Never played before? Here's some praise for the game:

"These things are the most fun way to waste time at work since GemCraft." - maxfisher

"This is the most stirring display of gallantry and sportsmanship since Mountbatten gave India back to the Punjabs." - wishbone

"These have been really fun." - Tracer Bullet

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank The Bus for quite possibly the funniest commentary of any of the sheep games." - orangecrush18

<ul>Rules<br>
<li> The object of the game is to out-think everyone by picking answers to questions that are the most common (<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">Sheep</font>) or least common (<FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">Reverse Sheep</font>), but still correct.
<li> Example <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">Sheep</font> question: "Name a famous book by Tolkien." A good answer would be The Hobbit and a bad answer might be The Silmarillion.
<li> Example <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">Reverse Sheep</font> question: "Name a character in Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings". Bilbo Baggins might be a bad answer, but Ghân-buri-Ghân might be a good answer. (Unless everyone is trying to go as obscure as possible).
<li> Sheep scores are tallied as negative numbers. Reverse Sheep scores are tallied as positive numbers. The lowest score wins.
<li> The answers to each question are tallied up. Wrong answers in Reverse Sheep are scored two points above the most common answer. This penalty is multiplied by the Lightning Round Multiplier. Wrong answers in Sheep are not penalized.
<li> Certain rounds are considered Lightning Rounds (designated by a multiplier, such as ×2). In these rounds, scores are adjusted by the <u>number on the multiplier</u>. A wrong answer still gets a +4 penalty in a ×2 round and a +6 penalty in a ×3 round, and so on. In a sheep round, a wrong answer scores normally.
<li> You may not cheat by using Google, Wikipedia, etc. Use only what's in your head. <b>NEW!</b> A few questions (<b>√</b>) contain links to resources which you may check to answer that question.
<li> Please send in your answers to me via PM. Place only one answer per line, without numbers or the question itself. Those who do not do this will be penalized 10 points right off the bat.
<li> For your convenience, <a href="http://www.fantasticdamage.com/blog/BookR1.xls">I've made an Excel file</a> where you can prepare your answers. When finished, just select the column of answers and send that in as text via PM. Don't email me the Excel file, that would be silly. (<a href="http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=tZYHNPvU3VS9r-_jpeVqkfw">Google version here</a>).
<li> Note: Unless specifically mentioned in the question, all books need to be published books. If authors are named, publicly-known pen names are OK (Richard Bachman).
<li> Sheep questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #F9DF00">S:</font>, Reverse Sheep questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #A3D867">R:</font>.
<li> <b>NEW!</b> Equalizer Question(s) A few questions are Equalizer Questions. These are designed to make the mid- and late-game more competitive. These questions are marked by an <FONT style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #FF46B5">E:</font> in front of them. In these questions, all answers are grouped together as per usual, but the top 50% (rounded up) all have their answers count as Reverse Sheep questions, and the bottom 50% (rounded down) have their answers count as Sheep questions.

Let's say there's six players, with their scores as such:
Googlemj23 : -40
PapaRobot : -28
The Gus : -20
orangefanta18 : -10
freensty : 8
FasonJ : 32

The question was "Name an American car maker" and everyone but FasonJ answered "Ford". (He answered "Chrysler"). The "Ford" answer would count as -5 points to orangefanta18 and freensty, and as +5 points to Googlemj3, PapaRobot and The Gus. FasonJ gets 0 points and remains in last.

Boo! FasonJ is an awesome player and would never be in last place.

I'm not sure I understand how this is an "equalizer," since FasonJ didn't get at all equalized. I'm sure it's way more work for you, but to make it a true eqaulizer, you need to count it as the better of the options for the Bottom 50% and the worse of the options for the Top 50%.

So to slightly modify your example, if Googlemj23 had gone with GM, you would count that as a Sheep and score zero since he's in the Top 50%, but count FasonJ's unique as a Reverse Sheep since that would be the better option for him. For the four "Ford" answers, the two Top 50% players who gave it would get +4 and the two Bottom 50% players would get -4.

Like I said, more work for you, so it's up to you how you want to score that.

With luck it'll take a fortnight before all of the habitual Book Talk browsers have seen this and so I'll be able to dive in before the 20-35 number of entrants has been reached.

PS) It'll take me a time before I can fully comprehend the rules!

I'm guessing the use of the word 'book' as opposed to 'story' was deliberate. The Bus has been running quite a few of these and seems to be intentionally precise with his language.

That is how I would score it, with the exception that there is no unique answer bonus this time around, so as not to scare the bibliophiles here. But if there was a combination of Unique Answer + Equalizer Round, you'd be correct.

movieking
07-08-09, 12:58 PM
The possible problem is that there have been King stories that have been apart of a book with a collection of stories that have also been released as standalone books as well, especially after the release of movies.

If a work's been released as a standalone book and part of a larger collection, I think you'd fall within the realm of the question. Just be ready to post a link proving it was released as a standalone book for when the mob challenges your answer.

I don't know if there is one. There's one question I had done that was either R or S depending on the final stock price of a company (after the deadline for entry submission).

I don't know if those questions will be fun or just too complicated. We'll see.

The equalizer questions really screw over people in the top 30-49% or so. You aren't close enough to compete for the top, but you aren't bad enough to get sheep scoring, so you are probably going to get passed by a bunch of people, especially with the first E question only having four answers. The only positive for those people is that there are two in a row, so they might get a little bit back quickly depending on how far they dropped.

I'm not sure why you'd want to level out the scoring. Why should the people who did well on the first 11 questions be punished?

I need to add some macros to my spreadsheet to auto-sort questions, and better format the score list (tabs would be nice). Also maybe something to copy selected cells to another cell for easy pasting would be nice too. Is that the kind of thing you use?

I made a macro to sort the "Formatted Results" tab (the highlighted one with Gumbel's head). That made it easier. Something to sort each question would be nice but it's only used once, since each time you sort a different column.

The thing that helps the most is going through it the night before, formatting all the answers so they match each other, and highlighting the wrong and unique answers.

True story: there was an English class when I was in high school that was required to read "The Hobbit". The class hated the book so much that they revolted, and the teacher was forced to assign something else.

This is basically the same as the Stephen King question that I posted earlier in the thread. I decided not to use the answer that I had in mind because it was a part as a book originally, and then later released on its own.

My vote would be NO.
