Are the Saturday Night Live Season Sets continuing on?
I am going to start to collect season 1 and so on very soon. I am a completest and even though I really don't care for the early years. I am waiting for the Chris Farley,David Spade, Will Ferrell years.
Anyone know if they are planning to continue on with the releases?

At the rate they're going, it'll be years before we see the Farley/Ferrell seasons.

Yeah, but they've gone through all the Belushi/Aykroyd years. If they're smart they'll just dump the next couple of seasons in no-frills sets and move quickly to the Eddie Murphy years.

They are in a weird place now with the sets. The next couple of seasons aren't very good ones. I could see them skipping to Murphy, but even those seasons weren't that great overall. Not sure if they will skip around or just try and stay in order.

Classic episodes. They can't just give up after the first five years. I realize those seasons have their fans, but I am a child of the mid 80's era and am dying to see those again. I watched most of them during first run and can't wait to see them again.

I've been collecting the LEs of all the seasons and I really hope to see every year released on DVD. Let's not forget that each season has unique music guests/performances and there's bound to be something of interest in even the worst year, even if only for historical purposes.

I don't see why not. It can't be that expensive to package the individual seasons, and everybody has their favorite era. The popularity of TV on DVD won't last forever - SNL should be taking advantage while they can.

Eddie Murphy was gone from the cast by 1984. After the 5th final season with the original cast, Lorne Michaels left and Jean Doumanian took over. The next season (6th) only had 13 episodes but Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy were both in the cast. Eddie started out as a featured player and gradually showed up in more sketches. At the end of season 9, he left but came back to host in season 10.
Dick Ebersol took over in Season 7.
The horrible season was 11 with Joan Cusack, Robert Downey, Jr., Anthony Michael Hall, Randy Quaid, Terry Sweeny & Danitra Vance.
Season 6 had Denny Dillon, Gilbert Gottfried, Gail Matthius, Joe Piscopo, Ann Risley, Charles Rocket, Wendy Malick, Matthew Laurence, Eddie Murphy.
Lorne Michaels returned for season 12 adding Dana Carvey and Phil Hartman to the cast and firing almost everyone else except for Jon Lovitz and Nora Dunn.
I don't think they should skip any seasons. It's probably taking time to clear all the music.

I actually like season 11, Loren Michaels actually came back for season 11, not season 12. So he's the one that picked Downey Jr, Cusack, Hall, etc. I think that season was short as well, but it had some great sketches and some of my favorite episodes (I particularly love the Pee Wee Herman episode). Generally though season 12 is the season where most people came back on board with SNL.
If they jumped around I could see them starting with Season 12.
I think there's some decent stuff on the 80-85 seasons, but aside from some of us freaks who enjoy watching things for historical, nostaligic or legitimate enjoyment reasons, I don't see a huge audience for those seasons.

With all the talk of the "down" years I'm surprised no one has mentioned 1994. aka the Janeane Garofalo, Chris Elliot and Jay Mohr year. On their own I enjoy these people. On SNL they were terrible.
The rest of the cast had some of the greats(Sandler, Farley, Nealon, Franken, Spade, Meadows, Myers & MacDonald). Stacked, right?, but for some reason that year was abysmal.

I havent picked any of the season sets up, as geting all of the seasons is going to be pretty daunting. They do seem to be releasing the sets quickly, which is nice. I can't imagine that the music rights are an easy project on these sets. Back in the early days, home video releases couldnt have been anythign that the powers that be were thinking of. I hope they continue releasing these sets.

I, too, am a completist and have been holding off on these until they, at a minimum, get through the farley/spade/hartman/carvey/rock/nealon/meyers/sandler years. For me, those are the best years. A lot of stuff in the best of sets are cut down and a lot of stuff was cut in the syndicated episodes. Personally, I don't care too much about the music, although I can appreciate those who value that.
