I learned today that Barnes & Nobles and BN.com will be having a 50% off Criterion sale from 7/14 - 8/3.

Not sure if this includes their Blu-rays, but I would think so. I'll find out and confirm when I can.

I think they ran this sale or a similar one last year, so I guess it did pretty well for them.

They also have their B2G1 going on right now. It ends July 7th.

If DD does the B1G1 Criterion sale again, then the BN deal becomes much less desirable.

You'll have to wait till August-September for that.

Don't forget B&N has discount links, plus coupons, and free UPS shipping. Could be less than DD for some titles...

Any thought on which titles would come out to a good price point?

It wouldn't be a bad idea to pick up Ran (Kurosawa) and Contempt (Godard) if you don't already own them, since they recently went out of print. My B&N still had both as of last week, although I snagged Contempt as part of the B2G1.

I don't think either of those titles are oop. They just don't have the rights to release them on blu-ray.

Edit: I'm mistaken. They are oop according to the Criterion website.

Not to be a thread crap, but the one good thing about Barnes and Noble is that you know what they're going to charge for their discs.

Hmmmm...had no idea that Contempt went out of print. This was listed as one of their (supposedly) first dozen or so BD titles but has never materialized on that format.

I do own Criterion's SD release of the film; it is excellent and loaded with extras so for anyone who wants it and doesn't have it already, now is the time to make your move.

EDIT: Just checked criterionforum.org. As Neil M. said, BD rights are gone, so perhaps this title is disappearing from the collection for a while, if not for good. Carpe diem.

Stupid question: does this 50% off include Criterion pre-orders? I'd love to get Repulsion for twenty bucks if I could.

When you read the offer details it is referring to select titles online and not in store. It's not surprising B&N stores would have every Criterion on sale since they usually include all DVDs in the store during the B2G1F sales, while online they are on selected titles.

Simply look for the "50% Off Criterion DVDS & Blu-rays" icon on select DVDs online at Barnes & Noble.com.

Just letting you know that I was in my local Barnes & Noble yesterday and the "Benjamin Button" blu-ray already had a 50% off sticker on it... which essentially brings its $39.99 price down to $20 plus whatever local taxes you pay. This was in Rhode Island.

The Seventh Seal BD is included, but it looks like the price just hasn't changed yet. It's listed with the rest of the sale items. You may want to wait to place your order, as I think it's price will drop. Give it til tomorrow, since that's when the sale was supposed to start. Or give customer service a call.

Just wondering what your definition of "a lot" is because the Barnes & Noble sight that I'm looking at seems to have the majority, if not all, of the correct covers. The one mistake that stuck out to me was "Empire Of Passion" being listed as "In The Realm Of Passion."

Has any one tried using the AAA discount? It didn't seem to be applying it to the order. AAASUMMER9 was also not working. I've never used the AAA discount before so I'm not sure how it works, is it not eligible on sale items? I didn't see that listed in the terms. I went through their website, but their logo disappeared from from the top when I entered the check out screen, is that normal?
Also, is it stackable with the other 10% codes? Or do I need to be a BN Member for any of it to apply?

Those $5 coupons are only for people who purchase a membership at a store correct? If I purchase a membership online now, I cannot use them?

Should work with any membership regardless where it was purchased as long as it is registered online. However if you just purchased a membership you could probably only use the second coupon. You have to have either an existing membership, or purchase the membership between the dates listed on the coupon for it to be valid.

You could also use the 10% off Bing cashback followed by a 10% code...that'll get you down to ~60% off list. That's the best combination I've come up with for non-members. Members could use the 15% off code, of course.

You can also use Visa or miltary.com links to get an instant 5% to 6% discount with the 10% coupon, and get no minimum free shipping. If you are paying shipping the Bing rebate is not worth it. Also it usually takes a few days for the rebates to show up on Bing at B&N. On a few occasions they screwed me out of the rebate.

No you don't need to be a B&N member. In fact I found out you can't use the AAASUMMER9 coupon with a B&N membership. You just need a AAA membership to log into their web site for it to work. Not sure why it didn't work from what you described. I would assume the 10% codes should work also, and stack with the AAA 10% discount.

Does anyone know if the AAA discount will work with this sale?

Yes. I used it a while ago but found the coupon will not work if you have a members account. I had to use another account without a membership to get the 15% coupon to work. But you can stack the 10% AAA website discount along with the 15% coupon.

But all the 10% coupons are for only one item, is that correct?

For some reason I am having a hard time understanding this...so you have to place 4 orders of one item (with a different coupon each time), in order to get 4 Criterions at 10% off each?

Darn, I actually have $15 in Borders bucks that are in my account for use next month. OTOH, Criterions are rarely this cheap. I guess I'll pick out one and purchase it. Any opinions on Pierrot le Fou and Bottle Rocket? I really hate doing blind buys on films I haven't seen.

I haven't seen Pierrot le Fou, but I can highly recommend Bottle Rocket.

For the B&N membership, i read this on their website:

"What if I join now but decide later that I no longer want to be a Member? Can I get a refund?

If you purchased your Membership at a Barnes & Noble bookstore, you may cancel the Membership at any store within 30 days of the purchase date for a full refund with the original receipt. If you purchased your Membership online at www.bn.com, you may contact the Member Service Center at 1-866-238-READ within 30 days of the purchase date for a full refund."

So does that mean I can get membership, use it, and cancel it within 30 days? Even if I've used the membership benefits towards the sale? Also, by full refund I assume they mean cash, and not store credit.

thanks for any help.

So does anyone have advice on what the best way to take advantage of the sale would be Member vs. NonMember.

For me as a Member I found that ordering 2 19.99 Blu-Rays using 1 15% off coupon, stackable with my B&N membership, and through Bing cashback yields me those 2 at 16.03 each after tax with free 3-Day Shipping. The cashback discount is also included in that price.

I think Pierrot le Fou is great, but you might not like it if you're looking for a typical narrative. The film has a very improvised feel. It's based on a book, but the director and the actors probably came up with a lot of things on the day of shooting. It'd an odd mix of gangster, romance and musical comedy.

It's also coming out on Blu-ray. I'm still trying to decide if I'm going to upgrade my DVD.

I just called customer service and you can cancel before 30 days even if you make purchases using the membership. They will issue you a full credit, not store credit.

This might make me take the plunge as that price would work out to be around the same price as the B1G1 Free Criterion sale that DD had last year (and which I am hoping they may have again).

I may have overlooked it, in the hype surrounding the upcoming 25% sale w/ DD, but when's the expected date of the BOGO Criterion sale for DD? I usually use that opportunity to snag at least two titles, and I already have my eye on two that I definitely would like to get in that sale.

There is no expected date. Last year they had it in July, one month after their June 20% off sale. They might have it again in August but ilast year was the first time they had that sale so it may not happen again.

Thank you for the response. I tried again this morning after reading your post and it worked with the AAA discount and AAASUMMER9. I couldn't get another 10% code to stack, it seemed to take one or the other, but I was alright with that.
I'm not sure what the issue was last night, the only thing I did different today was going to AAA.com first instead of following the link from here, but it brings you too the same AAA login screen, so I don't see how it would be any different. It must have just been a small glitch or something.

You can't stack multiple coupon codes. You can only use one per order.

I've used the AAA link posted on the coupon page and never had any problems before. In fact I placed an order from it last night and it seemed fine with the exception of the issue I had with the coupon with my members account. But apparently that's normal since when I reviewed the fine print it mentioned the coupon cannot be combined with a B&N membership. Maybe there was a glitch of some sort when you tried.

Not all of the on sale items are marked though. In fact, none of the ones I got were marked. Probably going back tomorrow to check prices on some others I was interested in, (i.e. the big Brazil set, Throne Of Blood.)

At my B&N, which is pretty much brand new, they had a big sign up that said Criterions 50% off. They only had about 7 or 8 BD titles and they all had the big 50% off stickers on them. Just to let you know, when I went in to my local Barnes & Noble today after work, all of the Criterion blu-rays were stickered and their endcap of "New Release" Criterion discs were stickered for the 50% off but none of their hundred or so Criterion discs had the sticker on it.

I had to ask the employee, and she thought it was weird... so, she and I went through every single Criterion DVD with her PDT machine to check them, and I ended up placing a 50% off sticker on every disc in the store. Every one was on-sale, but they just hadn't been stickered, yet.

Once again, it is not. (You asked if the Blu-ray is a criterion release.)

You linked to the long out-of-print Criterion DVD. The more recent DVD release and the Blu-ray are from Sony. The BN website also has Do The Right Thing listed, which is a mistake. (For that title, there's an OOP Criterion and a new release on DVD and BD that is from Universal.)

Personally, I wouldn't buy much if any blind as tastes vary. But there are probably a few I will be blind buying during this sale (mostly from some of my favorite film-makers though).

The 400 Blows and The Seventh Seal are good Blu-ray ones to get. Both are amazing films with great releases IMHO. So, for the sake of recommendations, those two get my top pick. But The Last Metro and The Third Man wouldn't be bad choices either. I'm thinking about ordering them. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson or Wong Kar Wai films Bottle Rocket and Chungking Express are also essential.

The 400 Blows(Essential Arts)

I thought In the Realm of the Senses was good, to a degree, but I can't see myself ever wanting to watch it again. For many it seems to be a love it or hate it kind of film. I wouldn't suggest a blind buy purchase of it.

Was in my local B&N yesterday - the entire collection was 50% off. They did not have The Seventh Seal Blu Ray in stock, which is the only title I was looking for. The manager offered to order it for me, with free shipping to my home. When he went to order it, the title did not have the 50% discount, so he just adjusted the price manually. I sure think it is worth the upgrade... especially from the Sony DVD release, if that's the one you're referring to.

I still can't post links, but head on over to DVDBeavers's site and check out their comparison/review of the Sony DVD, Criterion DVD, and Criterion blu-ray. I think there's a great deal of difference in color and clarity.

I'd say no, for the simple fact that you haven't watched it yet, and you own it. If you don't have the time or desire to watch the SD to see if it's worth the upgrade, I highly doubt you will watch it when you get the Criterion. You'll just have 2 unwatched dvds sitting on the shelf and less money in your wallet.

If you get the BN membership (you can cancel within 30 days), have a Discover Card (10% cash back on BN.com purchases), and are smart about how to split up your orders and which coupons you use, the prices are a bit lower than with DD's B1G1 on Criterions last year (i.e., the lowest non-clearance, non-YMMV price I've seen on Criterions).

For example, I got The Delirious Fictions of William Klein for $15.xx shipped, Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy for $30.23 shipped, and Early Bergman for $24.57 shipped, among many others.

Me too Joe.

I've had dozens of BN.com orders rebate just fine, through 7/9. But the three orders I've placed since 7/10 haven't shown up yet in the "pending" list.

Is anyone else getting their recent bn.com purchases to credit in bing? If so, did you use coupons? TIA.

cgray
07-15-09, 01:19 PM
I believe they used the new name (Bing) to bring in some new rules.

Bing states that they will not give you cashback if you buy something with a coupon.

Here's the text from "Terms and Conditions"

17. Bing Cashback
You will not earn cashback savings on purchases where...(h) you use a separate discount or coupon with your order.

I believe they treat the language "separate discount" as synonymous with "sale item." So, the new cashback program is, IMO, a mediocre deal at best: a usually nominal discount off of retail prices. The new rules don't seem very great.

I have actually had cashback that had not matured the full 60 days removed around the time of the transition from live.com to bing, because they were purchases I had made using coupon codes, etc.

I'm not sure if that explains why bn.com orders aren't showing up.

Thanks for replying cgray.

I've had nothing taken back by bing through July 9, for many many. I've ALWAYS used a coupon, except on those few occasions when I purchased a used item. That doesn't mean you're necessarily wrong of course, just that IME this would be a new post-transition policy for them.

I've had dozens of BN.com orders rebate just fine, through 7/9. But the three orders I've placed since 7/10 haven't shown up yet in the "pending" list.

Is anyone else getting their recent bn.com purchases to credit in bing? If so, did you use coupons? TIA.

It can take 2 to 3 days for the rebates to show up in your Bing.com account from B&N.com. I did a couple of last minute orders before the B2G1F sale ended last week and it took 2 days before the purchases showed up in my account. I used coupons on both purchases. However I've had a few slip through without receiving credit, but overall I've gotten most of them.

Because the 50% off only applies to select titles and and Seventh Seal Blu-ray is apparently not one of them. The reason it still shows up in the list though, is because of the dumb way the B&N website organizes titles and provides the listing. A given title has one entry with many versions in their database and since at least one version of the title is Criterion and the DVD version is 50% off, it shows up in the list that uses their dumb search engine. The same dumbness is the reason why Do The Right Thing and Life of Brian show up in the list, even though those aren't Criterion releases on Blu-ray.

I was in B&N today and the sales clerk said that every Criterion is 50% off and even offered to order something if it wasn't in stock. So, if there's something you're looking for that isn't online, just head to a B&M. They even had 15% off coupons (for members) at the counter. I'm not a member, but he told me about the membership, the 10% off and the 15% off coupon.

Doesn't appear this will be on sale online. Current online prices are $35.99 for the standard DVD, and $39.99 for the blu-ray version. I may try to get the blu-ray version at my local store using a 20% printable coupon with my membership. The 20% coupon though is ymmv since it is technically for renewals.

Along with those, the Shohei Imamura boxset (Pigs, Pimps, and Prostitutes) is now available at the sale price. $40 for that is outstanding, along with the Ingmar Bergman Trilogy.

I'm trying to pace myself by sticking with "necessities" for the time being, but it's hard not to barrel through my dusty wishlist and knock out a ton of them with one swift shot. Give customer service a call and they should send out a pre-paid return label and send out a replacement. You can also do exchanges directly at a store if they have the title in stock.

I knew they gave you a 30 day trial before, but I always figured if they saw you spent $100 they'd know what you were doing. I'd LOVE if it really was as simple as "okay Sir, we're issuing you a refund, expect to see it in a few days, have a nice day" but somehow I strongly doubt it's like that.

Are you using this link?

http://www.aaa.com/aaa/215/discounts/retail/partner/barnes_and_noble/index.htm

When you click the AAA/Barnesandnoble link, does it take you to an AAA page where you log in with your AAA username and password? After I entered that, it took me to the special AAA/B&N site. . . Yes,that's the right link and I've done everything you mentioned.
Everytime the site connects to B&N if I do a search or select any other key (like DVDs) the AAS icon disappears. I called the reps (both at B&N and AAA) and they had no idea what I was talking about. So, I got an e-mail saying that one of my orders was prepared to ship and it showed The Seventh Seal in there and now I just checked the status and it says expected ship date August 5th. The rest of the order (Black Orpheus) already shipped, but it's weird to get an e-mail saying something is going to ship and then saying that it isn't.

I also says that my card will be charged the full amount (for both). Is this a normal practice from Barnes and Noble?

Guh. I didn't realize the AAA 15% coupon was 1-time only.

Does anybody know if that's 1 time per AAA member or 1 time per BN account?

gonna try to find over the weekend:

My Life as a Dog

I've been looking for this also, 2 B & Ns since the sale started & no luck.

It was worth going to the store's though, I've seen a lot of tiles at the stores that aren't on-line.

You can use the Barnes & Noble site to find items at brick-and-mortar locations, in the "Find and reserve an in-store copy" section of the item's page.

My Life as a Dog is listed as in-stock at Princeton and North Brunswick.

This sale is so tempting it's sickening. Thought I could avoid buying Criterions for a while until this popped up.

Placed an order earlier today and got The Double Life of Veronique, My Dinner with Andre, and Videodrome for $18.56 each shipped with the AAA member discount and 15% off one item coupon.

I don't believe, even with DVD Planet sales, that I've gotten Criterion two-disc special edition movies for this cheap. (I missed the B1G1 last year).

My willpower is so weak...(Who am I kidding? I love it).

If it's not in stock at a B&N store you could also try to see if they would do a ship to home order. I thought I remember seeing a few posts that claimed to have success ordering titles at stores and getting them to honor the Criterion sale prices.

I've been collecting Criterions for nearly since they started coming out and this is the cheapest "official" sale I've ever seen.

I remember when $23 for a $39.95 was a great deal. I'm going to pick up some more at my local Barnes and Noble and I should be caught up with all of them.

I've probably watched near 75% off them. I go through with phases with watching. I'll watch all the Fellinis, then all the Godards, Bergmans, etc.

My favorites are probably Pierrot Le Fou, Solaris, The Virgin Spring, The Passion of Joan of Arc, Au Hasard Balthazar, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Pandora's Box and Nights of Cabiria

Even better than this one?

Just should be noted that the DD sale referenced by sandman007 is from <i>last year</i> and is not a current sale.

Do some math .... 50% off = B1G1F.

Do some math .... 50% off = B1G1F.
Indeed...however, BN is 50% off MSRP, whereas DD was B1G1 at their discounted price, which worked out to something like 65% off list.

What keeps BN in this race is all of the additional available discounts, like the member discount or the AAA discount.

Cheato
07-18-09, 09:44 PM
^^Don't be so dismissive. As Fiddlesticks said, DD doesn't charge MSRP, and in addition, almost nobody pays sales tax with them. During that sale, you could get $39.95 Criterions for about $16.20 each, delivered, with another 8% in Cashback from Live/Bing (which gave you 4% on both the B1 and the G1). Final cost was $14.90 each.

Alternatively, ordering 2 $39.95 Criterions from B&N, at $17.99 with a member discount, minus 15% on one, with 10% cashback and free shipping, and, let's say 6% sales tax as an average, results in a final cost of $15.98 each.

That means that 53.4% off (B&N, now) = B1G1F (DD, then).

Considering the state of the economy during the two time periods, a dollar now is worth much more than it was a year ago (i.e., not as easily disposable), for many people, so from a macroeconomic standpoint, that would change things further in favor of the B1G1F as being a better sale (which was the point sandman007 was making).

But is that enough math for you?

Of course, there are other factors. With DD's B1G1, you had to order an even number of titles. And you had to group your orders by price to maximize the effectiveness.

And with B&N, you have to deal with limited coupons or multiple accounts, unpredictable cashback behavior (I have never had it fail with DD or any other retailer I've used it with, but have had it fail two out of three times with B&N), and placing many more orders if you want to get a bunch of stuff at the best prices.

Final note: Many of the $39.95 Criterions are priced at between $25 and $28 right now at DD. If the sale happens again, and IF those prices remain the same, it would be a much better deal than this B&N sale.

For those in the know who have ordered DVD's from B&N online.
What has been your experiences with how they package their
DVD orders? Also they are shipping my order by UPS. Every online
order for DVD's that I have ever made was shipped by just regular
US Mail. Never had one problem. For those who have received DVD's
by both of them, how does UPS compare? Should I be concerned.
The order was for ten criterions. Thanks in advance for any info/insights.
Very much appreciated.

When does this sale end?

Edit: I read the first post, it looks like 8/3.

So wouldn't it be good for a non-member to wait until July 22nd or 23rd and potentially get to use a 20% off coupon?

JoeStSteven
07-19-09, 08:00 AM
yes and no. no bing with that coupon + you will need multiple accounts to use it more than once. and it's only good off of one item.

B&N packs their stuff very well. I ordered 8 or 9 DVDs, they came in an oversized box. 2 were damaged , in my very anal retentive opinion, and I am waiting on replacements and a mailing label from B&N for easy returns. Overall I'm very pleased and I plan on ordering possibly the rest of the Crites that I need from this sale .. I just hope I'm not kicking myself if DD does a B1G1F sale.

While I loved the DD B1G1 sale, I'll note (in case it hasn't already been said) that the savings there resulted from having to buy two with the same listed prices, whereas a customer who only wants one Criterion (or can't match up items with different list prices) can pick & choose more selectively.

Just sayin'.

Didn't the B1G1 free deal at DD coincide with Criterion moving to another warehouse and putting all their stuff on clearance before the introduction of their new website? I remember they had an across the board sale (though not as enticing as DD) at criterion.com, which I used to snag the essential art house book.

If this is the case, wouldn't it seem this was a one time deal? Am I remembering the timing of these events correctly?

Wanted to get The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but did not show up on sale online. Checked inventory at the nearest location and went in with my 10% coupon. They couldn't find it but after looking at the two spots they had all their Criterions, I found it on the New Releases shelf. Prior to that, the sales clerk offered to order it in for me as it was part of the sale. I wound up buying it and Do The Right Thing. Had to hold off on a couple of others, but I'll probably wind up there again later today.

Hmmm....so Bing doesn't work when you use a 15% off member only coupon code(not the AAA one)? I placed an order yesterday through bing.com and used a 15% off member code and I haven't been credited yet. Has anyone gotten bing to work with a 15% off member code?

I gotta say, I prefer The Naked City, but all of the Dassin films that are on Criterion are all so incredible! I might use this sale to complete that set, since they are usually a little more expensive. I noticed one of them isn't available for discount on the online portion of the sale though.
