DeepDiscount.com's semi-annual 25% off DVD and Blu-ray sale starts July 17 and runs until August 2, 2009. The orange note I got with my order today from DeepDiscount gives the word HOTSTUFF as one promo code.

Seems like a lot of people will be ordering BSG: The Complete Series. I expect the first batch they receive to sell out pretty quickly.

Other stuff coming out during the sale:

Repulsion (The Criterion Collection)
Pushing Daisies season 2
Torchwood season 2 [Blu-ray]

I still have my order showing processing from when i tried to make my order earlier this month when there was an apperant glitch or what have you. Thanks! You have to sign up for a Bing cashback account. If you have an MSN Live accoount (Hotmail, Xbox, etc.) you use that. Go to http://www.bing.com/shopping.

Click on cashback account on the left. Sign up for the account (you can just use a current email address, it doesn't have to be MSN affiliated).

Then read "How Cashback Works": http://www.bing.com/shopping/pages/howtouse.aspx?FORM=R5FD2

Hope that helps.

Some people believe the only price increases that happen when this sale comes up are titles that go off of a previous sale.

That's only partially true however, as many titles of mine which were not part of any other sale over the past few years have gone up quite substantially either right before the 20/25% off sale started, or while it was going on.

I'm pretty sure they will, but their prices have shot up since the last sale (ie:Criterions are $30 as compared to $24 last year). Almost everything I want is cheaper at DDD, but I will have to buy some from DVDPlanet as I still have some credit there.

I'm always disappointed when coupons can only be run once. If you are going to allow someone to have 25% off of 60 items in their shopping cart then why not 4 smaller orders, etc. (Unless they really get hammered on the free shipping, and this is a way to cut down on that). Either way, I am much more prone to make a bunch of orders over the space of the promotion, than just one large order.

theguyoverthere

There's multiple coupon codes that are out there each time they've held a sale in the past. From the top of my head there's been "USATODAY", "DVDTALK", "ESPN", etc... I wouldn't worry about having to make just one overly large order.

Wonder if "LATIMES" will be a valid code, since the debacle over this one earlier in the month?

I still have my order that I used that code for showing up as "processing," so I imagine that, when the sale goes live, it might ship. Or maybe it's cancelled. Who knows? A buddy told me that he thought the sale was live, so I made an order, then the fallout occurred. No big deal to me, either way, as I'll probably make 2-3 orders before it's all said and done.

I think the general tendency is that people are much more likely to report price increases than decreases, reinforcing conspiracy theories about DD intentionally raising prices across the board before the big sale. So all the decreases that go unreported aren't taken into account (and tend to get ignored even if they are reported ;)).

In threads that have systematically tracked both price increases and price decreases prior to previous DD sales, no consistent pattern of increases emerged, other than normal price fluctuations and other sales ending.

25% off of that price is $28 and change. that doesn't suck at all. I knew it was part of some sale or another...was just curious if anyone knew it's more common regular price. looks like it will be an even better deal in two weeks

It amuses me to no end that people expect them to keep sale prices during their big across the board sale. The whining about it is just annoying. I know what you mean. Checking the standard search engines the current best price from the major vendors is BB and when you take into account shipping and tax they are back up around the $37 price range. So at $30 DD was already below the other by about 20% but some feel cheated if that can't get another 25% off on top of that.

I also run searches to compare prices again during the sale and as long as I feel like I am getting a bargain during the DD sale I don't really care if it only works out to be 15% off from the best other price in the end. A good deal is a good deal regardless of the percentage difference to me.

GaryO

At this point, being mostly a vintage TV on DVD collector, I know that with a little patience and a sale here and there (either the upcoming DD sale or any of the many others that occur during the year) I can get what I want for 50% off the MSRP. And in these difficult economic times that's my new holdout price - 50% off. I won't budge for less of a discount, over all, than that. If the prices on the shows I have in my DD wishlist don't go up any between now and the sale, then with a 25% coupon I'll get that half off price point on all the items I want. If for some reason some of the prices go up, I'll just pass on those items and bide my time. But I see no reason for anyone to complain. Almost every release comes down to at least 50% off within 3 to 6 months of release. Just takes a little patience.

Don't get me wrong - I love DD as much as the next person, and my comment was not a rant, I just like to save as much as possible.

The Boetticher set is steep anywhere else - up to the $40 range someplaces. I'll be getting it at DD opening sale day. The seven or so other titles I'll get are holding at price or have gone down anyway. Yaneedtachillbro.

They will still price match, but they aren't going to match the price and then take off an additional 25% when someone else has it on sale at the same time. It just so happens Amazon and Walmart have good prices on that set right now. Generally, I would say about 55% off list is about the best you can expect. That being about 30% off list as their standard discount and another 25% for the sale.

Star Trek the Motion Picture Collection up to $90.30. That's hilarious. Will they price match Amazon during the sale? Surely they don't count the coupon discount toward the match.

I'm glad I bit the last time Best Buy had it at $65. My plan was to return my DD copy to BB, but since the price has gone up so much I'm just happy I picked it up at BB when I did and didn't wait for the DD sale. ;)

at $90.30, with 25% off the total would be $67.73.
Depending on what you paid in sales tax (here it's almost 9%), DD would still come out cheaper than snagging it on sale at BB.
I picked it up there too because I had a Rewards Zone coupon for $15, so I got it for just under $55.

Speaking of price raises, I don't expect the Battlestar Galactica Bd set to stay at its current price of $222.xx. However, they can still raise it to a whopping $280 and with the 25% off, you would STILL save $10 more than the current pre-order price.
I hope they don't (raise it too much), but I'm expecting to hear a lot of people bitch to high heaven when they do...even though they would likely still come out ahead.
If I can get it for under $200, I'll be a real happy camper. Not expecting 50% off (which would be $175) but anything between that and $200 I would consider an great bargain- especially when you price out the per season cost.

Anyone else prefer it when there was no "official announcement" and it just all the sudden started one day? It was exciting. Now knowing about it (weeks) ahead of time just kind of takes some of the luster/fun out of it IMHO.

I'm with you. The announcement has taken some of the pizzaz out of the event. Maybe they were being bombarded with inquiries and decided to give us our lolipop and shut us up. :)

Are you suggesting that Amazon's price is a sale price? I can't find any sale notice in Amazon's listing (and it's been at that same price since it began shipping, to the best of my recollection). I just find it hard to believe they would apply an optional coupon's value to the price match, because surely not all of their customers know of the coupon, right?

(I don't feel I'm entitled to a greater discount; I'm just trying to figure out all the angles.)

Looking forward to getting Battlestar 4.5, it went up to $34.52, which makes it $25.89 after the discount. Still a good enough deal for me if the price holds.

For all the detractors to the DD sale...keep in mind that some of us pay sales tax when we visit a Fry's, B&N or Amazon (a whopping 9.5% in WA). Thus, I prefer the online sales. :)

Don't forget about amazon.co.uk for BBC titles. Even with the cost of shipping (less than you think) they can be surprising bargains. And you can have them years before they're in the US...if they ever do come to the US.

There is the whole region-free player thing, though.

Then:
1) List what they are.
2) List what the prices were before they "skyrocketed."
3) Confirm that the pre-skyrocketed prices were not atypical prices for those items at DD (in other words, not part of a pre-existing sale and/or price-match or other price reduction--relatively easy to tell, based on the % discount from the "Why Pay..?" price).

I was planning to order the Star Trek Trilogy on Blue Ray. It is now at $49.54 and about a week ago it was less. Maybe some in the forum remembers the price. Transformers Blu is at $25.85.

After the 25% discount they will be $37.46 and 19.39 respectively while Amazon has them currently at $29.99 and $18.49.

Yes, Amazon currently has the Star Trek Trilogy for $29.99, which is 55% off the list price. That is a very good discount and it is hard for anyone to go past 55% as a sale price and still maintain some profit. DD will price match Amazon if you want. Usually, I will just go with who has the lowest price instead of price matching. In this case, I would say buy from Amazon or Walmart that has a similar price.

I'm not saying you, but it is interesting the wrath that DD gets sometimes. Many expect them to always have the lowest price and during the sale to be 25% lower then the competitions price. BN and Borders are never even close, but there is good competition between Amazon and DD and this past year I think I have actually bought more from Amazon then DD for the first time. However, even Amazon does not have a sale that includes practically evey title they have. That is what makes this sale unique and for me appreciated.

DD recently was having a sale on most (if not all) of the Star Trek titles. That sale has ended. I don't have the price of the trilogy, but "Star Trek: the Animated Series" was about $18.99 and is now $24.95. The other titles had similar price reductions.

It has only been a couple of years since they combined their CDs with DVDs in one store. The first year they had the DVD sale after the combo, they put a number of books and CDs on sale but the coupon codes did not work on these items. Sorry, but you opinion about this is only valid if the prices were consistently that low, and are then raised. If there is a temporary price reduction for some reason (price-matching, another sale, special deal from the studio/distributor), and then that ends, you have no justification for your feeling that the price should stay that low so that you can then get an ADDITIONAL price reduction. OTOH, if the price has been at a certain level for 6 months, and then suddenly increases during the sale, and then drops back again after the sale, then you have justification.

I am sure lots of people have other good examples.
Don't be so sure. Sweeping claims without evidence just make people look foolish. Others have tried. All have failed. Has DD raised prices right before a sale and then dropped them again right after, in order to lessen or negate the discount? Definitely. Has it been across the board or on a large scale? Absolutely not. These are isolated incidents.

Whenever DD or anyone runs a special sale on particular items such as a "Buy 1 Get 1" sale, it's often a better sale than their 25% off sale. A lot of times those sales are limited to titles from a particular distributor (Paramount, MGM, Sony, Universal) and the distributor helps the retailer out during the promotion. They are not going to run a sale on top of a sale to price something below cost.

The 25% off sale (especially now that it's 25% off instead of 20) is without a doubt the best across-the-board sale that anyone runs, online or B&M. Nobody is ever going to have the lowest price on every single item in their inventory. If you don't like their price, wait and see if they put the items you want on sale, and if they do, you'll get a better deal. If they don't you won't.

The MSRP on Zodiac is $37, which means that street price usually runs about $25-30. Amazon has the title on sale now for $17.99, which is is pretty close to the price that DD had it on sale for. At $23.85, in two weeks with 25% off, it will cost $17.88.

So normally, this title will cost you about $25. You could have bought it two weeks ago for under $18. You can buy it right now at Amazon for under $18. You can wait two weeks and buy it from DD from under $18 again. Those all seem like pretty good deals... take your pick. If I had to guess, I'd guess that cost is around $15 for the title.

The one thing you won't be able to do, not from DD, or Amazon, or anyone is to get it below cost because you think that's a "good" sale. If you want to keep waiting until someone runs what you think is a good sale, you'll be waiting a long time.

It's called the Original Motion Picture collection because it's the original crew from the 60's TV series. Part 7-10 is the Next Generation crew. I believe Paramount probably thinks there are fans who only care about Kirk, Spock etc.

Because the collection was a tie-in with the new movie that was based on the original characters (Kirk, Spock, Bones) that are also featured in these films.
Unless sales are bad for the "Original Motion Picture Collection" I'm sure the other films will get their own collection at some point in the near future, possibly when the new film arrives on video or when the sequel hits the big screen.

this price makes me wish that dd took used dvd's. dvdplanet's price for this is $99.36, which even with 25% off is still more expensive.

Nobody is ever going to have the lowest price on every single item in their inventory.
Huh? Doesn't DeepDiscount guarantee they have the lowest price on anything they sell?

GUARANTEED LOWEST TOTAL PRICE

DeepDiscount.com guarantees offering the lowest total price on any individual, in stock, DVD, CD, Game and Book of any other online retailer of these items. If you find an individual item offered from any other online retailer at a lower total price than offered at DeepDiscount.com we will match the lower advertised price.
So your statement is incorrect in this instance. They will match any online retailer's total price PERIOD.

My take is that he was referring to the advertised price on their website, which is what most will reference when comparison shopping. But, yes they will price match after taking into consideration other cost differences (e.g., shipping and handling).

But they will charge you the shipping cost that the other retailer charges, even if you can combine items at the other retailer and get free shipping. And there are many other exceptions in the fine-print, too, so they won't match with Costco or Spun (even on new items), for example. The only time I ever requested a price-match with them, it took 7 days for them to get back to me, and by then the price was no longer the same at Amazon, and they wouldn't match it.

Bottle Rocket

Seventh Seal
Third Man
Last Emperor

Pretty much my buying will be Criterion BDs also. Let's hope they stay!

Even though it has been explained multiple times in a variety of ways, some still don't seem to get it, so I will try one other way of explaining it.

For places like Amazon and DD, there is the manufacturers list price, their standard discount price, and then an additional sales price. For the most part, neither Amazon nor DD sell at the manufacturers list price, but instead calculate a discounted price that keeps them competitve while still making a profit. At times they will discount further their standard discounted price with a sales price for various reasons (e.g., clearing stock, manufacturer incentives).

Both Amazon and DD will have regular sales going on throughout the year of one type or another (e.g., by genre, manufacturer, B1G1). These sales are above and beyond their standard discounted price. Some times they will have the same items on sale at the same time and other times not. Some sales are not widely publicized or as obvious on an item by item basis. As a result, without monitoring pricing of an item periodically, it may be difficult to determine what is its standard discount price vs. a discount price with an additional sales price.

While DD's 25% off price is not always the best deal you will find on an individual item throughout the year, it is the only time that practically all items are on sale at one time. As a result, they have to let all their other sales end first, which means many items will go up in price just prior to the 25% off sale since they were part of another sale. Now there may even be other cases where some prices may have to be increased or the item taken out of the sale because the profit margin may be to slim to take off another 25% from their standard discounted price.

It seems like most of the confusion comes from people matching a price point they saw of an item against the DD standard discounted price for the 25% off sale that was:
- either part of an additional sale at the time at DD or a competitor,
- is currently on sale below the standard discount at a competitor in competition with DD's 25% off sale,
- or would have been to low to make a profit on at 25% off the standard price so it had to be raised.

The sale is about getting 25% off the standard discounted price (i.e., discounted price - 25%), not to get an additional 25% off an already sales price of DD's or a competitor (i.e., discounted price - existing sales discount - 25%).

At least that's how I perceive it.

This is very true. I think I've managed to price match successfully once or twice in the last few years. A few other times I tried it became more trouble then it was worth so i just bought it from the other vendor.

I don't know if it is such a good idea to mention titles you will purchase if the price doesn't increase. They have to manually change prices. If they check this thread you may be reminding them of prices that need to be changed before the sale.

Here are two titles for which the prices "skyrocketed" (the quotes may not even be necessary):

The Truman Show [Blu-ray Disc]
June 21: $14.36 July 5: $20.35

Zodiac [Blu-ray Disc]
June 21: $17.56 July 5: $23.85

Even with 25% off the current price, they are more expensive then they were two weeks ago. Sorry, but this is not what I think of a sale.

I am sure lots of people have other good examples.
Cheers.

Welcome to the Internet is more like it... This place isn't unique in this regard. People get defensive (and offensive) for no personal, invested reason.

As far as the other commentary on this sale and DDD's practices:

If someone perceives there's shenanigans going on and can justify it to themselves to skip the sale entirely, who cares?

If someone finds a good deal or two to be had through this sale, who cares?

If someone only buys DVDs through this (or any other) sale, regardless of the micro-management required to get the best deal on every title, who cares?

...The one thing you won't be able to do, not from DD, or Amazon, or anyone is to get it below cost because you think that's a "good" sale. If you want to keep waiting until someone runs what you think is a good sale, you'll be waiting a long time. Not necessarily. Like many others here I picked up some recently released Bond Blu-ray Discs for $4.99 each last November from Amazon, in addition to a number of other BD titles for $7 to $10. Such deals do happen. I am curious to see if there will be any similar deals this coming November. I am willing to be patient and don't consider it to "be waiting a long time", although perhaps you do.

In addition, MSRP and wholesale prices for DVDs and BDs tend to drop over time. For the thrifty, waiting has its advantages. I don't get the "gotta have it NOW" mentality that so many seem to have but would guess that it is much appreciated by the studios.

Has DD raised prices right before a sale and then dropped them again right after, in order to lessen or negate the discount? Definitely.

Does this sort of practice occur in businesses throughout the world, including grocery and furniture stores? Yes.

Are people aware of this? Apparently not.

astru
07-07-09, 12:51 AM
Sorry, but you opinion about this is only valid if the prices were consistently that low, and are then raised. If there is a temporary price reduction for some reason (price-matching, another sale, special deal from the studio/distributor), and then that ends, you have no justification for your feeling that the price should stay that low so that you can then get an ADDITIONAL price reduction. OTOH, if the price has been at a certain level for 6 months, and then suddenly increases during the sale, and then drops back again after the sale, then you have justification.

They are far from isolated examples, but you asked only for SOME examples rather than an exhaustive list. I had more than 20 blu-rays in my cart on June 21st and the price went up for all of them (although 25% off the current price would make most of them slightly cheaper than they were in June).

In terms of consistency, Truman Show has been consistently priced at under $15 on both DD and Amazon (and even Target sells it for $14.99). I got it for $12.99, so I am not really complaining about this or any particular disc. All I was saying is that DD have increased their prices, in some cases dramatically, before releasing the coupons. You asked for examples and I provided some. There is a way to find out how extensive and substantial this price increase is, but I will let you discover it. Unfortunately, DD’s deals are nowhere close to what DDD’s deals used to be.

For the folks that feel that a slap is a nice welcome, you are not helping anybody in the long run. I have been on this forum and other DVD-related forums before you knew what a DVD is, when Reel was the most discussed place on these forums and CDNow the most popular Web site. Coraline (blu): $30.39 to $25.87
BSG complete series (blu): $239.51 to $222.76

So your statement is incorrect in this instance. They will match any online retailer's total price PERIOD.

There is a big difference between agreeing to match another retailer's (however obscure) price and pricing it that low to begin with. Most customers don't meticulously comparison price check, expecially on lesser known items, so DD or any retailer will still sell merchandise even if someone somewhere has a lower price that they have to match occasionally. Any retailer who attempts to be aggressively proactive about finding every competitor's sale price and meeting or beating it won't be in business very long.

They do in general terms try to keep their pricing consistent with their major known competitors. No one is perfect at it, and for various reasons they don't try to be.

Actually, that makes it a brilliant idea to mention the titles here. This would help to either bust or confirm the myth that they're jacking up the prices before the sale.

My wishlist for now:

Duckman - Seasons 3&4 $31.89
Watchmen [B]$25.87
Dollhouse - Season 1 [B]$48.89
John Adams [B]$46.39
Dexter - Season 2 [B]$38.89
Sarah Connor Chronicles - Season 1 [B]$26.87

I also wanted Season 4 of Weeds, but the Blu-ray is region locked, so I can't play it on my player. I probably won't get Dollhouse or John Adams either, as the price has to be below $30 before shipping to avoid import taxes, which means the price needs to drop below $40 before the discount, and I don't think that's realistic.

I fully expect it to go back up.
It would be nice if it doesn't, but I think it will since Amazon is at a similar price point. I don't think DD can best an already aggressive discount by 25%.

OTOH, this is a high msrp title and what should be a popular one. They may be able to move enough of these in volume to make up for a huge discount compared to the nickel and dime margins on many other discs.

well see.

I think the main frustration with the erratic pricing is that (generally speaking) over time, prices decrease.

For catalog titles that have been out for a while, it's very frustrating to see a reasonable price go up for no apparent reason. I like Amazon, but their genius programmers with their pricing algorithms can drive you batty.

With DD, many of us have a long-standing affinity with this company going back a number of years. When we notice prices going up with no corresponding end to a promotion or a sale, it's cause for head-scratching, and possibly directing our money for that coveted triple-dip elsewhere.

If I was DD I would. If 10,000 (just an example) people have the BSG Blue-Ray box set in their wish list. Raise the price $2.50. That's an easy $25,000 with the flick of a switch.

It's not difficult to get software to add up all the wish lists and determine which DVDs, etc... are the most "wished for".

Exactly! Right now I'm holding hard and fast to a 50% discount off the MSRP for any dvd I purchase. There's no doubt that if I'm patient I can get anything I want for that discount at some point (usually within a few months, surely within a year).

A few of the items in my wishlist have increased by a dollar since I started keeping track a week or so back. If those titles don't increase any more in the next week or so, I can still make my 50% discount. That's what I'll do if they hold. If not, no big deal. I'll just wait for another sale from either DD or another online site. It's that simple.

My guess is that those prices were do to the studio providing incentives to Amazon that allowed them to sell them for cheaper, thus lowering Amazon's cost (i.e., not below cost). If you really think that Amazon broke even on selling $35 MSRP BDs for $4.99, shipped, there isn't much I can say. Yes, there were manufacturer's incentives used, two deals that stacked. Then Amazon — or the studio — spotted what was going on and eliminated one of the deals.

The point I was trying to make was not that stores sometimes sell merchandise below cost as "loss leaders" or to clear out stock — they do — but, rather, to point out that very good sale prices can be found by those willing to wait for them. $4.99 (or $7 to $10) for recently released Blu-ray Discs is a good deal (people here hyperventilate over BDs priced at $15 to $20). Silverscreenvid implied that those of us who wait for such exceptional deals are foolish. I disagree. Excluding sets and gifts, my average cost of BDs is currently $8.31. It can be done.

I've got several BDs in my DD wish list. For now, even with 25% off the price would be too high for me to pull the trigger. I'll wait and hope for better deals to come. It's not as if I don't have a lot of other discs to watch!

^ Amen! That's pretty much how I do it, too.

^ Yep, good deals are there for the patient. I'm currently at about 120 BDs for about $7 per. I don't even consider a BD until it is $10 or less nowadays.

So you guys honestly think that the patient amongst us will eventually find better deals on Criterion BDs than the DD sale? Please elaborate....

The price went back down to $69.39. I hope it stays at that price.

I just decided to buy Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection on blu-ray from a Amazon.com Market Place seller. He was selling a brand new factory sealed copy for $50 + $2.98 shipping. Just about the same price I would of paid from DD with the 25% off, if it stayed at their current price of $69.39.

DD had a B1G1 free Criterion sale a month after last year's June sale...prices came out to be around $16 for the $39.95 list titles and around $12 for the $29.95 list titles. I am going to hold off ordering Criterion titles in this sale and wait and see if they do this again. If they don't, I will pick them up in the year end sale.

I had a really basic question about the sale.

I've participated in it every year but I always forget what the policy is on pre-orders. If I pre-order, say, the BSG complete series box set on the 17th and use the coupon on that day and it ships on or near the 28th, the day it streets, then will the discount still apply or do I need to wait 'til the 28th? I ask because someone mentioned, because of the popularity and the sale, that the box set might sell out quickly and I just wanted to clarify. Thanks, all.

Even though the sale will run thru the date the set goes on sale, you can only order the item and receive the discount once it goes live on the 28th. Also, if you do order it during the sale and it does go on backorder, they will still sell it to you at the discounted price.

Generally, there are about 10 different codes that will work during the sale. DVDTALK, USATODAY, DEEP and SUPERSALE are a few that I can remember off the top of my head that have always worked in the past. Other Dvd Talkers will post codes in the forum that work. You shouldn't have a problem finding codes. Just keep checking here.

Just an FYI - I picked up the Twilight Zone box a few months ago from Target.com for less than $90 (thanks to this site). You may want to hold off and wait for a good deal to pop up again. Then again, it's a great set and you may not want to wait....

If you don't plan on watching it any time soon, you might as well wait. The only direction the price will go is down. You might get lucky and find a great deal on it on Black Friday. There's no reason to buy it on release if you aren't going to watch it straight away, but you definitely have to get it at some point...it's my second favorite show ever.

Agree, why would you want to shell out $100+ for the BSG complete series set if you don't think your going to have time to watch it anytime soon?

You might as well finish the stuff your backed up on 1st and buy the set later when you actually have time to watch them. It's better than throwing it in the closet sealed and letting it gather dust.

You cannot use the coupon code on preorders. You will have to wait until the product is officially released.

You can use the coupon code multiple times as long as the sale is still going on. If the product is out of stock, you can still order it at the discount price and it will ship at a later date when it's back in stock.

It has always been that each code is a one-time use during the sale, but there are about a dozen different codes that will be listed once the sale actually starts, so you can place multiple orders using a different code each time.

Doesn't it work for preorders purchased within a week of the release date? (For instance, Repulsion is released 7/28 but the coupon may work on 7/22) Or am I thinking of something else?

On a different note, is there going to be a new thread once the sale actually begins?

Silverscreenvid implied that those of us who wait for such exceptional deals are foolish.

I don't think it's foolish to take advantage of killer deals when they are out there. I buy off Amazon and DD and others through the year when there's a killer deal. However, I also realize that those are very hit-and-miss.

Usually, the movies I buy during those deals are films that are "below my radar." In other words, they are movies I wouldn't mind having but not ones that when I see released I say, "I'm going to get that movie as soon as it's at a good price."

When DD runs its sale, I look at its prices and I ask myself: (1) is this a good price and (2) do I realistically think there's a good chance there will be a significantly better price in the next six months (not a few cents cheaper but a few dollars cheaper)?

I recognize the DD sale for what it is, the best across the board sale available. I also know that no matter what I do, I will NEVER get the best price that's ever available on every disk. If I try to wait for that, I'll be waiting a long time.

On a different note, is there going to be a new thread once the sale actually begins?Last time around, DVD Planet let you use their 25%-off code on pre-releases with a release date during the sale period. Deep Discount did not, however. You had to actually wait for them to update their database on the release date so it was no longer considered a pre-release. That usually happened sometime late on Monday night/Tuesday morning.

On a side note, Deep Discount never has permitted multiple uses of the same code on the same account. You could use any or all of the dozens of codes that were available, but you could use each one only once. However, DVD Planet has always only had one code (25OFFSALE or something similar), which you could use multiple times on the same account.

And yes, there will absolutely be a new, very prominent thread announcing the launch of the sale. In past years, there was an unofficial announcement here on DVD Talk at about 4pm ET on the Thursday before the official launch date on Friday. So DVD Talkers got to place their orders before the general public.

I think many of us are at the point that we have built up some decent libraries of titles. So, agreed, at this point, it has to be a great price to get me to buy. Six years ago, I might have bought 25 titles, the last couple of sales, perhaps one title per sale. I guess I just don't need more stuff to have more stuff along with other sales later on in the year that are flat out better deals - not as a full-sized sale perhaps, but on individual titles. I think there is little doubt that the economy will tank 4th quarter sales with the likely outcome that studios will have to HEAVILY discount titles accordingly. I can wait - and if I'm wrong - I can still wait. ;)

Easily solved. "Create a DD Sale: What did you get?!" thread. I'm sure people will post in it. I too have found those posts useful for things I'd forgotten I wanted during the sale.

Agree, why would you want to shell out $100+ for the BSG complete series set if you don't think your going to have time to watch it anytime soon?
I have to agree. Hold off on BSG if you're not going to watch it immediately. More than likely several people will blind buy the whole series then decide it wasn't their thing and resell it for super cheap on Half.com or eBay. You get a pristine copy at a significant discount!

We've tried a "what did you get" only post - but it doesn't stay that way and unfortunately it becomes too much work to moderate. delete posts. edit posts. move posts. etc

if we don't move the deleted posts, they get re-posted. people repeatedly ask why their post was deleted, etc.

So we stick with the one thread (and sometimes a separate thread in store forum for those who wish to bitch and moan)

Ditto on that. Also I think a fair number are going to be put off by the ending, and after watching it will want to sell for that reason. I don't want to start an argument about whether it was a good ending or not -- I can respect those who liked the whole plot arc and the ending, but a look at the reviews of season 4.5 on amazon.com suggest to me that a lot of BSG sets are going to be available for resale -- there are plenty of unhappy customers.

In all honesty, while it bugs me that DD ups the prices on a lot of their stuff, in the end I always keep the same method:

1. Pick out a large number of DVDs from my want-list that I want to buy now
2. Compare DDs pre-discount prices to Amazon and other vendors
3. Weed out the titles that aren't a good enough deal after the 25% off
4. Make my purchase

I can understand why some people are upset when they have a specific title that they've been waiting for, but I guess I just have more patience now than I did a few years back. I can wait as long as it takes for a title to get to the right price.

Perhaps a separate thread labeled bitching, as suggested above.
