View Full Version : Jodie Foster to star in and direct "The Beaver"

Let the jokes begin. But this is true. From Variety:

Mel Gibson will star in "The Beaver" for director Jodie Foster.
The script, written by Kyle Killen, topped the Blacklist in December.

Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. On top of helming, Foster will play the role of the manís wife.

Foster boarded the project and brought it to Gibson, with whom she co-starred in 1994's "Maverick."

Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Keith Redmon will produce the film. Producers are pushing for a September start date in New York.

Financing for the $18 million-$19 million pic has yet to be finalized. A studio could pick up the project or it could go the indie route, as Golin did with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Babel."

It's possible that Gibson's production company Icon could get involved in some way. Icon has distribution shingles in territories such as the U.K. and Australia.

Project had several star and director combos circling -- including Steve Carell and Jay Roach -- over the past several months.

Pic brings Foster back to feature directing for the third time, after 1991's "Little Man Tate" and 1995's "Home for the Holidays."

What genre is this? A dark comedy? A standard comedy? Or maybe a weird drama?

I could see this premise going several ways in tone, from quirky like "Lars and the Real Girl" to mushy like "Patch Adams".

Whoever it was that decided Jodie Foster had any talent and started her career should be shot.

I've never seen a movie she was in that she didn't bring down a few notches by her mere presence and lack of talent.

So, I think there must be something to this, but we'll see eventually.

Seriously, I think if they release this movie in a few months things will have died down and people will wanna see the movie due to either hyped up media controversy or are just fans Of Gibsons work. I fall into the latter category. Look past the actor and focus on the great performance he always gives.

I read on chud that it's actually deviates from the puppet angle into a dark psychological piece and that because of what's going on with Mel right now, it's too similar. If anything, this situation and that tidbit make me want to watch it even more than the "meh" level of enthusiasm I had before.

This would be the best movie ever if it were a mockumentary. Mel plays himself, post controversy, always wearing this beaver puppet on his hand and acting like it's nothing out of the ordinary. Whenever he feels the urge to say something inappropriate he lets the beaver 'say' it, then chastises the beaver for being offensive.

Beaver: Well if it isn't another stupid Jew!

Mel: Beaver! That's not nice! (to Jerry Seinfeld) I'm so sorry, Jerry, my beaver has a mind of his own. He's always getting me in hot water.

Jerry: Beaver? You're doing that! You're the beaver!

Mel: I've signed him up for sensitivity training classes.

Jerry: You mean you've signed yourself up for sensitivity training classes?

Mel: (dumbfounded look) No, they're for the beaver. He's the one with the problem.

Jerry: You're the beaver!!!! You! It's a puppet on your hand, that you control!

Mel: Whoa, now hold on, you can't blame me for this!

Beaver: Typical Jew! Blaming a Christian for everything!

Jerry: I see your lips moving!!!

Impressions from the trailer: I see where Foster's wanting to go with the film by using the puppet as a barrier breaker, a tactic call "play therapy" used in psychiatry sessions, but there's something decidedly off about this execution. I'll toss a bit of positivity to Anton Yelchin, though. The snippets from the trailer are the most I've been impressed with him to-date.

But yeah, seems too farcical and fantasy-laden, at least at a glance.

For some reason over the years when i have read about this script/movie i always got the impression it was more in a theme of Bad Santa where the Beaver really is quite shocking with what it says. After seeing the trailer this looks like some Penny Marshall rubbish. I have not seen a trailer as dull as this one in some time now. This movie will die a painful death at theaters.

I just saw this. I didn't watch the trailer so i had little idea what this was about. From the synopsis it sounded like a dark comedy. It seemed to start that way but as the film continues along, it seemed less funny and more disturbing. The part where Mels Character cuts his hand off I could see coming a mile away.

Not his best performance nor was Jodies. But overall i'd say it's worth a rental just to see Mel "act" batshit crazy.
