Cable series... quick question, chime in:
I'm eight episodes away from finishing Six Feet Under on DVD... so far I've also seen through Deadwood and The Sopranos right til the end. Which do you guys think I should check out next?
Tossing up between Big Love, Mad Men, The Wire and Entourage. Oh, and I also saw the first season of Dexter, which was pretty good, how have the second and third seasons held up? always seemed to me to be sort've like Prison Break, never was sure how much further they could go after a fairly self-supporting season one arc.

If you have cable, then go for Mad Men since you can pick up the first 2 seasons and be ready for the S3 premiere in August. It's also my favorite show from that lot.
Otherwise, you can't go wrong with any of those. The Wire wasn't my cup of tea but a lot of people like it a lot. Never saw Dexter.

I would say skip Entourage. It may fare better on DVD, but it is very slow to watch from week to week during the broadcasting and nothing of substance ever seems to happen or change for the guys ever.
OZ is also very good - I am rewatching the entire series right now. Also for currently running shows, Weeds, Dexter, Mad Men and Damages are all good calls. OH YEAH - and Burn Notice is also great!

I agree with all of these and I would also add Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy.

I tried to get into Mad Men. I even got somewhere into the middle of the second season when I realized I just didn't look forward to watching the show. I was forcing myself because everyone kept saying how great it was. It just wasn't my cup of tea unfortunately.
Out of those four I would choose either the Wire or Big Love. I have immensely enjoyed both of those series, and would recommend them to anyone.
If you're open to new suggestions may I suggest Farscape? (Obligatory reference due to avatar.)

Another vote for THE WIRE primarily because you can watch the entire series on DVD.
I really like MAD MEN, but sometimes the wait between episodes is frustrating (yes, it's that good).
Even though only one season of TRUE BLOOD is available on DVD, I'd also recommend that series. Especially if you like SIX FEET UNDER as it's also written, produced and sometimes directed by Alan Ball.

The Shield is a great choice, if you're so inclined. And it's wrapped up so there won't be any long waits for the next season to hit.
I like Entourage but it's definitely not for everyone. I'm midway through the 5th season on dvd now and like another poster said, it can be a bit slow going.
I highly recommend Dexter. The second and third seasons both started off fairly slowly but truly kicked ass once they kicked it into gear. Damn good show.

Big Love.

Of that list definitely Big Love. Gets better with each season, IMO.
Or watch the first two seasons of Rescue Me and think of that as the entire show.

For comedy...Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Weeds
For drama...Breaking Bad, The Wire, Lost, Mad Men, OZ, Prison Break, Rescue Me, The Shield
You can't go wrong with any of these shows!
You mentioned Prison Break in your OP. As long as you shut off your brain, and AVOID SPOILERS of the other seasons, you will have a blast watching the show.

Pay Cable:
Dexter (renewed for 2 more seasons)
Californication
Basic Cable:
The Shield (obviously all on DVD)
Sons of Anarchy (season 2 coming in September)
Rescue Me
Mad Men
Damages (starts out extremely extremely slow, but so worth it)
Burn Notice (it's currently on season 3, but 2 seasons are on DVD)
I think comparing Prison Break and Dexter is like apples and oranges. I loved PB, but Dexter so far has had each season with a self contained story arc that is much more plausible and makes alot more sense than most of the stuff PB has done.
