Maura Tierney to have surgery for tumor. "Parenthood" delayed.
I like her as an actress in just about everything she does. I hope for a speedy recovery!

Actress Maura Tierney says she's having surgery to remove a tumor in her breast.
Tierney, who recently wrapped a long-running stint on the NBC medical drama "ER," issued a statement about the surgery on Monday, giving no details on her condition and when she'd due to have the operation.
Says Tierney: "I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed."
Tierney's setback has delayed production on her new NBC series, "Parenthood," for eight weeks. The network said the medical drama "Mercy" will instead premiere this fall.

I hope it goes well for her. I found ER to be unbearable (for reasons other than her) fairly early in her run, but I imagine everyone knows how I feel about Newsradio. I haven't ever heard a bad thing said about her as a person. Nobody deserves bad health, but it is jarring to see somebody pleasant, talented, and young going through a scare like this.

I was really looking forward to Parenthood in the Fall. It does sound like this show is cursed with the NBC Executive dying on the set of the Pilot early this year and now this. It's good to know the network values her contribution to this show enough to halt production and wait for her. Hope for a speedy recovery for Maura.

It very well may. I am not disputing the numbers or anything like that, just noting that happens in the circles I travel infrequently enough that it shocks me. You cited just about the only comparable celebrity story I can think of.

Illness forcing Maura Tierney from 'Parenthood'

By FRAZIER MOORE
NEW YORK (AP) - Maura Tierney says she is dropping out of the new NBC series "Parenthood" to continue her treatment for breast cancer.
In a statement Thursday, she expressed disappointment at not being part of the show, but said she and her doctors remain confident about the outcome of her treatment.
Tierney had filmed the pilot episode for the series, which was scheduled to premiere this month. But she was sidelined in July, after a tumor was found in her breast, requiring surgery. Production never resumed.
Another new series, the medical drama "Mercy," will premiere this fall instead.
"Parenthood," based on the 1989 movie that starred Steve Martin, is now set to debut midseason.
Tierney's role - that of a financially strapped single mother who returns home to her parents - is expected to be recast.
NBC expressed sadness at Tierney leaving the series, but added, "our main concern is for her quick and full recovery."
Tierney, 44, was a longrunning cast member of the NBC drama "ER" and recently has been seen on the FX drama "Rescue Me."

That sucks, but her health comes 1st. I wonder if they will re-shoot the Pilot or only re-shoot her scenes.

I feel like this series is cursed from the beginning. I wonder if they'll reshot the pilot or just bring in a new actress from episode 2 onwards. They've already sent so much money getting that pilot in working order.

I was really looking forward to seeing Maura and Peter Krause work together on a Tommy Schlamme show. I just hope this isn't an indication that Maura's Cancer is more serious than initially thought.

I really hope that this is NBC blaming her illness for either recasting they decided they wanted to do or a "delay" that is going to turn into a cancellation, not the illness actually taking an ugly turn. I'd far rather think NBC has scumbag execs who would use somebody's illness as cover than for Maura's health to be in that much jeopardy that she couldn't continue.
I think it's Krause who is the McGinley factor at play here, though. Dirty Sexy Money had a decent amount of traction in its first season, but the strike killed it. Now another series he is cast in that gets an order has a delay like this.

How exactly does Krause = McGinley? There are legitimate reasons why DSM failed and Parenthood is undetermined. McGinley either came into shows later in their lifespan or they were crap from the beginning. Krause had Sports Night (not crap), SFU (definitely not crap), Dirty Sexy Money (victim of strike/decent show) and now Parenthood (hasn't even premiered episode one yet). Again, McGinley-esque? I don't think so.

I wish her well, but I'd be okay if this lead to cancellation before it even gets off the ground if that helps Chuck.
