subwoofer repair

Hello. My JBL DS-10 subwoofer emits distortion (or feedback) when it is plugged in and not connected to my system. It is loud enough to wake the neighbors. I am planning to take it in for repair, but before that happens, I would like to know what causes it so it won't happen again. For example, is it a blown fuse, bad wiring or speaker? Any info. will help. Thanks!

This is normal.

Just leave it connected to your system while
plugged in.

It's hardly normal for a sub to be so loud when not in use as to wake up neighbors! It definetly sounds like you need to have the sub serviced and after you get it back you may want to ask the service tech if he has an idea as to what caused the sub to go bad.

Incorrect.

My subs clearly state in the manual to
NOT plug them in unless they are
connected to the system.

When I first hooked them up, I had intended
to do this, but had forgotten, and plugged
one in solo. Sure enough, it started to
crank out a continuous 120dB signal.

So bottom line, just leave it connected to
your system while plugged in.

That's kinda cool if you just feel like pissing the neighbors off. Is it bad for your sub?

Okay, let me clarify a bit. The noise suddenly started when the sub was plugged in to the power and connected to my system. I disconnected it from my system and plugged it into another outlet. Then it made the noise again. I was talking to a friend and he said it might be a resistor problem. Who knows? There is a slight burn smell inside the cabinet also.

If something smells burnt definately take it in for a fix. Something is probably fried in the amp.

Yes, it's very bad for the sub. The drivers
move about 1.5" continuously. It will

Yep, a good rule of thumb for audio gear is
