DVD Talk review of 'Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre: Complete Season One'
I read Paul Mavis's DVD review of Dick Powell's Zane Grey Theatre: Complete Season One at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=37977 and...Dick Powell was a fine actor. This series was outstanding. Johnny O'Clock, for Powell fans, is a definitive film not yet on DVD for whatever reasons.

This was a BLIND buy for me.
I thought the first season was very good.
My favorite episode was the James Whitmore-Ida Lupino story.
Also got some good acting by: Jack Lemmon, Robert Ryan, Rory Calhoun(at first I was thinking this was the pilot for his "TEXAN" tv series. Both characters Rory played had a Confedrate Civil War Background.)
Hopefully this set sells well enough for a Season 2 release which will have the pilot for "The RifleMan" with Chuck Connors on it.

Isnt' that Whitmore/Lupino episode excellent? It just comes out of nowhere on this set -- amazing. And Lemmon and Ryan are particularly good here, as well.

I am going to try and find a P{AL version of this, I am making a Documentary, Searching for Zane Grey's America and it will be interesting to see if any of these stories actually come from his books. Zane Grey lived an extravagant life, he was the highest paid writer on the planet in his time so lending his name to a TV series was simply more cash to support his fishing 'addiction'. There has never been, imnsho a Zane Grey based film that has accurately explored his themes which were very deep within the human spirit. Riders of the Purple Sage came close but missed the deep relationships between mormons and 'Outsiders'. More movies were made from his books than any other writer, period. Zane Grey's West Society is worth researching.
