Hey guys

Anyone going to see this in the theaters? They're releasing 1.0 in the theaters in a limited fashion.

http://www.funimationfilms.com/events.html

For me the nearest is probably London, Ontario. Anything else is like half a day away. There's some talk on the evafreaks forums that a theater in Chicago might show it if they get enough interest (that would be nice, it would avoid trying to track down a passport for Canada, stupid new laws).

I've seen Evangelion the series, but not any of the movies. This is showing at my local theater in August, so I'm wondering what exactly it is. Is this a movie, the first episode or what?

If you want to know the specifics go here (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1614497&postcount=10). The overview is rather thorough and you should get a good idea of the new Eva movies.

Exclusives for anime releases are far and few in between nowadays...and FWIW the 1.01 release does have a slipcover.

January solicitations has been out for a while now and it's not listed. It may not happen until later this year...

So are they going to re-tell the entire series or is this a totally new story and direction?

It's pretty a much alternate retelling. FUNimation has the first movie. It remains to be seen if they will pick up the rest (of which I think it will be theirs to lose).
Source (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1614480&postcount=8)
These movies are an alternate retelling of the series. The first movie (1.0) follows very closely to the series, while the second movie starting to move away from the series and into new territory. At least that's what I've heard.
Source (http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1614497&postcount=10)
The first movie, 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, and its various incarnations (the 1.01 extended cut, the 1.11 digital master cut, and the recent TV broadcast cut) covers the first 6 episodes of the TV series exactly. Some animation is taken from the TV series and touched up (moreso than for the Renewal/Platinum release of the TV series), other parts are modified, and still other parts are completely new (sometimes redone animation for existing events, sometimes completely new events). For example, the battle with the former third/current fourth angel is essentially the same as it appears in episode 2 of the TV series, while the battle with the former fifth/current sixth angel is essentially the same in terms of the things that happen, but is so much more completely awesome than its TV series counterpart. FUNimation is releasing the 1.01 cut later this year, and is releasing the 1.11 cut next year.

The second movie, 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, covers up through the end of episode 19. Certain events from the TV series are revisited (and revised) amidst more new content. More new animation is added. A new character is added. Crazy things happen. The movie is as of yet unlicensed.

It's pretty a much alternate retelling.

Meh, I was hoping this was going to be completely new retelling and animation ala "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood". But it seems like the majority of it is just a retread of the original animation.

Not quite...see below (from Wiki).
The film was given a retransfer to fix some darkness issues in the previous DVD release and roughly 3 minutes of new animation was added to the first 15 minutes of the original film.

I just watched You are not Alone. Loved it and the changes they made were great for the flying fortress angel. There were also other changes that were interesting and one that is kind of a major change. Don't think I'll pick it up until 1.11 is released. It'll be interesting seeing how the next movie changes thing.

I agree with you Baron. It has been a while since I saw Evangelion but I did like the new movie. It will really all hinge on what the new changes do to the story in the next movie.

Keep in mind that this is first of four films. Only the first one has been licensed so far. It will be just matter of time before the next one gets licensed.

I've only watched the dub, and I thought Rei's dream near the beginning, which had a voice-over repeating two names over and over, was a very low point.

Watched this today. I liked a lot of the changes, especially to the diamond angel. The framing seemed tight in some parts, though, but I guess that was inevitable going from 4:3 to 16x9.

It's the same framing they used when they reanimated the scenes for Death & Rebirth. It looked overly tight then too.

Yeah it comes after 1.0 (1.01, 1.11). And it may be for those who don't want to wait. Even if FUNimation does license it this year, it's highly unlikely that it will be released this year (and it could be longer if there is theatrical obligations).

Announcement made during new preview of film after 2nd film's TV premiere

The anime studio Khara (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=6686) confirmed (https://twitter.com/#%21/khara_inc/status/107087975879417856) that Evangelion Shin Gekijō-ban Q Quickening, the third film in Hideaki Anno (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=15) and Khara's four-part remake of Gainax (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/company.php?id=54)'s Neon Genesis Evangelion (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=49) anime series, will open in Japan in Fall of 2012. The announcement was made during a new preview of the film that aired after the television premiere (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2011-07-25/eva-2.0-returns-to-theaters-on-same-night-it-airs-on-tv) of the second film.

The title of the third film was first revealed (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-06-27/3rd-eva-remake-film-to-be-titled-q-quickening) with a teaser that ran at the end of the second film's theatrical release. The "Q" or "Kyū" in the third film's title is a wordplay in Japanese; the first three films' subtitles are the names for the three classical movements (Jo-Ha-Kyū or Introduction-Exposition-Climax) of traditional Japanese music such as gagaku and Noh.

The Yaraon! blog posted (http://yaraon.blog109.fc2.com/blog-entry-3627.html) images from the new preview of the third film.

That's going to be a long wait for the DVD release.

Part 1 was increadible and Part 2 was amazing.

I really enjoyed the original series, but the pacing and condensed format of these movies along with new animation are spectacular.

I've seen the first two movies and I have to differ. I was a fan of the series back in the day, and while I enjoyed the first movie, I thought the second film was terrible. So bad I have no interest in this series anymore.

Like many, I enjoyed the original series to a point, but was disappointed by the non-nonsensical direction the story took and the failure to write the characters a satisfying conclusion. I also hated the 'End of Evangelion' movie.

I was hoping, like in the first film, they would clean up a lot of the problems with the characters and story and try and make some sense out of it. But, it all falls apart in the second movie. As random and non-nonsensical as anything in the series, and probably worse. The conclusion was comical in a very bad way.

Rather than distance themselves from a lot of the pretentious and downright silly Christian symbolism and mythological components to the story, they have decided to double down on this part of the series. Completely unexplained terminology is constantly thrown around in dramatic fashion and the viewer is just clueless as to what is going on, so it falls flat. It just becomes too absurd to enjoy. I could look past and laugh at the camp in the series, but it is over the top in this movie. Inexplicable is really the best word for it.

The writing for the characters hasn't improved much either, which is kind of what I wanted from these remakes. Not much in the way of added development here, although they clearly attempted such. It mostly feels superficial and uninteresting.

At least some of the animation was cool, but far from amazing. I didn't mind much though, because I respected they tried to maintain a consistent visual style to the series. Same with the music. It feels kind of low-budget 90s, but that was part of the appeal to the series. In fact, this is the best aspect of the movies, and now I almost wish the movies had continued as a simple retelling like the first film.

And, can anyone who has seen the 2nd movie and series remind me where we're at in the story?

If I recall, this second movie covered pretty much all the major plot points from the series episodes 7-20, pretty much right up to the conclusion?

I guess it's hard to say since the story is so different this time around.

There is one more after this, but it is finished so should come out much sooner.

There have been no reports saying that it's finished. That was the original plan like 5 years ago, but it's clearly changed.

Are you sure? I thought the only reason this took so long to come out was to finish the last movie? If that isn't the case why did this take so long to come out?

It's due out in 2013, but who knows if that date will stick.

There are a few reviews of the Japanese release:

http://kotaku.com/5961452/evangelion-30-is-not-the-film-you-were-expecting
http://www.japanator.com/review-evangelion-3-0-you-can-not-redo-27282.phtml

http://www.evageeks.org/2012/11/spoiler-free-review-of-evangelion-3-0/

I haven't read much of a few of the reviews to avoid spoilers (the authors warn of them ahead of time), but while the film could be considered "controversial," it's not uniformly thought terrible, as there are some that quite liked it. It's apparently quite a departure from the original storyline of the TV show though.

That's interesting. I know Australia (Madman Ent. specifically) can't confirm anything on it yet. I guess it's a wait and see.

And I will continue to hope I can watch the series for the first time before the inevitable Bluray boxset of the rebuilds come out so I know whether or not to invest. I've had the Platinum box sitting on my shelf waiting for the right opportunity to watch for some time now.

This is not correct. There is no release date set for anywhere outside of Japan. the date in IMDB is incorrect, it even listed Australia as 1st of January.

When we are able to release information we will of course release it, until then unless you see a news release from a legitimate source such as a company's website, it's probably not correct.

That's not too bad of a price. The question may be whether you can sit through all that consecutively.
