Don't usually see 20% coupons very often, and was surprised they showed up during the Criterion sale. Over the past several months B&N has been issuing once a month one or two 20% online coupons similar to these. I would make use of them while you can since I doubt there will be anymore for the sale. If you are not a member I would expect only some more 10% coupons next week. I'm not even sure anymore member 15% coupons will appear since B&N has cut back on those as well in recent months.

Made a second, and probably final, order today:
Thieves' Highway 1 $16.31
Grey Gardens 1 $15.85
The Lady Eve 1 $16.31
Repulsion 1 $17.99
The way they break down the discounts is really odd. I used 2 $5 coupons online, plus member discount.

I think I may have figured out the way to get the best possible deal in-store, on standard $40 Criterions.
Buy four, use both of the $5 coupons and both of the 20% off coupons. This brings the total to $54.80, enabling you to use the "transaction" coupon $5 off $50. Total is now $49.80 for four $40 Criterions. Also, I'll get 5% cashback for using Discover.
Now, I'm not sure, but I think if I added a 25 cent bob-bon to my order, making the total $50.05, I could have used the other $5 transaction coupon, making the total $45.05 for four $40 Criterions and a bon-bon (and 5% cashback). Talking to the clerk after the transaction, we were pretty sure it would have worked. I didn't want to push my luck and ask for a re-do.

It varies depending on the store, but most seem to do it in a single transaction for me. One store claimed they couldn't and had to do 3 separate transactions. I hit three different stores today since I had to drive about 50 miles to pick up a reserved copy of Nights of Cabiria. On the way home I stopped at 2 other stores since I was going right past them. I used the two different $5 off $20 coupons without any problems.
Quick question: Is it possible to print out the $5 off $20 and use it more than one time? The coupon states you can use it only once and I was wondering how you guys got past that loophole.
Could anyone recommend a good German or Italian film? I was thinking about picking up La Strada or Nights of Cabibria.

Because this and other sales are doing so well, do you think there's any chance in hell of Criterion bringing down their MSRP? I think that with lower prices, these would constantly be flying off the shelves...
imho, and to paraphrase you, no chance in hell -wink-
people are highly adaptive, so if criterions were priced this way all the time, we would wait for a sale :D

That hasn't been enforced.
Coupon use is always YMMV. Some cashiers will just scan every coupon you give them, some will read all the fine print and try to limit you if possible. Some of the coupons say "not valid with other offers" but they still work if scanned.
My best transaction yesterday, the one detailed earlier, the cashier called the store manager over, they both read the coupons carefully, but he told her to "go for it" and let her scan everything.

If you're lucky you may be able to use either online code multiple times. I was able to use the first code twice, and the second code 3 times before they came up redeemed. Someone else said they used the first code at least 8 times. However one of them is expiring on the 27th. If you are going to use them better do it soon with the first coupon.
Both are usually accepted, ignore the renewal requirement.
Thanks Trevor, I appreciate the post, unfortunately I tried using one this morning & got shot down. The guy called a manager over & everything, but she said that it states right on the coupon that a renewal for a year's membership is required. She even shot down my $5 coupon at first, but that states right on the fine print "list price before coupons & discounts" so they can't argue that one.
No big deal though, didn't stop me from buying more, can't really complain w/ getting Solaris for $13 & this awesome box set for $35, when it's at least $90 everywhere else.
^ Yeah, coupons are always YMMV. Fortunately, or unfortunately if you're my investment counselor, I've had good luck using all the coupons multiple times.
I'm knocking on wood as I say this, but I wonder why B&N can't do something as simple as locking each B&N membership to 1 use per coupon.

Yes to all of the above! However I've had success using them in store with my membership during the Criterion sale without renewing. Besides the member discount it should stack with any cashback discounts offered by credit cards if you have a card with such an offer. Maybe you could get it to stack with the $5off/$50 coupon (see Trevor's example).

It's an excellent film, if you like intellectual sci-fi as opposed to action sci-fi. It's very deliberately slow paced. If you appreciate science fiction that makes you think rather than giving you explosions and lasers, then get it. In my opinion, it's one of the best ever made, and the Criterion set is fantastic.

I went out this afternoon and just happened to be near another B&N store, so I couldn't resist getting a few more Criterions. I tried Trevor's idea of stacking all the coupons with the $5 off $50 but was quickly turned down.
In fact I got a real hard ass woman working in the DVD section that didn't even want to honor the $5 off coupons. She claimed the coupons didn't qualify because the DVDs were less than $20. I politely pointed out in the fine print it said the $20 selling price was before discounts, including member discounts, and that the DVDs were priced over $39 before the 50% off and 10% members discount.
She kept saying no they couldn't accept the coupons, but I kept insisting they were valid with the Criterion sale until she said she would have to call her manager to discuss it. Initially the manager also said no, but I kept pointing out the terms of the fine print until she finally asked for the manager to come to the register.
When the manager arrived I told her the DVDs should qualify under the coupon terms, which she read over several times. Finally she okayed the transaction, and I had my discounted DVDs. First time I had any trouble with a store accepting the $5 off coupons, but if you keep beating them over the head with the fine print you should get the DVDs.

I got the following in store today:
-Contempt - $13.xx
-The Hit - $9.xx
-The Last Metro (BD) - $13.xx
I had such an incredibly hard time using multiple coupons. The first B&N I went to, at first he said the coupon wouldn't work since the totals fell below $20 and things needed to be $20+ for it to work. I suggested scanning the coupon before entering my membership and everything, and when he did that it worked fine. This first guy was willing to do as many transactions as I wanted using a coupon each time, but I only did it for two (TLM & The Hit) because that store didn't have as big a selection as the B&N across town, and I wanted to go over there to see what they had. I did, and the girl at the other store just refused to do multiple transactions, no way she would do it. So I decided to go back to the first store where the guy was being so great, but he was now gone and some old man was there instead, and he was just as against doing multiple coupons as well, so I was only able to get to use the coupon three times.
I also had my cousin with me, and the first guy let him use my phone number so he could get this deal to work also, but again, the other two people just flat out wouldn't let anything happen that the first guy allowed us. We should have just bought everything we wanted at that first store when we had the chance.
Oh well, we still got great deals. He got the following two:
-Bicycle Thieves - $13.xx
-The Last Emperor (BD) - $13.xx

It is a tough call.I think at every Barnes and Noble store you will get a different deal from reading the post here.
Looks like some people here are getting $ 5 off(in store) on $14.99 and $19.99 Criterions.I don't know if they are B&N members or not.
This is the best instore deals($8.50 and $12.99)
The 20% coupons are also very good deals too.
Also AAA usually just works online, but check your local store too.

If you are a B&M member, when checking out, have them scan the DVD and the $5/off coupon before giving them your membership information. In doing so, you'll get the $39.99 listed Criterions for $13.xx after all of the discounts and you'll get the $29.99 listed Criterions for $9 after the discounts.
None of that matters now since the $5 off coupon expired on Sunday, unless there's another one around.

P.S. - That $5 off CD coupon will be a sweeeeet deal for Beatles fans come 09/09/09: The remasters are currently $12.81 each. The 10% member discount, takes 'em down to $11.53...minus $5 = $6.53 !

I was going to pick up Mizoguchi's Fallen Women box at the Arlington, VA B&N, but it was no longer there, although the Web site it was available in-store.
So, instead I used the 5/20 coupons to get

I just need to get the Mizoguchi box, and order Salesman and Fiend without a Face online, and I will have exhausted my Criterion wishlist.

I used the $5 per title, but I could only use 1 20% coupon. The clerk wouldn't accept the other one. I really should have maximized this deal even more, by doing these transactions at separate stores, but frankly it's not worth the extra hassle of traffic and time. I still got a good deal.

Thanks for the heads up. I was able to get 1 of the 5 off 50 not both (even though the second would still be above the threshold). But still got all 4 for < $14 each. I think thats a heck of a deal for Criterion blurays. This beats any deal that you can get at B&N online and don't risk getting invalid cashback.

Simple guide to maximizing savings for the B&N 50% off Criterion sale - 1st draft
In-store
A B&N membership costs $25 per year, and gives you an extra 10% off (after the 50% off). It can be cancelled for a refund within the first 30 days.
Check Laser's awesomely organized regular B&N coupon thread (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains/533548-barnes-noble-coupon-thread-part-2-a.html), post #1, for all the current coupons.
Look carefully at each coupon, some are in-store only, some are online only, some are both. Print your desired in-store coupons. Here are a few of them:
20% renewal (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nav.asp?r=1&PID=29053) - 15% renewal (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nav.asp?r=1&PID=29052)- 10% everyone (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nav.asp?r=1&PID=28710)- 15% everyone (http://cart2.barnesandnoble.com/shop/promodetails.asp?x=04122612&promoid=6367) - 10% everyone (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nav.asp?r=1&PID=28758) - 20% renewal (http://cart2.barnesandnoble.com/shop/promodetails.asp?x=04122612&promoid=6405) - $5/$5/$5 coupons (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nonav.asp?PID=28832&cds2Pid=28833)
Stacking coupons is YMMV (your mileage may vary). Most have wording saying one coupon per transaction, but they still combine if scanned.
The 20% (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nav.asp?r=1&PID=29053) and 15% renewal (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nav.asp?r=1&PID=29052) coupons are YMMV, but most cashiers will take them even if you are not renewing. This will take an additional 20/15% off the highest price item, after the 50% is deducted, and after the 10% off for membership. (Math geek in me wants to clarify that total savings off MSRP is not 50+10+20 = 80%, but really 64% off MSRP since the stacked discounts are off the discounted total(s), not the MSRP.)
The $5/$5/$5 coupons (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/email/nonav.asp?PID=28832&cds2Pid=28833)are the only ones that are specifically meant to stack. One will take $5 off a $20 (before discount) DVD/BD, one will take $5 off a $10+ CD, and the other will take $5 off your total if it is over $50 after all discounts. So you'll probably need to buy 3 Criterions and a CD, or 4 Criterions, to use the $5 off $50 portion of this coupon. Will link another's post detailing this when I find it.
The $5 off $20 coupon is perhaps the "best" overall coupon, definitely is on titles $40 and under. Note that the original MSRP is what needs to be $20 or more, not the 50% off price. So a $29.99 MSRP Criterion would be on sale for $15.00, minus $1.50 for membership, minus $5 coupon, for a total of $8.50.
For box sets or any item over $50 MSRP, the 20% coupons would be best.
Most coupons say one use per person, but YMMV.
Use a Discover card for 5% cashback.
On-line
Pending.

 I F'n pre-ordered that from Amazon I think for $21. I am going to be so depressed when this sale ends. If it was a weekend sale, or just one day, it wouldn't even be that bad. But I've made about 7 or 8 trips to various B&N's, plus going the past two weekends, it's like a routine now, stop in every few days, & try out a new Criterion for $9, what the hell. It will feel outrageous going back to pre-ordering Criterions for around $25.

Trevor, nice summary on the use of coupons. Thank you.
Now my question(s). There seems to two types of membership coupons when a membership is purchased or renewed. Those offering 20 or 15% when renewing or the stackable $5. when a membership is purchased. On line non-renewing members can use the latter but locked out from the former. But I am interested in store usage. It seems any member can use the $5. ones, but can any non-renewing member use the 20 or 15% coupons? If so, and this applies to both sets of coupons, can they be used multiple times, printing out the same coupon multiple times, but using the same membership number for the purchase? I am presuming the purchases are made on seperate days or as part of a different transaction.

Technically, all the coupons are pretty clear in their fine print, and no one with only one membership should be able to use every coupon.
But the computers allow one of each different coupon per transaction, one coupon per item, plus one additional 'transaction coupon", the $5 off $50.
So it really is YMMV. You may be able to use 7 different coupons per transaction, five times in a row with the same cashier, or you may get denied every single coupon (legitimately, unless you renew a membership on the spot, or created a membership during the terms of the fine print).
In reality, most people have no trouble using one coupon per transaction, and then using the same coupon the next day/store.

Criterion was set to release Contempt and Ran on Blu-ray (region A), but lost the rights at the last minute. The DVDs went out of print when this happened, although they're not hard to find...yet. IMO, they're both great movies.
Both are being released in the UK in September on Blu-ray, but they are likely to be region B.

We may yet see those titles on Criterion Blu-ray. I would imagine their legal department is in negotiations to get the BD rights for Region A.

Isn't criteriondvd.com, though, the company that many people haven't heard from in a while after paying for Criterion discs? I know their site hasn't been updated since the first 5 Criterion blu-rays were released.

This is definitely one of my favorite sales this year. In all honesty though, it will kill me. I've already picked up 12-13 titles since this sale started :)
Picked up some more stuff this afternoon.
Repulsion (DVD)
Pierrot Le Fou
My final trip will probably be on Friday when I get paid. There about 7-8 titles I still want to get that were at my local store.

If money is tight, best to wait or simply pick up Contempt at your local library. That said, I think that Contempt is an interesting film and the supplements are near if not the best of any two-disc Criterion release I can think of.

Was finally able to get into the Barnes and Noble and take advantage of this sale. Was able to get most of what was on my wish list in one fell swoop. I got:
Rashomon
Friends of Eddie Coyle
Last Emperor
El Norte
Lord of the Flies
Beauty and the Beast
Was going to get The Hit and For All Mankind but they didnt have them. So I ordered the Hit. Should be here in a couple of days.

For someone that lives in Canada, Criterion's are hard to find for a reasonable price. I was holding out until DD had another B1G1 sale, but there is no indication that was going to happen so I jumped on this one. I picked up nearly all of the Kurosawa's that I didn't have for less than half of what it would cost here (and that includes shipping/foreign exchange). Excellent sale.
I was hoping The Hidden Fortress would come back in stock before the 20% coupon expired but that didn't happen. That is the last one I need....
I was also looking at a couple other Japanese director's but wasn't sure about the blind purchases. Can anyone tell me about Kenji Mizoguchi or Yasujiro Ozu recommendations? From what I've read they are with Kurosawa as the top 3 Japanese director's ....

I want to, even though Contempt is one I haven't seen before, but I'm trying to figure out what I can live without for now.
For what it's worth, Godard is my all-time favorite director, & for whatever reason, even though many consider it his crown jewel, Contempt is my least favorite film of his, & the one I want to re-watch the least. I'd hold out & wait for an eventual Blu-release. I would much more recommend Band of Outsiders if you don't have it, or the recently released 2 or 3 Things.

I wouldn't suggest anyone buy DVDs if it's really going to break them (or if they're broke already), but I bought Contempt blind a few years ago and very much enjoyed it; found it very clever and subversive.
And I concur that the extras are very good too.

I already picked up Band of Outsiders during the sale. What an amazing film that is. Did you catch my list of titles acquired during this sale? It's a huge list. I wasn't planning on getting 2 or 3 Things I Know about Her right now but as per your recommendation I think I'll definitely pick it up before the sale's over. I may just hold off on Contempt for now (a Blu-ray release would, of course, be preferred).
While I will admit to having limited knowledge of Godard, I will say that every film I have seen of his so far I have loved. I can't wait to discover more.

Mizoguchi's Ugetsu is one of my favorite movies, and I would also recommend When a Woman Ascends the Stairs. Mikio Naruse is considered a women's director, and Hideko Takamine seems to have been his favorite actress.
I have the Mizoguchi and Ozu Eclipse sets but haven't watched them yet. The Eclipse sets are good bargains if you just want the movies, and give you a chance to see several movies by the same director with similar themes.
My top 3 Japanese directors right now are Mizoguchi, Naruse and Akira Kurosawa. I had the good fortune to see nine of Naruse's movies during a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in the 1980s. His films haven't been widely available in the US (I assume that is also true in Canada), but I have read that he has a strong reputation among Japanese critics.

I just watched Vivre sa Sie (It's My Life, or My Life to Live) on Sunday, probably one of Godard's best. Anna Karina plays a wannabe actress who ends up becoming a street walker. I watched the UK DVD; I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion announces it soon. They really need to release this along with Antonioni's The Red Desert.
I'm still trying to decide if I need to get Pierrot le Fou on Blu-ray. Already have the DVD, and it wasn't cheap.

I liked both Ugetsu and Sansho the Bailiff quite a bit. Ugetsu actually had some similarities to an anime I watched years ago called Windaria (I believe they were based on the same story, although Windaria threw in fantasy, sci-fi, and a dash of Romeo & Juliet). My problem with Ozu is that a lot of his films sound very similar. I own and have seen Late Spring, and An Autumn Afternoon sounds like it's the same story.

Wow, just checked the site and lots of titles are now showing up as unavailable to order. I have a few of them in my wish list, where they show up as "Special Order" and as shipping in 3-5 weeks. The sale must be sucking their stock dry.
Got notification that my Friends of Eddie Coyle shipped, but from KY; all my previous titles from the sale came from a NJ warehouse. It's projected I should get that one within the next few days.
I also ordered Bertolucci's 1900 last week (as one of the $3.99 Paramount titles). It's listed on my account as not shipping until 8/3, although it still says that it ships in 24 hours on the web site. Either B&N needs to update their site, or they have a big backlog of orders from the sale starting to take its toll.
Now you'll have to excuse me; I believe I just heard the "thunk" of the UPS man leaving Seven Samurai on my front porch.

An Autumn Afternoon does not have the "same story" as Late Spring. You may be thinking of Late Autumn, which is a remake (really a re-working) of Late Spring. The English language names of these films tends to lead to a lot of confusion!
Ozu's films (at least his postwar films) have often been subject to criticism such as this. They all deal more or less with family issues, often the marriage of a daughter, and frequently touch on aging and the disintegration of the family unit. They tend to be more observational in character than plot-driven. There are certainly similarities from one film to the next, both in story and filmmaking technique, but each stands on its own, and most are acknowledged masterpieces. Tokyo Story, for example, is considered by many to be one of if not the greatest film ever made. If you like any one of his films from Late Spring forward, you'll very probably like them all; but if not, you may find all of them dull.
Bobbyk1113, probably the best way to start with Ozu is with the Late Ozu Eclipse box. It's relatively cheap, especially with this sale, and has five completely wonderful films. But just because you like Kurosawa does not necessarily mean you'll like Ozu; none of the Ozu films available from Criterion/Eclipse is like Yojimbo or Ran in the least. Ozu and Kurosawa have little in common beyond nationality--and greatness!

I'm not so much looking for works similiar to Kurosawa, but more interested in Japanese-style film-making and Japanese culture (both pre-postwar). I find the contrast between eastern and western film-making fascinating and wanted to explore more of what Japanese cinema had to offer. I considered the boxsets but would rather check out 1 or 2 great films that include bonus features than a handful of lesser-known films in a barebones package. Thanks for the input though!

I only just recently discovered the little gems White Dog and Wise Blood, and was shocked that I wasn't already familiar with them. This may be an extremely broad question, but what are some other little hidden gems like this that I may be overlooking? Here are the Criterions I already own:
If your primary experience of Japanese cinema is with Kurosawa (who was very western for a Japanese director), I would highly recommend going with Sansho the Baliff or Ugetsu over anything by Ozu. I'm sure some would argue the point, but Ozu is a very Japanese director and in many cases I've come across, people who aren't familiar with the stylistic differences in eastern cinema who try to jump right into Ozu are often put off by the material.

IanUngstad has a point, and you may want to tread cautiously into Ozu world. Personally, it took me two or three viewings before I connected with what Ozu was doing, but when I did connect, I was hooked. I'm not such a huge fan of "extra features;" personally, I'd get Late Ozu and buy Donald Richie's book Ozu (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Ozu/Donald-Richie/e/9780520032774/?itm=3). But Tokyo Monogatari (aka Tokyo Story) is a must-have, and it has the wonderful "I Lived, But..." documentary on Ozu (as well as a commentary from David Desser that I have not heard and so can't comment on.) Also, Early Summer is a magnificent film that some have described as a good entry-point for Ozu, and it comes with a Donald Richie commentary as well as an interesting featurette with three of his former crewmembers and a liner-notes essay by David Bordwell.
I don't really have much to say about Mizoguchi. I like his films fine, some more than others; Sansho the Bailiff is an undeniably great film. (I personally don't care much for Ugetsu Monogatari.) Here again I'd go for the Eclipse, since they are more the type of films I like, but I can't argue against Sansho, perhaps coupled with Early Summer or Tokyo Monogatari.
You've got a wonderful world waiting for you.

For film geeks, it's very hard to resist a brand new Blu-Ray, let along a Criterion edition for $13.
I will say at least for me though, despite some blind buying during this sale, I'm really trying to stop buying movies I will likely never watch again, or not watch for a very long time. I have a couple of questions on some films. I'm going to pick up Kicking and Screaming tomorrow. I'm also thinking about buying Metropolitan. I've read that both films are similar to one another. Is Metropolitan worth a blind buy if I'm also purchasing Kicking and Screaming?
If I had choice between Wages of Fear and Repulsion which one should I pick? I'm leaning toward Repulsion.
DVD's bought list (sorry its small):
Third Man (BR)
Touchez Pas Au Grisbi
Withall and I
Chungking Express
Wishlist (based on probability of purchase):
Band of Outsiders
Kicking and Screaming
Le Notti Bianche
The Killers
Pepe Le Moko
Repulsion
Metropolitan
Breathless
Contempt
Wages of Fear

That's my problem too as I'm buying essentially blind. I did catch most of Band of Outsiders online the other day and loved it. I had already seen Third Man multiple times and loved it on subsequent viewings. On some of these criterions, Bn has the trailer so that's helpful. I've enjoyed multiple viewings of Wages Of Fear and the recent 2 disc set's extra made it even more so.
Having seen Repulsion during an early theatrical run, there were moments that shook up the audience as her mental state deteriorated on screen. After rewatching the film on DVD (not this CC transfer), I found the film as a whole to be less than I remembered and could barely watch it through. The young Deneuve sisters were a pleasure to observe.
For years I thought the second female lead was played by Catherine real life older sister, Françoise Dorléac, who died in an auto accident in 1967. My, she was beautiful...

Note that the original MSRP is what needs to be $20 or more, not the 50% off price. So a $29.99 MSRP Criterion would be on sale for $15.00, minus $1.50 for membership, minus $5 coupon, for a total of $8.50.
Although I know that people have reported success applying the $5 coupon to $30 MSRP Criterions, it's really the most YMMV part of the whole process. The coupon language is "B&N Selling Price," not "list price" or "sticker price." B&N Selling Price is defined as "the price at the cash register before taxes and discounts... are applied." The coupon also mentions "current B&N price." So it's open to interpretation and I could argue it both ways. I realize that the computer recognizes the coupon, but with many clerks you may not even get that far. I have had no issues applying the coupon to $40 Criterions at 5 different B&Ns, but not a single store would allow me to apply it to even one $30 Criterion. So, YMMV.

Does anyone know if The Hidden Fortress is OOP? DD's website has it listed as "discontinued" and it has been the only Kurosawa film that has been consistently "unavailable" to order on the B & N site. The rest (including) Ran have been restocked. I'm considering just buying the Essential Arts version seeing as though the only supplement is the short George Lucas interview, but I noticed the EA version does not have the 3.0 mono track either...

Did anyone else get this message regarding their pre-release order for Repulsion on blu-ray from BN.com? -
'We regret to inform you that the release date for the pre-ordered merchandise listed below has been changed. We expect to ship the item(s) soon and will send you an email when it is ready to leave our warehouse. If we cannot acquire the merchandise within 30 days, we will notify you by email.
Please accept our sincere apologies for the delay.

My order is now showing an expected shipping date of August 27, 2009. WTF....
It will probably ship much sooner. I had a couple of orders with an expected ship date of August 12 ship last night.

I ordered this just after midnight on Monday and it shipped out this morning. Hopefully your copy will ship out sooner rather than later.
Yeah, my blu-ray copy of "Repulsion" shipped out on Monday, as well.
Yesterday, though, my local B&N store had only received the DVD version at the store and when I had the employee look up the blu-ray version, it was still listed as a pre-order (not available) for some reason.

It isn't... Not really. I placed one final order with my membership discount and one last 15% off code and that's it. Got Repulsion on Blu-ray for $17.50 and 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her for $13.50 (total cost shipped). Not the greatest deal by any means but pretty good for a final order. I'm done though. Without the 20% off codes and stack-able $5 off codes, and more selection (they pulled the Truffaut films I wanted) I'm going to wait on another sale to order more.Of course, that's more than 100% reasonable for my wallet considering I ordered way too much from this sale to begin with. I got quite the haul. I'm looking forward to watching them. Several were some of my favorites, while many others were blind buys (especially for titles in the Eclipse series). I think I ordered 9 of the Eclipse sets (I had none of them before) which is pretty much what I wanted of what they have put out so far. With many of them being $15-20 each for 3 films or $20-25 for 5 the deals were excellent all around.

I just ordered Documentaries of Louis Malle for $35 shipped after AAA 10% and a 10% coupon.
I wanted to order it earlier with the 20% coupon earlier, but it's been out of stock.
Still a great deal for something that usually goes for about $75-80 shipped.
This will probably be my last order. I think my wife has reached her limit of BN boxes arriving at the door...

Which are the best NYC stores to go to, and will they allow you to use multiple coupons in one transaction? Thanks!
I only used one coupon for each transaction. I've been to 3 stores in Manhattan and they all allowed me to make another transaction using the same $5 coupon.
In terms of selection, the store on Fifth & 46th had the best stock. The manager there was very helpful and made sure the displays were always filled(they had 3 separate display areas for Criterions so be sure to look for all 3).

To get the $5 off coupon to work on those titles, you need to make sure that the cashier scans the BD and coupon before entering your membership number to give you that discount as well.
My point is just that some clerks won't apply the coupon because the "current B&N price" is less than $20.

My point is just that some clerks won't apply the coupon because the "current B&N price" is less than $20.
That's because they are misinterpreting the fine print of what is the selling price on the coupon. Most of the Criterion titles at the stores are marked either $29.99 or $39.99 before taxes and discounts. That meets the $20 selling price as they define it. It's $20 or more at the cash register before taxes, discounts, including members discounts are applied.

It's not really a misinterpretation; rather, it's one possible interpretation of the definition in the fine print. Like I said in my earlier post, I could argue it both ways. The counterargument is that "the price at the register" before taxes and discounts are applied is the price that scans in the register before taxes and manual discounts are applied. That's a reasonable interpretation, and that's why I haven't argued with any clerks that refused to apply the coupon.

The first price I see on my cash register receipt is either $29.99 or $39.99 before the 50% discount is reflected on the next line, and followed by my members discount on the next one. Doesn't say before manual discounts on the coupon. I'm no lawyer but if it went to court it wouldn't surprise me B&N would lose with the wording on the coupon. Of course if you don't argue they are not going to honor it, but most stores I have visited it has not been an issue. Even if that is what they meant before manual discounts the $39.99 titles should still qualify since they are scanning at $20 before members discounts.

I feel the same, but then again, the titles I really wanted most I bought online first , so I don't mind that I paid a little more for them. The titles that I am buying now in the store are my second tier of most wanted, so paying less for them kind of fits.

Out of 4 or 5 orders I have received. One shipment of Dvd's had 3 that where damaged(I think during shipping)the box looked in good shape.
Anyway I just called CS last week, and let them know A few cases and disc where damage. They just wanted to know which ones.
They sent out a prepaid return label for the returning them USPS.
And they must of sent out the replacements the same day,as they came the day after receiving the return label..
Cheers
Also another good thing about this sale.I think we well see alot more Criterions for sale or for trade on DVDtalk.I know I have about 10 or so I want to trade for others.
I'm going to post mine in the next week or so.

Any thoughts on whether to get the Last Emperor 4-disc DVD or the blu-ray? From what I gather the extras are pretty much the same and all in SD. So, it basically comes down to whether you want better audio/video on the theatrical cut or if you want the extended cut which is not on the blu-ray.

Well, I went in and gave it my all today. I went for the gusto and came up short a bit.
I bought a membership, and had all the $5 off coupons with me. I printed out 4 $5 off $20 DVD. 1 $5 off one $10 cd, one $5 off $50 purchase, and one 20% off for members.
Once I showed her all my coupons, she went and called the main manager. She immediately began to wonder how I got them. At first I didn't know what she meant, and I told her I got them on their website. She then told me the people who get the coupons usually don't get them until after they've been members, and they'd receive them in the mail. Again I told her I found them on their website.
So the main manager comes over, more or less says the same thing, but tells her to try the coupons to see if they work. They do, she uses 1 of each, when she's about to hit total order, I asked her "what about the other 3 coupons?" The main manager then proceeds to tell me that I can only use one coupon per transaction. I then asked if she could just un-ring everything, and sell me each DVD in a separate transaction. Then I got this response "well what we just did was us showing you extensive courtousy, since they come in the mail, normally we would not be able to do what we just did." I knew he was not going to budge.
I ended up paying around $14.50 for 4 Criterions. A good deal, but I mainly only bought the other two to capitalize off the $5 off coupon. I'll just return them tomorrow and rebuy them with the coupons. If they try to deny me again I'll just return the other 2 I just bought mainly to get a better deal.
Thanks for the extensive coupon coverage guys!

Working in retail myself, seeing people on these boards posting stuff like that makes me want to throw up on myself.
It is our job to ring up customers among many other things. It is also our job to follow the rules on said coupons. If a coupon says that it limits one per customer, or it cannot be combined with existing sales or discounts, are we not doing our job in enforcing that rule?
Retail is a way many of us pay bills, put clothes on our back and put a roof over our heads. It's a job. Hearing people talk about those in retail like we are slaves is pretty ridiculous. I'm all for hearing people vent about employees that can't do standard stuff, but hearing you post what you just did because a Manager and Associate denied you using the same coupon or coupons in several different transactions. I bought 4 more yesterday with the $5 coupon. Got my first case of a cashier not honoring the coupon (at 46th & 5th ave), but since there are 5 to 6 stores to choose from in Manhattan, I moved on.
The store at Lincoln triangle has an unbelievable display...almost every movie in stock with tons of copies of the newest titles.
I can't believe that I have now bought over 30 titles since this sale has began and I am almost completed with my Criterion want list. My definiton of crazy:
I own the first OOP printing of The 400 Blows, the re-release, the Complete Antoine Doniel set, and I have just now purchased the Blu-ray. The craziest part is that I haven't had the chance to watch any copies of it yet :)

Please, at least tell me you've seen the film before. Then I will at least partially understand.
I regret not ordering the Antoine Doinel set. I didn't because I already own the 400 Blows Blu-ray.

So I walk in yesterday with the intention of buying one measly box set utilizing the 20% coupon. After several minutes of finally convincing them to actually honor the coupon, I place Pigs, Pimps & Prostitutes on the counter followed by the coupon after the set has been scanned.
The kid at the register can't get it to apply and gets the manager to come over. After roughly 15 minutes she tells me can't get the coupons to stack. I say it's only 1 coupon! She was apparently referring to the member discount and the 50% Criterion sale stacking with the coupon.
I tell her to forget it and that I have a $5 coupon. I run and grab a copy of The Wages of Fear on Blu-ray. Success!
At this point I'm frustrated and just wanna get the hell out of there. As I get in the car I decide to check the receipt ...the coupon applied was that elusive 20% one!! :hairpull:
This was a day after being denied the stacking $5 three-fer ...yet again. Any possible future orders are going to be online only even if it is more.

I've seen it and loved it. That's probably the only way I can somehow justify those purchases.

Are there any extras exclusive to the OOP and restored single releases? If not, you could probably easily sell them and recoup what you paid for the Blu-ray (you might even make something extra). Then you can just hold onto the complete set and the 400 Blows Blu-ray release.

Actually, unfortunately, it is. It's not available for ordering on the site right now and no local B&N stores carry Criterion DVD's.
I should have ordered it when I figured out a way to stack the $5 discount and earlier 20% off code. It would have been $12 a film (not even counting the 400 Blows disc, or the shorts included). I can only regret. :(

It worked for less than a day, as far as I know. I ordered a decent number of Eclipse sets as a result. Then it stopped working.

Sadly, Salesman isn't available online or at a B&M store, so it may have to wait until next time, which is just as well considering the gargantuan amount of $$ I've frittered away on this sale.
/You know, I've always liked that word "gargantuan", so rarely have the opportunity to use it

Bought 6 more today at 2 B&N stores so now I have only 1 title left on my buy list, Days of Heaven.
I am trying not to look at my credit card, but if I do, I want my wife nearby with the smelling salts.

Wow, I'm really late to the sale...I've been out of town and internet-less for six weeks. As a non-member, can someone lay out how I can get the cheapest deals? Sign up for a trial and then use a combination of coupons? Or are there coupons that non-members can use too? As much information as you have would be great! I really want to pick up a few things before the sale ends.

I took the effort to compile all that information just for you. It's right here:

LASERMOVIES does yeoman's work of updating it every day or so. Scour it for the best online and in-store coupons. IMHO, it's not worthwhile to buy a membership with the intent of canceling it once the current sale is over. Believe me, a membership more than pays for itself over the year if you do any sort of DVD/media buying at all.

Just got The Friends of Eddie Coyle today. This completes receipt of all titles in my three orders.
Trying to resist the temptation to go to the well one more time. Don't know if I will be successful or not.
Well, I completely failed to resist. I knew I was doomed when I saw Six Moral Tales come back in stock on line; I had that one on my wish list.
Having used the AAA discount and 15% off one item coupon twice, I was unable to get more mileage out of that one so I went with the Visa link for 5% off and stacked that with the current 15% off coupon that they have.
Got Six Moral Tales for $40 plus tax, Kagemusha for $16.14 plus tax, and That Obscure Object of Desire for $12.10 plus tax. Placed the order for each item on a separate B&N account and got free expedited shipping on all.
I am officially done with the sale now (really, I am). Went about $75 over my budget, but I don't know when deals like these may come around again. I'm hugely satisfied to get ten Criterion titles, including seven multi-disc sets, for a shade under $200.00. With 22 discs total in all my titles combined, it works out to a per-disc average of around $9.
Never thought I'd get Criterions for this. Just amazing.

Resist the urge. If it gets too tempting give your sponsor a call. If that doesn't work, head straight to meeting or pm one of us. We'll guide you through it.
You joke, but I'm beginning to think that I really do have a problem. I bought 23 more films today, bringing me to over 100 total for this sale.
But in a small sliver of hope that I'm done, my Discover card expires today, and I can't find the envelope with the new card they mailed me months ago. Without the extra 5% cashback, my OCD won't let me buy anymore, I hope.

Slightly off topic, but every now and then someone mentions the idea of having a Criterion Challenge. I'm not committing to volunteer to start one, but August and September are months without DVDTalk Challenges (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/557368-official-dvdtalk-challenges-compendium.html), and I'm wondering how much interest there is out here.
I know I should start a separate thread, but just testing the waters quickly before I start to think about it too seriously.
