Never played before? Here's some praise for the game:
"These things are the most fun way to waste time at work since GemCraft." - maxfisher
"This is the most stirring display of gallantry and sportsmanship since Mountbatten gave India back to the Punjabs." - wishbone
"These have been really fun." - Tracer Bullet
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Bus for quite possibly the funniest commentary of any of the sheep games." - orangecrush18
<ul>Rules<br>
<li> The object of the game is to out-think everyone by picking answers to questions that are the most common (<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">Sheep</font>) or least common (<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">Reverse Sheep</font>), but still correct.
<li> Example <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">Sheep</font> question: "Name a unit of currency." A good answer would be the U.S. dollar and a bad answer might be the Uruguayan peso.
<li> Example <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">Reverse Sheep</font> question: "Name a current member of the cabinet". Hillary Clinton might be a bad answer, but Shaun Donovan might be a good answer. (Unless you think everyone else is trying to go as obscure as possible, in which case you might outsmart them by naming Hillary Clinton).
<li> Sheep scores are tallied as negative numbers. Reverse Sheep scores are tallied as positive numbers. The lowest score wins.
<li> The answers to each question are tallied up. Wrong answers in Reverse Sheep are scored two points above the most common answer. This penalty is multiplied by the Lightning Round Multiplier. Wrong answers in Sheep are not penalized.
<li> Certain rounds are considered Lightning Rounds (designated by a multiplier, such as ×2). In these rounds, scores are adjusted by the <u>number on the multiplier</u>. A wrong answer still gets a +4 penalty in a ×2 round and a +6 penalty in a ×3 round, and so on. In a sheep round, a wrong answer scores normally.
<li> The assumption is that you will not use Google, Wikipedia, etc. You may choose to do so. However, if you so choose, you must indicate each answer for which you have used an outside resource by placing an asterisk (*) before the answer. You will be penalized one point for your first asterisked answer, two points for your second asterisked answer, four points for your third asterisked answer, and so on.
<li> Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers or the question itself. Those who do not do this will be penalized 10 points right off the bat.
<li> Note: Be creative with your answers, but don't be stupid.
<li> Sheep questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">S:</font>, Reverse Sheep questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">R:</font>.
<li> Unique Bonus: Reverse Sheep questions will generate additional bonus (negative) points if we have at least 25 entrants and there are less than 6 people with unique answers according to the following:
1 Unique is awarded -15
2 Uniques are awarded -10 each
3 Uniques are awarded -6 each

Here's a not-so-hypothetical hypothetical question.
Let's say one of the Sheep questions was "Name a President depicted on Mt. Rushmore." There are four correct answers -- George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt.
Now, let's say somebody sent in "Abraham Jefferson" as their answer.
My first inclination was to count that as wrong (since it's a sheep question, that just means it wouldn't match anything). A little disappointing to those people who answered with Lincoln or Jefferson and would have had one more match, but it is what it is.
However, there have been three people who sent in ambiguous answers. In each case, I have PM'ed the person and said "You need to be more specific in your answer to _____________."
So is it unfair of me to just mark the Abraham Jefferson answer as wrong when I've given people who said ambiguous things a chance to clarify? After all, "Abraham Jefferson" is not wrong in the way that, say "Jimmy Carter" would be. Carter is not on Mount Rushmore. It's a wrong answer. On the other hand, the person who said Abraham Jefferson probably meant either Lincoln or Jefferson, either one of which would be a right answer.
I think the answer is that there's a difference between ambiguous and wrong, so it's not unfair of me to treat the two differently. But I guess you can all take this as an opportunity to double-check the answers you sent me to make sure you don't have your own "Abrahm Jefferson" situation.
Venusian

JasonF, as someone who's run four of these things, I can tell you that it's
tell you that it's much easier when you give people the benefit of the doubt.
The problem is that this is an answer where the benefit of the doubt could mean that they meant one of two different things, either one of which would be a correct answer, and either one of which would give them (and the other people who answered one of those two things) a different score. It's not quite as simple as screwing up a first name.
It's more like if the question were "Name one of the two major treaty organizations of the Cold War" and they said "North Atlantic Pact." Do they mean NATO or do they mean the Warsaw Pact?
Like I said, I'm inclined to mark it as wrong unless they send me a correction. If they don't, we can all laugh and point when the results are announced.
JasonF
07-17-09, 05:34 PM
Also, it occurs to me that when I ran Comic Book Sheep, the Bus submitted as one of his answers something like "That recent World War involving all the Marvel superheroes." Marvel had recently done an event called World War Hulk and another called Civil War. I assumed the Bus meant World War Hulk and gave him the benefit of the doubt rather than simply marking it wrong, but it turned out he had meant Civil War.

I think using the google option for a RS question should forfeit unique bonus points.
I also think the scoring system for these games is completely backwards, but it's a bit late now.
I have arbitrarily decided that Google penalties do not get multiplied on Lightning Rounds, but Googled answers are not eligible for the unique bonus. They still count as being unique answers for purposes of determining how many unique answers there were; it is just that the Googler does not get points.
So it has been written, so it shall be done.

I decided to e-mail the relevant player and tell him that the Abrahm Jefferson hypothetical was in reference to one of his answers. I did not tell him which answer. We will see if he figures it out and changes his answer; if not, it will only match another "Abraham Jefferson," should anyone else submit that answer.
All you people who answered with Abraham Lincoln or Thomas Jefferson, get ready to grumble that he really meant to match your answer and so you should get the extra point.

I'm late to the game on this one, but IMO even if "Jefferson" would be a right answer and a match for someone who said "Thomas Jefferson", "Abraham Jefferson" is a wrong answer and not a match. I believe that this is how Jeopardy does it, FWIW. If the correct answer (excuse me, correct question) is "Who is Thomas Jefferson", they give credit for "Who is Jefferson" but would give a wrong answer to "Who is Abraham Jefferson". If "Jefferson" is ambiguous in the context of the question (let's say there were two presidents named Jefferson), they would ask for the contestant to be more specific.

I don't hang out in this forum much, so I wasn't sure on this (and a few other questions) whether I should count on lots of knowledge or not (for ex., the least known president question). For the president question, I counted on lots of knowledge, but that may have been a mistake!

I don't think it's a bad idea for questions like the judge one, but I'm not sure how it would be implemented on a question like "What's the most pressing issue Congress will face this term?" If somebody answers "Proving that President Obama is really a secret Kenyan," can I penalize it as a wrong answer?
I think the next time I do one of these, I might subdivide the Sheep questions into penalty-eligible and penalty-ineligible.

"Keith, the returns from the first question are in and it looks like Flashback and Red Dog have taken an early and commanding lead."
Oh how short lived that will be for me.

I considered 4:
Wood - recent news
Brown - because she's awesome and I don't let people forget it
Posner - he's the most published/well-known to law (and economic) geeks
Judy - carbon blobs

Don't know who Wood or Posner are. Other two would be better. What about Wapner?

Here are some unique answers:
Batchelder
wendersfan may know her, but nobody else does
Judge Joe Brown
Thor Simpson
Hamilton
orangecrush18
Hawkins
funkpie
Illston
gmanca
Jacobs
Mordred
Lefkow
Scrumtrulescent
gmanca, Mordred, and Scrumtrulescent had to google for those. How'd that work out, guys?

I went with the "carbon blob" choice in this question. Will this be the "Monopoly" question of Politics Sheep?

Isn't Wapner dead - not that it matters.
Diane Wood was on Obama's short list for Souter's vacancy.

I think I remember wenders mentioning that he knew Batchelder during the O'Connor vacancy. She got some consideration for that vacancy. I would have preferred her to Alito.

Judge Wapner is still alive and will be turning 90 (!) this year.

Here are some more uniques:
Michel
Lunatikk
Owens
chowderhead
Kagan
Nick Danger
Not only is Kagan unique, it is wrong -- her nomination was killed in committee by the Republicans, who never gave her a hearing when presidnet Clinton nominated her to the bench. She's currently serving as Solicitor General and is always on the short list for any appellate appointment ... but she's not a judge.
Reinhold
Merkin Muffley gets credit for the most clever answer. Unfortunately, there are no bonus points for that.
Sotomayor
Flashback
No. Just ... no. Read the question, man!
Wood

That's all the uniques. If your name wasn't listed above, you think like at least one other player!

Kent
Tommy Ceez
Not only is it unique, not only did Tommy Ceez get his second Google penalty for this one, but Mr. Kent resigned in disgrace last month under threat of impeachment and is therefore no longer a correct answer to this question.

Fuck! Renny was going to be my alternate choice. But as William Howard Taft is the Finest American Ever Built™ I contractually had to use him as my answer.
