Wanted to thank everyone who responded to my earlier question
about how B&N does on their packaging/shipping of DVD's and how
UPS is compared to regular mail. Info very much appreciated.
One more question for those who have info on the art house essentials.
I went with this version of Rashomon as one of my selections. Am I giving
up much or even anything going with the lower priced art house essential.
Also do I get the same video/audio quality? Appreciate any thoughts and
insights. Thanks once again.

The Bing 10% referral credit for B & N seems more "hit and miss" rather than whether a 15% coupon was used on the order. Prior to the conversion of MSN Live to Bing, there were problems, then after Bing started, there were no problems getting the credit and now, July, it has started again. MSN blames B & N and B & N says complaints have to directed to the referrer, here MSN. Further, it appears B & N only gives the credit when the order is charged and shipped, unlike DeepDiscount.
Has any one else, who had this experience, come to the same conclusion?

I gotta say, I prefer The Naked City, but all of the Dassin films that are on Criterion are all so incredible!
The cinematography in Naked City is superb, but the acting ranges from the bland (Howard Duff), to the insufferably hammy (Barry Fitzgerald), and the story itself isn't particularly interesting.

I loved the B1G1 deal DD had on Criterions like last October.
If they do that again, that would be absolutely amazing, does anyone know the chance it can happen again because also the October 09 Criterion releases are amazing
Debating whether or not I should just buy 1 for now.

No, keep it - it's still a good movie, it just suffers greatly in comparison to Brute Force, which is a really tough, two-fisted flick. Naked City is a pretty straightforward police procedural (possibly the first), but the on-location camerawork is wonderful and it does build to a exciting climax.
NoirFan, how is the Monsters & Madmen set? I'm gonna do one more round of purchases.
If you're a fan of 50's B-movie fare, then the set is worth ordering. All four films are above average genre pics, though certainly not masterpieces by any stretch. I wouldn't pay top dollar for the box, though for 30 bucks or whatever it comes out to during the sale I say go for it. They're a lot of fun.

While I loved the DD B1G1 sale, I'll note (in case it hasn't already been said) that the savings there resulted from having to buy two with the same listed prices, whereas a customer who only wants one Criterion (or can't match up items with different list prices) can pick & choose more selectively.
That does sound familiar.
With DD's B1G1, you had to order an even number of titles. And you had to group your orders by price to maximize the effectiveness.

If I were you, I wouldn't debate. You can't predict the future, and this deal is like 90-99% as good as the one from DD was last year, and that one may have been a once-in-a-lifetime sale. We're already talking Criterions, where people are willing to pay more for the quality of them, so is $1 or $2 REALLY that big of a deal?

Last week when I hit up my local B&N, only a handful of titles were tagged 50% off. Went back before work today to find that all but maybe 2 were tagged 50%.
Literally, my first purchase at B&N (online or B&M) in maybe 5-6 years.
Bought:
The Vanishing: $15.00
Seventh Seal (Blu-Ray): $20.00
Vampyr: $20.00
Brazil (3 Disc SE): $30.00
Do The Right Thing (2-Disc SE): $20.00
M: $20.00
If they are still there when I go back this weekend with my girlfriend, I might pick up 8 1/2, Beauty and The Beast and a couple others.

I apologize for this question, in case the answer seems too obvious. But, I've been searching and scouring the internet, and I can't find a definitive answer. I want to order the 3-disc Brazil. However, I want to confirm if the 1st disc is the anamorphic re-release. Everyone just says "remastered," but I can't figure out if the 1st release was "remastered," too, therefore making that word kind of useless. And some reviews (like the one here at DVDTalk) are of the more recent 1-disc release, so they don't say that or don't know if the 3-disc version actually does contain the anamorphic re-release of the director's version. It seems like a pretty good deal in this sale, and I don't want to miss out on it, but I also don't want to order the 3-disc only to find out it contains the original non-anamorphic release.

I already showed the math explaining how that isn't true. Care to share your info showing where I went wrong? If there's a better way to work the system, I'd certainly like to know about it.
And in addition to what I outlined before, I didn't even factor in a pro-rated cost of the B&N membership that should be shared by all items purchased during the year. Of course the value of that would be minimal for some and significant for others.

Hello fellow math nerd! :)
You are not wrong, but under certain circumstances it actually is possible to get a better deal. As you have noted, with the BN sale you don't need to pair up equal MSRP titles. Also, not all titles were part of the B1G1 sale. I recall not being able to get certain titles, like The Bad Sleep Well, and possibly some Eclipse sets.
I think the secret weapon is the codes C8U7B7C and M3A3M4P. Also, you need to buy a CD. I collect CDs, so I am happy to do so, but I know some people aren't into physical media for music anymore.
Anyway, my calculation. I don't remember the exact prices during the B1G1 sale, so I'll use your calculation of $14.90 for a $40 MSRP Criterion. If you extrapolate, you get $11.18 for a $30 MSRP title, and $22.35 for a $60 MSRP title, just as examples.
Here is one of my numerous orders from the BN sale:
Rossellini's Histories ($60 MSRP)
White Dog ($30 MSRP)
The Fire Within ($30 MSRP)
Dinosaur Jr.'s "Farm" deluxe 2-disc ($15 MSRP)
At the DD B1G1 prices, this would have cost me $44.71 plus the cost of the CD.
I paid a total of $47.76 after: (1) BN 10% off, (2) 6% tax (mine was actually higher but I calculated based on 6% so it would be apples to apples, (3) $15 off with coupon code listed above, (4) 10% Discover cashback.
Thus, if the CD I purchased is worth $3.05 to me, then I've broken even with the DD B1G1 prices. As it happens, it's worth more to me, so I in fact got a better deal. :)
Definitely YMMV (depending on what you want to buy), but I don't think either of us is wrong. I mostly wanted to point out the awesomeness of the $15 off stackable coupon codes.
EDIT: And the BN membership can be canceled within 30 days. :)

To clarify that's a 20% online coupon and not a 25% coupon. It would be a close call using it on Repulsion since the coupon expires around the time it is released. It's only valid for about 5 days.
Also this sale is even better in store than online! I was able to get two $19.99 Criterion titles today at my local B&N store for $27 minus another 5% using my B&N Mastercard. That's the one. Since it says each customer it should work without a membership, but you have to go through one of the bookstore links posted on the first page of the B&N coupon thread. I don't believe it will work through web sites like Bing.com, or the regular B&N portal. We had a similar coupon like it a few months ago with the same restrictions.

So that would get you to 62% off list price (.50*.80*.95 = .38) + tax. I've ignored S&H since the Visa link makes it free. I'm in CA so tax is 9.25% making it about 58.5% off list. Not terrible I guess. It would be much nicer if I could just place one big order instead of splitting them up with because the coupon is per item.

That looks about right for the 5% Visa discount along with the 20% coupon. You can go through either military.com or Visa to get free shipping on all orders. I assume the coupon may work through AAA where you can get a 10% discount. Yikes you're paying even higher sales tax then I am in CA!
I agree it would be nice to place one large order but you have to take what B&N gives you. You have to play the game by their rules to maximize the discounts.

The coupon is valid for only a single item, and not the entire purchase. If you ordered another movie that is not a pre-order it should be fine to combine Repulsion with it. The coupon would apply the discount to the other DVD that qualifies.

Clearing cookies and changing browsers will not solve anything since the coupon is working as intended. The problem is that you're not meeting the coupon requirements with those titles. To get $5 off you need to purchase a DVD $20 or more before a members discount, or your order total must be at least $50 or more. Chungking Express is $19.99 and Touchez Pas au Grisbi is $14.99. Neither reach the $20/$50 requirement. Actually if you can find another DVD a little over $20 combined with your other two titles it would meet both requirements, and the coupon would deduct $10 off.

There are some quirky things that were going on a few days ago when I was putting in an order, so this may be along the same lines. If I moved items from my wishlist to my cart, it would not allow me to get free expedited shipping even though both items were eligible. I cleared the cart, added them manually and it worked...I still have no idea why.
I don't think it would hurt to contact customer service as long as you have tried everything else first. Usually, I will play with the coupons for a while to see what happens in different situations. It doesn't always seem to be an exact science.

so should I assume the DVDs that Barnes and Nobles have dropped from the sale are going OOP ? what is the likelyhood that Criterion would let DD have a sale this "deep" (heh) after B&N beat them to it? I don't know if the manufacturer has any say..

Not necessarily. Seems like some (all?) of the vanished titles are Blu-rays. As far as I know, the CC aren't pulling any of their Blu-rays from circulation yet. Perhaps once inventory sells out, they pull them from the sale until they get more stock (which could be after the sale ends, who knows).
On the SD front, I do believe Contempt and Ran recently went OOP. Anyone who wants them should get them soon. (I just ordered Ran and have Contempt already...it's an excellent DVD, for anyone on the fence).
Ive been thinking about getting the following. Can someone tell me if they're worth the price.
F For Fake
Do the Right Thing
In the Realm of the Senses
Simon of The Desert
I'm not sure what you mean by "worth the price" (movie content? transfer quality? etc.), but I'd be hesitant to recommend either the Oshima or Buñuel as totally blind-buys. If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest you at least read up on those two titles before ordering, to ensure you'll find them suitable.

FYI, for the titles that are listed as "not available", I called the Barnes and Noble customer service line a few days ago. It just means that they are currently out of stock and have disabled the item on their website because they have a policy of not doing backorders on sale items. She said that the discs will become available again when they receive inventory.
You just have to hope that inventory arrives before the sale ends...

I didn't like In The Realm of the Senses at all, beautiful cinematography, but not something I would ever watch again, & I love Japanese cinema. Looking at your collection, I would highly recommend High Low, Friends of Eddie Coyle, or some Melville, you can't go wrong with any of his crime films.

If it helps anyone, I have a tentative date of 8/5 on The Seventh Seal BD. As I've already stated on here, I must have ordered at a weird time because it said, ships within 24 hours, then I got a "ready to ship" notice, and then it said August 5th.
So, I'm guessing they are getting a shipment in around that date. In other words, like me for "Marienbad" BD, you might as well order from DD if you really want to get it.

I love Do The Right Thing, but will be getting the recent bluray (non-Criterion) release.
Here's a review comparing the two: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews46/do_the_right_thing_blu-ray.htm
Sounds like a review from a Blu-ray-whore. Sorry, I can't accept the color change done on that movie in the new release. The red filter used on it was crucial, in my opinion. I remember seeing that movie in the theater, and it *felt* hot just looking at it. Now there are clear blue skies. Great, a little more detail and stronger boombox sounds, but let's change the subtle visual impact of the entire movie. Stupid decision.

I'm exactly the opposite. I thought F For Fake was incredibly clever. It's one of my favorites, and I still think about it a lot and recommend it to friends who are interested in film. Do The Right Thing I thought was obvious and more than a little annoying. Granted, I first saw it years after it came out.

The UPS driver must of threw my second order at my front door. :-(
3 out of 8 were damage.
1st blu-ray case looks like someone drop it hard(the corner is busted out real bad)
2nd has crack case and tear on the art work at the same spot.over 1"
3rd was a floater(has alot of straches)
If it was only one damage product I could live with it.But I want my blu-ray Criterions in good shape.
Also I think the damage was done before shipping,as the shipping box does look in good shape.
And my first order from them was in great shape.
I will post again, and let everyone know that cares, how their return policy worked out for me.
It would be great if I could exchange these at one of their B&M stores.

I am getting in way deep this month. Finally attempting to polish of the ol' want list with the DD sale, so this Criterion offer made for a bit of a conflict. But I really didn't want to regret passing on the Brazil 3-disc at that price. Even IF Deep Discount have another B1G1 Criterion sale this year, there is no other title I could pair it with that would make for a viable deal.
After applying the 20% off coupon that just started working, the free shipping offer got nixed. I added 'A Simple Plan' for $3.99 to qualify - which I was considering getting during the DD sale, so this was even cheaper.

Ran is OOP, so B&N won't be restocking it. If you find a copy anywhere, jump on it! It's an essential film that everyone (IMO) should own.
I can't recommend F is for Fake because even as a fan of Orson Welles I found that movie unwatchable. Do the Right Thing is one of Spike Lee's better films, though still flawed, but as has been said you'd be better off buying the new Universal 2-disc. In the Realm of The Senses and Simon of the Desert you should rent first.

To learn more about Ozu's work, you can watch clips from his films on YouTube and this site (http://www.a2pcinema.com/ozu-san/films.htm) gives a very good overview of each of his films. The Late Ozu box or the Silent Ozu box are both well worth the purchase at these prices.

Since several other people here ordered Made in U.S.A., I thought I would mention this:
It's Darwyn Cooke's graphic novel adaptation of Richard Stark's Parker. The book just came out today, and it looks great. Made in U.S.A. was Godard's adaptation of a Parker book, but he didn't bother to secure the rights, which is why it was seldom seen in the U.S. (Stark/Westlake died in 2008). Godard also changed the gender of the main character and a whole bunch of other things, but never mind. Cooke (the creator of Justice League: The New Frontier) plans on releasing three more Parker graphic novels.

BUT, I've noticed plenty of posts in here stating people are not getting the Bing discount. :( Is this because they used coupons on the order and Bing doesn't work with coupons? Or is the Bing discount flat-out being denied across the board with this sale, even for those who don't use any B&N coupons? Any help appreciated!

Doinel isn't as sympathetic when he grows up to become a womanizer with model-type good looks, and towards the end the franchise shamelessly exploits is own history and also morphs into something of a bad imitation of Scenes from a Marriage.... although at this price you could easily resell if you so desired.

If they are not oop B&N most likely will get them back in stock again. Last Year at Marienbad blu-ray has been out of stock twice and within a day or two B&N had more copies available. Picked up Criterions of:

Acquiring those those two films has been a dilemma for me. Both are in the public domain -- free for download, or on those cheap dollar store DVDs -- but the Criterion restorations are supposed to be vastly better in terms of quality. No way I could ever justify $40 for a single "free" film, but (with a 20% coupon) I can definitely do $34 for both. Less if my 6% Fatwallet goes through as well.

That is good to know. Since sales like this on Criterions are relatively rare, I'll bet that B&N was caught somewhat off guard by the demand, but are working to replenish their stock as fast as they can.
The only criticism I have is that OOS items are not even searchable in their database, so you can't add them to your wish list.
You can get around the search problem by using Google to find OOS items at B&N, and then you can easily add them to your wishlist that way.

I accidently placed an order for Battle of Algiers while trying to work out a coupon system.. . Outrageous !!!!!!!! On the other hand it's not like I just bought it for full price.. or that I don't want it. Just spending too much.
This is one of my favorite titles. So many extra features, which are as pertinent now as ever. Urban terrorism, citizen uprisings, and ultimately the futility of brute retaliatory force...at least watch this if you don't buy it.

First purchase at my local B&N:
For All Mankind (Blu)
Classe Tous Risques
Salo
Total $43
Second purchase online:
Repulsion (Blu)
The Seventh Seal (Blu)
Le Doulos
Le Deuxième Souffle
Dodes'ka-Den
The Vanishing
Total $94
After membership discount, coupons, taxes, and shipping, it worked out to be $137 total or $15.22 per Criterion.
Are items that are going out of stock, coming back in?
I noticed someone mentioned Last Year at Marienbad.
Is there any hope for Six Moral Tales to come back in?
You should keep checking. The Seventh Seal (Blu), Le Doulos, and The Vanishing were all oos and are now available again.

I have been lucky in that I have been able to use the 20% off coupon 8 times now.
With Bing however, I am hit or miss...I seem to get cashback with random orders now...there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to this. The good thing is I got the cashback ($3.60) on my most expensive order, the Antoine Doinel Boxset.
FYI: B & N have a 50% off sale on hundreds of DVDs (mostly Artisan), so I have placed some orders for a Criterion at 20% off and a less expensive film and I get the free shipping. ie: pre-ordered Ulysseus ($6.74) along with The Seventh Seal Blu-Ray ($14.39).

It is irritating that some titles are on sale but not on the list. The 2 disc set of Grey Gardens is on sale, but you have to enter the UPC to get to it, searching either the title or directors doesn't get it, nor is it in the list. Also, Thieves Highway isn't on the list, and wasn't on sale at first, but I checked again today, and it is now.

Good tip, thanks! I am looking through the sale titles now. I'll probably get Alfred Hitchcock - 3 Disc Collector's Edition: The Early Years of the Master of Suspense. It's a 3-disc set with 5 of his early films. MSRP is $24.99, so $11.49 after member discount and before cashback.

I couldn't resist... I ordered the Early Bergman set along with Better Luck Tomorrow (a favorite of mine, also on sale for the Paramount titles).
Now, if there are indeed two 20% off coupons all I have left to really consider are the Delirious Fiction of William Klein (a total blind buy, but the reviews have me interested), Silent Ozu, or Carlos Saura's Flamenco Trilogy (another total blind buy). Actually, I suppose if I place one more order it would be good to get two of them.
I know no one really knows my taste, so this is not going to determine what I order, but I'm curious to know what anyone thinks is the best bargain out of those sets.

I don't think so. What $5 stackable coupons?
Check out LASERMOVIES' B&N coupon thread on the first page of the Bargains forum for details. Are you a B&N member?
Basically, the coupon takes:
$5 off a DVD $20 or higher
$5 off a CD $10 or higher
$5 off a $50 order
So if you order $50 worth of stuff, including a DVD $20 or higher and a CD $10 or higher, you get $15 off your total order.
A good combination is:
$45 MSRP Criterion (like William Klein or Carlos Saura)
1 $40 MSRP Criterion
1 $30 MSRP Criterion
1 $15 MSRP CD
Total comes to under $50 shipped after all discounts, so I think of it as around $17, $15, $11, and $5 respectively.

You only need to input the code once, and it will automatically stack the discounts as you put eligible items in your cart and when you hit the $50 milestone.
The code should not force you to renew your membership.

Walkabout is a great movie, one of my favorites, but you should be aware (if you're not already) that the Criterion is not anamorphic and they're supposedly working on an anamorphic reissue and a Blu-ray. (This was announced well over a year ago, but it's still not on their release schedule). The current DVD is so cheap with the discount though, that you might consider it anyway, since the CC can be unpredictable in terms of how long it takes to get things out. The Roeg/Agutter commentary is a pretty interesting listen too (and I don't generally listen to too many commentaries).
I have the SD version four-disc Criterion boxed set of Last Emperor. Storaro wanted the aspect ratio altered from the original scope to 2.0:1 for the Criterion, the only detriment to an otherwise really fine release.
Of the others on your list, I'd suggest Veronique if you like Kieslowski. I just got it from this sale and it's a beautiful package and jam-packed with extras.

So is there any way to use more than one renewal coupon?
I'm a former member, figure I'll renew and grab a few Criterions, but want to maximize my coupon usage.
And if I read everything right, the AAA or military links won't help if I'm a member and spend $25+, so I might as well log in thru Bing in the off chance that it works. Right?

The Barnes & Noble by my work has been selling a lot Criterion DVDs. Their Criterion shelf used to have all the titles displayed spine out; now there are a lot of face outs and box sets have been added to the display to fill space. I stopped by there today to pick up Sword of Doom and possibly Hiroshima Mon Amour, but both were gone. On the other hand, their Blu-ray discs appear to not be moving at all, even at 50% off.

Unless you absolutely want the longer cut, go for the blu-ray. You get better image quality, and the theatrical cut is still "director approved" ;).
I thought the blu-ray was really impressive when I watched it a while ago. Check out the comparison at dvdbeaver.com if you haven't already (not allowed to post the link as I have too few posts).

It may not matter to you at all, but I think it makes a big difference, as the edges of the frame are missing, and the image is zoomed in. I love the film, but I'm sticking with my old R3 DVD until they correct this. :scratch2:

"FIND & RESERVE AN IN-STORE COPY"
"Enter a zip code"
Just type in your zip code, and you'll see an ever-widening selection of stores by distance from your location, along with the item's availability. You can just check & see, or reserve & hold.

I've spent about $650 on this sale so far. :gah:
I hear ya. It's hard to know when to stop sometimes. The siren call of B&N's site keeps luring me back to the computer.
I only spent about $120, but that was all the cash I got for Father's Day. I didn't plan on spending it all on Criterions, but that's the way the cookie crumbles. Luckily, I still have some gift cards that I will spend elsewhere.
Anyway, my second order (placed Tuesday) just arrived, with Ran and Sisters in it, and my third (and, I pray, last) order is in and scheduled to ship on Monday. For the previous two I used AAA 10% discount stacked with the 15% AAA coupon (on two separate accounts, since 15% can only be used once per account).
For this order, I used AAA 10% again, stacked with the 20% general use coupon. (I am not a B&N member). I took the plunge and finally ordered Seven Samurai, as well as Friends of Eddie Coyle; SS worked out to $17.99 plus tax with the two coupons applied.
Final haul:
The Double Life of Veronique
My Dinner with Andre
Videodrome
Ran
Sisters
The Friends of Eddie Coyle
Seven Samurai
One triple-disc, four doubles, and two singles for about $121 delivered, including tax (about $17/title).
I can live with that.

in total from this sale I've got the following...
F for Fake
In the Realm of the Senses
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Do the Right Thing
The Night Porter
Empire of Passion
Fires of the Plain
The Last Wave
Simon of the Desert
Days of Heaven
All but Days of Heaven were blind buys. I really hope I like these thought. With Criterions it can be really hit or miss sometimes...

Last Emperor [Blu-Ray] $15.93

As a non-member i'm pretty happy with these prices. I wish Bottle Rocket and Wages of Fear were also available to order.

The Aki Karuismaki Proleteriat Trilogy could also qualify for this one. Has anyone seen this set? I'm thinking of doing a blind buy on it.
Kaurismaki's style isn't for everyone. His films are very minimalist, with lots of dry, deadpan humor. If you like Jarmusch, Kaurismaki is a safe bet.

Stupid question: does this 50% off include Criterion pre-orders? I'd love to get Repulsion for twenty bucks if I could.
I ordered Repulsion at my nearby store, and it showed as $20.00. So it should work on pre-orders in store. Granted the movie has to come out during the sale.

I've placed three orders during the sale.
Order 1
Postwar Kurosawa
Alexander Korda's Private Lives
Magnificent Obsession
Order 2
All That Heaven Allows
Travels with Hiroshi Shimizu
Early Bergman
Order 3
Rossellini's History Films - Renaissance and Enlightenment
The Taking of Power by Louis XIV
Silent Ozu - Three Family Comedies
And with the exception of reserving a copy of Nights of Cabiria at my local B&N, I believe I'm done for now.
Between this sale, DD's and DVD Planet's 25% off sale, and the Warner blowout at Big Lots, the impossible has happened.
The very idea of DVDs is starting to nauseate me.... :(

Preordered Repulsion using the 15% off coupon for 15.29 net. I'm thinking of making one "last" order between John Cassavetes: Films or Adventures of Antoine Doinel. Which do you think should I pick?

Since "Last Year at Marienbad" BD came back into the mix, I also picked that up along with "Umberto D." I'm done with B&N for a while now. I will also have a nice little unwatched movie pile to tackle.
The boxes that I already received were in good condition except one that looked like someone threw the side on the ground and then jumped on it. There was so much bubble wrap inside that there was zero damage to the discs though. With 5 different orders, I've only had that one box in bad shape.

hey everybody, double check your bank statement. I placed two orders for SCIENCE IS FICTION and on both of those orders I was overcharged about $3.50. I could not match up the order with the charge in my account , so I called customer service and they found the overcharges immediately and are crediting me back. I don't know if this only happened with this title or if it's just a coincidence or what.. I placed 14 orders (!!) so I feel pretty lucky I found these in all of those transactions.

I just can't get enough of this sale, stopped by a store this morning & picked up 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her for $9.01 after discounts! That you can get a brand new Criterion for $9 freakin' dollars is just amazing.
I'm to the point where I still want to buy more, but I've literally got every criterion I want now, so I'm just looking for blind buys that I may like.
I want to get at least one box set, I'm on the fence about either the Cassavetes set or Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales , right now I'm leaning towards the Rohmer set, both would be blind buys. Any have or seen both? Any thoughts?

I've noticed that the "$5 of $50 purchase" coupon takes a random amount off of all the titles in your transaction.
Edit to add: Discount adding up to $5 I presume, but didn't do the math last night.
Also, this sale is going to ruin my cruise plans. Or seriously hurt my Discover card at least.

Hmm, random? When I used it, it took a pro-rated percentage of $5 off. So for example, if my order contained two $20 items and a $10 item, it would take $2, $2, and $1 off, respectively. Of course, the actually prices were not round numbers, so the amounts taken off weren't either.
Of course, it is entirely possible that at other stores or with different clerks, the coupon could work differently or be misapplied.

I wasn't using the technical definition of "random" perhaps. We're saying the same thing. Depending on the price of the items you buy and how many items you buy, the coupon will take an amount off each item.

50% off sale, + 10% member discount + $5 off DVD purchase of $20 or more coupon. The coupon says it's $5 off of the listed price before discount or coupon. It doesn't matter than your final total may be under $20, the $5 off is from the list price of the DVD.
Here is proof, hopefully you can read it, total is up top. $30 Criterions are $8.50 w/ this sale, you can't beat that.

And here we have one of the main reasons why the DD/DVDP threads are moving sluggishly compared to past years. Everybody is spending their money at B&N and/or Big Lots.
$9.01 w/tax for a new Criterion is absolutely mind-blowing.

Excellent, thank you. By the way, I wasn't suggesting that I didn't believe you; I figured you must have gotten them to apply the $5 coupon, but didn't think it would work for a DVD with a sub-$20 sale price. I will try it this weekend, thanks!

Dang. Awesome deal. Can you only do that by picking up one title at a time or is there no limit? I have no B&N near me that sells Criterion's so I've been ordering what I want online. I still need a few though (including those newly released Godard films). Man, I wish those B&N's near me sold Criterion's right now.

You can print as many coupons as you'd like I suppose. You can only use one coupon, per DVD & they have to be in seperate orders, so if you are buying multiple DVDs you will likely piss the employee off. I've used this coupon 3 times, at 3 different B & Ns, twice I had no problem, once the clerk gave me a hard time, saying the order had to be over $20, but I just shows her the fine print, it clearly says, "$5 off the Barnes & Noble list price of the DVD".
That sucks that your B & N's don't sell Criterions, I have 3 B & Ns near me & their sections are huge.
But now the more important question :D Can anyone answer my questions I posted way above. Cassevetes box set or Rohmer box set? Which would you recommend?

Both are acquired tastes to a certain degree, so it's a YMMV situation. As for me, I would find life without my Six Moral Tales set simply unbearable. For some, this box is the crown jewel of the Criterion line.

I absolutely adore Six Moral Tales and would consider it a must own. I've seen all of the films before (on VHS!) and kept putting off buying the set but could no longer resist with this sale. Even at MSRP I would consider this set a good buy, but to get it for what B&N has it for is practically a steal. I just received my set yesterday and it is perfect in almost every way (alas, no BD) and I'm sorry I waited so long to get it. Just my two cents, FWIW. Whatever you do, I'm sure either set will be well worth the money. I say go for the Rohmer.

I hit the stores today and managed to get 7 more Criterions with a stack of $5 coupons. Six of them for $13 each and one for $8.50. I'm at about the point I have nothing else to buy. I like to get Repulsion blu-ray if I can find it in a store next week but the stores in my area don't seem to have any blu-ray Criterions.

It's nice to think about. I would guess that having to license all these movies isn't cheap though.
I will confess my first thought after hearing about the sale was not whether they might lower their MSRP but whether this could become an annual event, even if not via the same retailer each year. Last year they did B1G1 at DD, now 50% off list at B&N.
If this type of sale could happen regularly I'd look forward to it much more than the DD sale, seriously. Didn't have much to buy from them this time out; just ordered two new releases.
But it's so rare to get Criterion titles this cheaply that I'd save up a want list all year in anticipation.
Sorry...just dreaming.

It varies depending on the store, but most seem to do it in a single transaction for me. One store claimed they couldn't and had to do 3 separate transactions. I hit three different stores today since I had to drive about 50 miles to pick up a reserved copy of Nights of Cabiria. On the way home I stopped at 2 other stores since I was going right past them. I used the two different $5 off $20 coupons without any problems.

Lasermovies, B&N and Criterion ought to make you a permanent employee since you are driving most of their sales.
I had a question: 2 of 20% coupons for the non-members expire on July 27. Will the new coupons emerge on July 28 for 20% or nobody can be sure of that?
