by the way this appears (from the cover pictured) to be the standard version and not the Director's Cut

also don't forget this price reduction falls within the window to get the difference back if you previously purchased from BB

I have a feeling that the single-disc theatrical cut of "Watchmen" will be available for even less in the near future.

My Wal-Mart completely sold out of the 2-disc director's cut in about two days, but they still have about 200 copies of the TC still on the shelves. Haven't been to any other stores like Target or Best Buy yet, though, but if Warners has flooded the market with a ton of the single-discers that nobody wants, they're probably going to showing up at Big Lots and as Black Friday loss-leaders.

I never saw the theatrical cut, but I picked up the Director's Cut and it was well worth the $. You also get a $10 coupon toward the Ultimate Edition due later this year.

I agree. Although I did see the theatrical cut (in an actual theatre), the DC makes much more sense, and I think it is a better film in this version.

This DVD will probably be in the bargain bin by Christmas.

Could it be because they don't have a blu-ray player?

I just bought the 9.99 1 disc version at BB last night. It also has the $10 coupon for the ultimate edition. Thats perfect for me since I hope to be blu-ray ready by then.

Or it could also be that they want the theatrical cut which was not released on BD.....

^ I have a blu-ray player, but I bought the DVD.

One of my reasons is this: For ~$10, I could own the BD and watch it in exactly one place on earth (available to me), my living room. But for $5 I can watch it anywhere on the planet.

Other factors apply as well, so just because someone owns both formats it doesn't mean that BD is always the choice.

If you have blu-ray, why the hell would you buy the dvd? It comes with the theatrical cut on the digital copy if thats what you want. As far as being able to watch it anywhere, more and more people have blu ray players now. This is a movie that DEMANDS to be seen in hi-def. The video and audio are amazing on this. I personally don't care about being able to "watch it anywhere on the planet" (even though I pretty much can with the digital copy). I am perfectly happy watching it at home, with my home entertainment system in my living room.

Have you ever considered getting a second player for a different room? Walmart has a Magnavox player for $98. That's probably a decent bedroom player.

Not everyone wants to watch a 3 hour movie on an iPod or be stuck on their computer.

As I said, there are a lot of factors involved.

As for a second player, that wouldn't help much. I thought I was more of a homebody than anybody on this forum, but I watch a high percentage of my discs out of the house (car, work, sister's house, Mom's house, friend's house, etc). Can't justify buying 3-4 more blu-ray players.

I can either buy 1 BD playable in one room, or 2 SDs usable everywhere (using my average cost per disc).

In this particular case, part of my decision is based on knowing that I'll buy the Ultimate Edition BD someday.

But still, I guess the basic factor for me in all my BD vs SD decisions is cost, and that I'd rather own twice as much in SD. Part of my justification is being not as gung-ho on PQ and AQ as many of you. For me, the story is 99% of the viewing experience.

I think I'll wait until it's cheaper. I already bought the BD, but I'd really like to have the theatrical cut on disc too.

It would have been nice if Warner had just done a theatrical cut DVD / Digital Copy disc. But I think I'll get the 1-disc eventually and just swap the discs out instead.

On a side note, does anyone know if there is a scan floating around of the insert that touts the "bells and whistles" edition? I'm curious to see if it includes cover art or something else interesting.

Nice, this became a Blu discussion.

I could photo it and upload it but it is pointless... No, nothing interesting.

For the record, I picked up the DC (from CH) on plain ass standard old boring and ugly DVD... I only clicked on this thread to see why there were (relatively) so many replies. Nope, not Blu yet... and yes, I can afford it and have the gear + watched it in IMAX.

I'm still good for now.

Unless the directors cut makes the movie around 1 1/2 hours, I'll pass.
