Not a hoax! Not a dream! Not an imaginary story! It's ...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/Comics%20Sheep%202/vs-sheep.jpg

Never played before? I don't believe you exist. Everyone on the forum has played one of these by now. But just in case, here are the ...

<ul>Rules<br>
<li> The object of the game is to out-think everyone by picking answers to questions that are the most common (<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">Sheep</font>) or least common (<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">Reverse Sheep</font>), but still correct.
<li> Example <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">Sheep</font> question: "Name a superheo." A good answer would be Superman and a bad answer might be Ragman.
<li> Example <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">Reverse Sheep</font> question: "Name a comic book writer". Geoff Johns might be a bad answer, but Don MacGreggor might be a good answer. (Unless you think everyone else is trying to go as obscure as possible, in which case you might outsmart them by naming Geoff Johns).
<li> Sheep scores are tallied as negative numbers. Reverse Sheep scores are tallied as positive numbers. The lowest score wins.
<li> The answers to each question are tallied up. Wrong answers in Reverse Sheep are scored two points above the most common answer. This penalty is multiplied by the Lightning Round Multiplier. Wrong answers in Sheep are not penalized.
<li> Certain rounds are considered Lightning Rounds (designated by a multiplier, such as ×2). In these rounds, scores are adjusted by the <u>number on the multiplier</u>. A wrong answer still gets a +4 penalty in a ×2 round and a +6 penalty in a ×3 round, and so on. In a sheep round, a wrong answer scores normally.
<li> Important Google Rule: The assumption is that you will not use Google, Wikipedia, etc. You may choose to do so. However, if you so choose, you must indicate each answer for which you have used an outside resource by placing an asterisk (*) before the answer. You will be penalized one point for your first asterisked answer, two points for your second asterisked answer, three points for your third asterisked answer, and so on. Google penalties are not multiplied on a question with a multiplier.
<li> Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers or the question itself. Those who do not do this will be penalized 10 points right off the bat.
<li> Note: Be creative with your answers, but don't be stupid.
<li> Sheep questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">S:</font>, Reverse Sheep questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">R:</font>.
<li> Unique Bonus: Reverse Sheep questions will generate additional bonus (negative) points according to the following:
1 Unique is awarded -15
2 Uniques are awarded -10 each
3 Uniques are awarded -6 each
4 Uniques are awarded -3 each
5 or more Uniques are awarded -1 each
A Googled answer is not eligible for the bonus, but still counts when tallying the number of unique answers
<li>NEW: An incorrect Sheep answer on a fact-based Sheep question can not be the highest scoring answer. If the most common sheep answer is not correct, it will be scored as one point less than the most common correct answer (before the multiplier, so 2-points less on a double-point question, 3 points less on a triple-point question, and so on). For example, if the question is "Name a shape," and players answer as follows, the scores would be as indicated in parentheses:
8 people answer: Apple (4)
5 people answer: Square (5)
3 people answer: Triangle (3)
3 people answer: Dog (3)
2 people answer: Circle (2)
1 person answers: Black (0)
Square, Triangle, and Circle are scored normally. Apple is scored as one point less than the highest scoring correct answer. Dog is scored normally, since a normal score for that answer is less than the highest scoring correct answer. Black is also scored normally, giving Venusian zero points. Obviously, there are no wrong answers on the opinion-based Sheep questions.
<li> To assist you in submitting your answers, a spreadsheep is available here (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AgWuI6LBf_bldEV3MEt5RG9tbXZobkdzb1ZSbEtEcmc&hl=en).</ul>

Damn it, having trouble with these :(

Sorry. I know I'm a huge comic book nerd, but I tried to come up with questions that people could answer even if they weren't. I also reduced the google penalty on this one so it increases by one point per Google instead of doubling.

Also, thanks to Bus, who sent me a bunch of questions. I used some of his, and some of his were ones I independently came up with. The fact that he and I think enough alike that we're coming up with overlpaing questions scares me.

Why do 16 and 19 have asterisks?

Because the forum software was randomly sticking asterisks in my post for some reason. I thought I edited them all out, but I missed those two. They're gone now.

A couple questions I had (and just ignore this if part of the game is to not ask questions, and just see what answers are given):

For #6, are we talking anyone who was at one point a member of the GL Corps?

For #22, would something that's currently being made but not yet finished/released count?

The googles are nice ... I wouldn't think about playing otherwise, since I'd just look stupid on a few of the questions.

Put it this way: I won't count a former member of the GL Corps as wrong, and I won't count an in-production movie as wrong. Keep in mind, however, that both of these are Sheep questions, so you want the most common answer.

I already submitted my answers, but I have a question about #2. Does "character [that] have had their own comic" refer to a comics specifically titled to that character or do anthology titles count? For instance, Superhero X was a regular feature in Adventure Comics (say, at least 12 issues), but showed up nowhere else as a solo feature. Then, the legacy Superhero X is introduced and has his own self-titled comic.

If anthology titles don't count, I may have to change my answer.

JasonF

I would say having a feature in an anthology comic does not count as having your own title. What say ye, mob?

Is there a rush to get in? I'm going to send my answers in, but I want to research a couple of questions - so it might not be until later on today if I do that.

I also had a question about "legacy" characters. Is having a different name required ... or is just two clearly distinct characters (but still using the same name) good enough.

I'll go along with your judgment (you are the Sheepmaster), but I'd like a little more clarification. Is it necessary for both the original and legacy to have their own self-titled comic? Or is one or the other sufficient?

Regarding the legacy characters -- what I had in mind is that there is a hero named Captain Whatever, and he has his own comic -- called Captain Whatever, or Captain Whatever Adventures, or The Stupendous Captain Whatever, or so on -- and then he dies or retires or otherwise goes away. And then the same comic book company creates a new character, acknowledges that the new Captain Whatever is an all new character, and gives the new Captain Whatever his/her own book.

Things I would not count:
<ul><li>If there is a Captain Whatever who has his own book and a Kid Whatever who has his own book. Regardless of whether Kid Whatever is Captain Whatever when he was a kid, or a totally different character.
<li>If there is a Whatever Man who has his own book and a Whatever Woman who has her own book. Those are two separate characters.
<li>If one of the Captain Whatevers never had his own book -- he was a feature in an anthology, or a backup, or a supporting character, or only appeared as a member of a team.</ul>

As with all things Sheep, this is subject to debate by the players, and I am open to being persuaded. But again, what I had in mind was two distinct characters from the same company with the exact same superhero name, each of which had his own book.

JasonF
08-03-09, 04:14 PM
Just for Tracer: The BPRD is the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. It was created by Mike Mignola and appears in many of the comics he has done for the past 15 years, as well as in a certain series of movies adapted from some of those comics starring Ron Perlman and directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Well, this is a Reverse Sheep question ... where you get penalized for being "wrong", right? But your answer helps  The one that I had in mind should qualify.

I'll be sending in my answers. I used googles liberally. Even though I could come up with an answer for everything, the cost of a bad answer seemed to outweigh the penalty.

DISCUSSION OF DR. FATE REMOVED

Without getting into specifics (some people are still submitting answers, you know!), don't be confident that you've identified all of the series that starred Dr. Fate and all of the versions of the character. But were their versions you missed that match up with "Dr. Fate" titled serieses that you missed? That is the question for those considering their answers.

Which character who has never been adapted to a live action TV show or movie should be?

if one is planned but not out yet, does that count? What about guest appearances where the character is not the main character of the movie/tv show?

I'm not going to mark it wrong unless it's someone who has been the title character in a movie or live-action TV series. But it is a sheep question, so if you think the fact that Captain Whatever appeared in one episode of Smallville will make people shy away from giving him as an answer, it's your call.

OK. I didn't get as much prep work done ahead of time as I would have liked, and I've got a lot of moving pieces on my calendar, so here's what we're going to do. We're going to start this. Early on, it should be like normal in terms of pacing. As we get into it, there may be longer gaps between results. But I will get this thing out at as close to a normal pace as I can manage. So let me go post something in the One and Only Sheep Thread to let people know we're getting started, and then away we will go!

Let's start with a little refresher on the rules:

Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers or the question itself. Those who do not do this will be penalized 10 points right off the bat.

I have a question for the judges. If a contestant numbered his answers and skipped every other line, has he followed the rules? If not, what should we do?

Our judge has recommended extreme sanctions. It's an interesting thought, but we're going to show leniency and only assess the standard 10-point penalty.

Last time, we asked everyone to name a Batman villain. To a man, we all named the Joker. So this time, we decided to mix things up a bit.

Superman
This is a tricky one. There was never a point -- as with a traditional legacy character -- where they said "We're done telling stories about the old Superman. Here's a new guy in the Superman costume." Superman has always been Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper. And while they retroactively declared that some of his adventures happened to the Earth-2 version of him, he's not a legacy character in the traditional sense. I'm inclined not to count him.

No, what you describe is definitely the definition of a legacy character. The question is, has there been more than one person who has used the Superman name and who has had his own title? Do the Earth-1, Earth-2, and Post-Crisis Clark Kent count as three people or one?

I was going to argue that my brief run in first place was ruined by my failure to go back, re-think, and change most of my answers; as was my plan after my rush job entry. But in reality, I likely would have changed some of these early answers, and never reached the top tiers. So my laziness gives me the opportunity to add 'briefly led a comic book sheep game' to my stellar resume.

Speaking of breaking within an hour, is the game going to resume today?

Sorry -- I got hung up on work stuff all afternoon. I did take advantage of the spare minute hear or there to get ahead of the curve in prep work -- collating and sorting the answers. I'll post some more results when I get home tonight, which should be around 9:00 Eastern.

I just got caught up (am I the only one without internet at work?) & I am stunned -STUNNED- that I was the only one who picked G'nort! Though I do have to admit that Abin Sur & Kilowog are both better answers. In fact, that seems to be the theme of the game so far: my answers are pretty good, but everyone else's are better. This feeling will change by at least the mid-to-late teen questions. I think the toughest was 22. Is there an obvious answer I'm forgetting?

MBoyd

I thought about GNort, Abin Sur, and Sinestro briefly but ultimately settled on Kilowog.

I wasn't sure about that one either. I was stuck on whether to answer Green Lantern or not - obviously a major character, though I wasn't sure whether the sheep would count the Ryan Reynolds movie (since it's not finished yet).

Anyway, I didn't answer GL - which probably guarantees its the sheep answer. I went another direction ... with an extremely popular non-superhero "mature audiences" comic character.

I didn't even think of Sinestro, but I thought he would've been a better choice than Abin Sur for the casual fan. My first thoughts on the question were Ch'p, Mogo, Arisia, Katma Tui, Tomar Re and Kilowog, and Kilowog was by far the most well known.

Well, we got at least -2 points. Unless you said some other Vertigo character, in which case I hate you.

I'll be gone for a dinner engagement for most of tonight's results and I was lamenting that I was going to miss the argument over question 15: S: Which superhero has the worst Rogue's Gallery? Then it just now occurred to me that "worst" may mean most nefarious, most evil. I took it as being the most lame villains.

Well, it's not like my standing can get that much worse.

I don't think very many, if any at all, felt "worse" meant most evil :)

We had some unique answers this time around ... which would be great if this were a reverse sheep question, but not so good for a sheep question. Let's start with two that may generate some controversy.

Batdance - Prince -- brainee
Batman Theme -- Nick Danger

I assume we all agree that the Batman Theme refers to the Adam West Show and not the Keaton/Nicholson movie. Even if I'm wrong, Batdance wasn't the theme to that movie, so I say they still don't match. Brainee, Nick Danger, or anyone else -- feel free to try to persuade me otherwise.

JasonF
08-10-09, 08:21 PM
Here's another pair that go together but don't match:
"Superman's Song" by Crash Test Dummies -- hitman tommy
MMM…MMM…MMM by Crash Test Dummies -- ivelostr2

Once, there was a boy who
Remembered that the Crash Test Dummies
Had a song about Superman
But he couldn't quite remember the right one
And so he cost himself and hitman tommy two points each

Rex Power Colt-Robot Man

Other uniques:
Ninja Rap -- fumanstan

I have no idea what song this is, but nobody else said anything close to this, so ... no points.

Waiting for Superman-Flaming Lips -- Meatwad's Ghost

My knowledge of the Flaming Lips begins and ends with "She Don't Use Jelly."

Superman (the one that goes "I'm your superman") -- orangecrush

This may be the last one we do tonight because I think we may need to have some discussion on this, and I want the daytime crowd to have a chance to weigh in. Here's the deal: we had two people say "Nite Owl" without specifying which one and one person say "Silk Spectre" without specifying which one. I PM'ed all three and asked them to clarify. One person did; the other two did not. My inclination is to mark the two people who did not clarify as wrong answers. Does that seem fair to everyone?

JasonF

This may be the last one we do tonight

Wait .. that's just stupid. We can keep going with the scores for this one as tentative. If there's overwhelming support to change the way I treat Nite Owl and Silk Spectre, we'll revise the scores.
