like it was a clever and unique way to end the series. But that's a whole other conversation that I'm sure everyone has already partaken in.

Still need to finish The Wire, Sopranos, and Homicide, but as of now, Six Feet Under is nearly perfect from beginning to end, and the best television drama I've seen.
Think I'll go chronologically, and watch Homicide first.

You weren't manipulated, really. Not sure why I should spoil, but just in case:
-------
Season 3 was a definite turning point for the show. The show lost the usual quirky bids for laughter, but I don't think it hurt the show at all. It only got better (and the third season it my favorite). The characters became much more three dimensional and made more questionable choices as they went through life. The hard times in our lives aren't always solved by making a sarcastic quip and the writers knew that.

The only thing that almost made me check out on the series was the Lili Taylor stuff. I don't mind her as an actress but once she was with Nate it was grating as hell. It was nice when it ended.

Season 3 and 4 stumbled a bit but season 5 was fantastic and the finale is not the least bit overrated. Phenomenal tv!
