Hello all,
Please excuse my ignorance when it comes to home theater. However, a friend of mine asked me to recommend a place where I might find relatively inexpensive equipment. More specifically, he is looking for transducers (?) which he describes as "things placed inside the seating that enhance the sound through vibration." No Joke. So I start looking around on the net and find NO such reference to this kind of equipment. I personally thought transducers referred to speakers. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

The items that you are interested in are called "tactile transducers" These are motor structures that are fed an audio (subwoofer) signal just like a typical audio speaker but instead of moving a cone, these transducers move a weight inside the motor structure which creates vibrations. These vibrations are interpreted by the listener as extremely low bass. These are usually screwed down to the listener(s) seat(s) so that they will shake. These are very cool products for home theater and provide the "big bass shakes" without the "too loud volume". A company called Aura makes two different models that they call "Bass Shakers". These were originally created for the car audio market but have found their way into home theater applications. They have a set they sell specifically for home theater that includes two of their 20 watt entry level bass shakers plus an amplifier to drive them. Don't worry about the unimpressive 20 watt rating, these do not need as much power to shake things up as a typical subwoofer does. (it's moving a weight, not a cone that has to move large amounts of air). Check out http://www.aurasystems.com

I used to own 4-Bass Shaker Pros which I had installed under my couch powered by a Yamaha RX-V590 receiver.I was impressed by them for awhile until I decided I needed an upgrade.I then bought 2-Clark Synthesis 229`s powered by an outboard Audiosource AMP1.There was a big difference in quality. The Clark units have a much smoother tactile feel and have a much higher power handling capability.
The Clark 229`s go for $299.00 each plus I spent $179.99 for the amp, very cheap at www.spidergear.com.I (http://www.spidergear.com.I) would try either www.smarthome.com (http://www.smarthome.com) for the Aura`s and Clark`s.Or go to ebay or Yahoo auction sites because they always seem to have either of the Aura`s real cheap. You must keep in mind that you will need an outboard amp.or receiver to power them.
Keep in mind also if you put them under a couch,to get a piece of plywood about 1/2 inch thick by 7 or 8 inches wide by 7 foot long(estimate on width and length). And screw them securly on the ends.Do not get 3/4 or 1 inch thick plywood because it will not resonate as well.

ok..i'm gonna sound like a retard but how exactly do you hook these up?? say that i'm gonna use a 2 - 25wamps to power a couple of aura shakers?

now i have a sony dd/sts receiver with a powered sub already hooked up...how would i wire in the shakers/amps? please dumb it down for me :p thanks!

I'm going to assume your receiver has only one sub output, which is already connected to your sub. The easiest way would be to simply get an rca y-connector (male - 2 female) that will split your single sub output into two. Run one output to the sub, the other to the input of the amp you are going to use to power the shakers. I'm also going to assume that you are using a stereo amp to power the shakers. Since it is only going to be receiving a mono signal, run the amp in mono (if possible) and wire the shakers in parallel (if your amp is rated to handle it). Alternatively, you could get ANOTHER y connector (female - 2 male) and use it to send the mono low frequency channel to both channels of your amp.

thanks...that answered a few questions..now here is another one...

i went to the store tonight and they ahd a kit with two shakers and two amps...to install that could i just run a Y out of the 2nd sub output on my receiver, plug the two amps into the Y and then run one shaker from each amp?
