God Bless America! Capitalism is a wonderful thing, even if some DVD sets I want are up 10%+ over the last 4 months, prior to the 25% sale.

I do not see DD holding a gun to anyones head forcing them to buy, you gotta take the good with the bad.

I see some suuuuuuuuper BR deals over there. My cart is full witgh $600+ right now waiting to submit on the 17th.

I think many of us are at the point that we have built up some decent libraries of titles. So, agreed, at this point, it has to be a great price to get me to buy.

I agree with that, which is why almost everything I get off the DD sales is something that has either just been released or substantially reduced in price in the last six months. I usually buy catalogue titles (box sets and TV series often have 2/1 deals at some times so I hold off on them). The exception is something that I hadn't previously been aware of but learned about fairly recently (either that it was out on DVD or that it was a desirable title).

New releases will almost always be available cheaper in 6-12 months anyway.

I know the prices at DD are good and I don't gripe at fluctuations in DVD prices. Yes, they do go up and down throughout the year, but I'm still disappointed that DD just raised the price on a good portion of the DVDs I had on my wish list by 25%. If it were a couple of dollars either way, I would have just expected prices to fluctuate, but I'm disappointed with them when I see that the prices have gone up exactly 25% on some items on my wish list before the 25% off sale goes into affect. This is more than a mere coincidence. Best regards to all.

I'm not going through the 11 pages to see if this was pointed out, but regarding prices going up... do you think if an item is in wish lists, they automatically make them higher? Or is it all of the titles going up??

Just a thought. I'm not wish-listing anything, haha.

^ We're only on page 7.

I thought it has been clearly documented/proven that DD prices fluctuate all the time, and that just as many prices drop as go up in the days preceding a sale. Why are people still complaining?

My guess, because theirs went up and they don't care if some other guys went down.

nothing in mine has gone up.
As others have said earlier, I look at the msrp and what my final price will be after the discount, and if it comes out to being a bargain I'm happy with, I'll likely order- if not, I'll just pass. Price fluctuations don't matter. The price I pay when I submit the order does.
And then there are the titles I was planning to get regardless of a sale or not.

That's why I'm happy they pushed this sale back. Many titles I have in my wish list would have missed the sale if they'd had it in the usual time frame this year- so even though I may have lost money by not waiting and ordering stuff back in the 10% off sale in April, I may be getting a chance to make up for that now.

Bingo. "If the facts conflict with my own personal experience, they must be wrong."

I think it only makes sense that there be an outpouring of frustration after waiting, what, eight months now? And then after the anxiety over whether there would even be a sale this summer...people gotta vent!

I noticed that the A&E Pride and Prejudice (blu-ray) went up in price to $30. The $20 price was way too good to last.

I know for sure they were having a sale on the A&E DVDs; maybe it extended to BDs too?

Betting the DVDTALK code will start a day early like past sales unless DeepDiscount mistakes the actions in this thread of hardcore bargain hunting and enthusiasm for whining and complaining. Guess it depends how ya look at it. :)

Something completely OT but does anyone else get annoyed by the glass half full/empty debate? I've always taken the realistic view that it is half empty since you're in the process of drinking or emptying the contents of the glass, where as, if you're filling a garbage can with trash it would be half full since you're in the process of filling it. The only time the trash can is empty is when ya switch bags and the only time the glass is full is when ya pour it to the top. To be sure though when faced with this question one should ask if I'm drinking from the glass or pouring liquid into it. I know I'm taking it a bit literal and it's a philosophical question but it's not one I've ever agreed with. :D

Do you say a theater is half empty or half full? Same thing. It was empty until people started sitting down to watch the movie so now it's half full. The better question would be if the theater was full and half the people left 'cause the movie sucked is it still considered half full since the original purpose was to fill the theater and not empty it (this place is emptying out quick but is still half full), or half empty since it was full and now that people are leaving it has started the process of emptying the theater even though that wasn't the intended purpose at the time (this place was full but is now half empty). :D

i think they were matching Amazon on that one...because it was $19.99 at amazon first...and I just checked and it still is amazingly enough. so there ya go....it's not like you can expect a better price on a reference quality set that is incredibly popular.

If certain Blus do not go up between now and the sale, there is still a chance I will make some purchases for my personal collection (already plan to pick up the latest two The Waltons sets that are out for my mom). Titles like POTC Trilogy, Pitch Black and Chronicles value pack, Cassablanca, The Middleman, Dollhouse, and Mad Men S2, Dollhouse, X-Men animated Vols. 1 & 2, and T3 might make their way into my cart. If it were not for Netflix, Mistresses S1, Weeds S4, Burn Notice S2, and Breaking Bad S1 would have been on the list.

When presented with this scenario, I try to transgress it by saying "It's only half full." Why isn't my glass filled all the way? Only half full is a letdown. Either give me a smaller glass or fill the current one the rest of the way.

Do not try and fill the glass. That's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth -- there is no glass. Then you'll see that it is not the glass that fills, it is only yourself.

So, buy, buy more, buy more now, buy, and be happy.

How many of you bought a ton of stuff from the last sale and still haven't even watched them yet? I still have 5-6 titles from the last sale in November that I haven't watched yet. If I do pick up a few things, I hope to only get things that I will actually watch and not throw in the closet for the next year or two.

Geez, I could go back further than just the last sale. I used to buy stuff that I really want to see now and stuff that is just great movies at a good price, but what I'm realizing is that by the time I get to the 'just great movies at a good price' the price is even cheaper in stores and I think if only I had waited.

Now days I've really cut back on buying movies on dvds. TV on dvd is my weakness, I guess I perceive more value there (which is strange because its just selling me what was free on tv), but most movies a Red Box rental suffices, until the dvd hits $5 or less at Walmart or somewhere.

Shoot. I never complain about the price increases, but just this morning I had placed about a dozen classic Doctor Who dvds in my cart and just about every one of them has been increased by about 25% in the last several hours. Very bummed about that. Guess those are going out of the cart. Oh well. Still got my original items that have maintained their prices.

LOL. John Adams is now over $51.
but Eastbound and Down (just got this from amazon last night. sorry DD, just a bit too slow decreasing the price.) and 24 season 7 decreased by $3 each. Shield -the final season went down almost $5. Prison break S4 went down $6.50.

I have been buying from this sale for the last 3 or so years. Yeah some things do go up in price. Luckily for me only one item of the some $800 worth went up in price. The item that I want that was about $90 is George Carlin's All my stuff. It went up to about $121. Which with the 25% its the same price as before. But I am not upset. :) I have many others items that have not been jacked up. I mostly buy horror movies from the 70's and 80's and collect scifi. None of my 30 some dvds I want have been raised lol. I still like DD. Most of their items are cheaper than amazon. On a rare occasion I find something cheaper on amazon. And usually for the stuff I want DD has the best price. Then if you add the 25% it's a good deal for me.

I'm quite sure DD has been price-matching with Amazon recently and is raising some of their prices to get ready for the sale. I can't blame them for that. The only bad thing is that some of their prices before the recent raise was far, far better than what a person will be able to get with the 25% off coupon. For instance, they had POPEYE: 1933-1938 on sale for $26.39 up until a day or so ago. Now it's priced at $50.28. Anyone can do the math on that one. So while I don't blame them for the increases, I do think it behooves people to recognize that if they see something with a huge discount they shouldn't assume it's going to stay at that price up through the sale. Some items certainly will stay the same and great bargains will be had. But we can't assume that will hold for everything.

I've been tracking DD prices on the titles I plan on getting during the sale, and so far, most titles are holding - was wanting John Adams, but as chris sc77 mentioned the price has jumped from $26.89 to over $51!!! Bite it DD - I can wait on that one, perhaps it'll be on sale come black friday?

From the Earth to the Moon has actually dropped from $17.85 to $14.87 and the Films of Budd Boetticher has bounced around from $30.89 to $37.89 to $33.89 and now sits at $32.90 -

Cmon, DD, gimme a good price on John Adams and we'll have a deal...

I just noticed George Carlin's all my stuff went down to about $91. It was at $121. But troy (blu ray) went up to about $30 and it was at around $20. It's a good trade off I get more of a discount from they more expensive George Carlin's all my stuff if it stays at the same price. Everything else in my cart is the same price.

If anyone is wanting to pick up John Adams, you could pull the trigger now for the current walmart price of $23.32

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9903970

you can get free shipping and have it delivered to your nearest walmart (never tried that option, so I'm not sure how reliable it is) and pick it up when notified via email that it has arrived.

Um...will DD match this?

Yep. I'm so glad I bought season one last week when it was $17.54. I thought it was a great price and figured even if they didn't raise the price I wouldn't cry about the few more dollars I could have saved. I was worried it would sell out once the sale started, but I was also concerned it would jump up in price and negate any savings. I certainly didn't expect it to jump up to $45.

The few weeks before the sale we always hear about pricing changes. Our understanding is that these fluxuations are due to periodic DD sales, as well as price adjustments based on the competition. It has been shown that many prices go down as well as up, leading to the assumption that it is not an across the board hike as some would like to believe. In my experience, the changes are typically no more then a few dollars in either direction.

What I find most interesting is the references to an item going from $20 one day to $30 the next and back down to $22 the following day. We've had a few such references in this thread and I've seen other such references in other threads. It could just be that we are monitoring our wish lists so closely in these weeks leading up to the sale that we are actually seeing artifacts of DD's pricing analysis that they run throughout the year, but it is just more evident to us now.

For example, say DD's pricing strategy is a multi-step process. First, they reset all the prices to to their default standard discount based on list price, studio incentives, and profit margins. This could result in small increases/decreases based on their previous prices, or large price hikes when some item were marked low due to a DD sale or competition sale. Second, they apply a reduction based on any current promotion they are running. Lastly, they analyze the competition and adjust prices accordingly making sure to go no lower then the minimal profit margin. This could lower prices a little or a significantly amount depending on various factors. With the DD site being available 24/7 these types of changes may be being made live, which may explain some of the irregularities seen if people are catching the prices inbetween stages of the process.

Just one possible explanation for what we are observing. It would be interesting if people monitored there wish lists as closely during off periods of DD to see if similar behavior could be identified.

We could simply look at www.dvdpricesearch.con (http://209.10.210.230) and find the "cached" prices prior to recent changes.

For instance, Friends: The Complete Series was $153.89 as linked below:

http://www.dvdpricesearch.con/cgi-bin/dvdcalc2?cmd=calc&tmpCart=59514 (http://209.10.210.230/cgi-bin/dvdcalc2?cmd=calc&tmpCart=59514)

The latest information (straight from DD that is) should be $215.90 and here it is:

http://www.deepdiscount.com/viewproduct.htm?productId=5788182

I thought that $115 would be cool for 10 seasons of Friends but it might be more like $162 instead. Maybe importing R2 from UK could be a better deal - 70 quids shipped or roughly 115 bucks from Amazon UK. German version from Amazon DE is 86 euros or 120 dollars shipped.

Still not exactly sure about what they are up to these days. It would be funny to see something going from $153.89 to $215.90 and then back to $153.89 again.

So sick of this.

Maybe DD was price-matching Wal-Mart or Amazon. If you want the price-match, call them, and order it.

Go UK R2 if you don't mind PAL speed-up. Drives me crazy.

Or buy it from Amazon or Wal-Mart, where the price is still $153. If you wanted an additional 4% cashback, or were expecting that low price to be discounted even further during the next sale, well, you missed out.

As for the price change on this one? I have this price cached in an Excel spreadsheet for the period of the last sale, and then spot checks during the months after. Guess what the price was over the last few months before the recent price reduction. That's right, $215.90. It was actually on sale during and immediately following the previous DD 25%-off sale, and was $199.89, which after discount was $149.92, and after Bing cashback was $141.92.

I thought it has been clearly documented/proven that DD prices fluctuate all the time, and that just as many prices drop as go up in the days preceding a sale. Why are people still complaining?

Judging by the top, it was page 11 on my screen. And, yes, I realized someone pointed out it depends on the options.

And I wasn't complaining, just suggesting an idea. I know prices fluctuate with the times. But that may ALSO be a factor. I know if something hot at most stores, prices increase. Just an IDEA.

I buy what I want, when I want, without complaining. If it's cheap, I'll buy it; if not, I won't.

This is one of the reasons I quit posting here in the first place. Someone always has to refute something.

I don't think it's really official quite yet, since none of the other codes seem to be working (e.g., DVDTALK). Best to wait until there's an official announcement, especially since people who placed orders last month using an "unofficial" code haven't had their orders filled yet.

If people are concerned Deep Discount may raise prices before the sale starts you may not want to have anything in your wish list. I assume Deep Discount has access to the lists and they may use this information to their advantage. Just a suggestion IMHO.

Y'know, something I noticed today. By now, there's a whole host of codes that come out - YAHOO, XM, LATIMES, etc. - for use in the sale. And as it stands, there've only been two that have been verified, and those may end up not working (possibly) because of the abuse of glitches in the DD system.

Am I missing something? There's by no means a plethora of codes being made known, and with the sale starting tomorrow, I find that quite odd.

bsmith
07-16-09, 10:27 AM
I don't think the codes are ever formally advertised until the sale actually starts. Once it starts the codes will be stated to everyone and not before. It's just that many of the codes don't change from year to year so most are already aware of what they will be.

I noticed last night that my DD cart was cleared (fortunately all my selections for this go around are in my wish list). I seem to recall this always happens just before the sale starts.

All these new codes, plus the change in date this year, make me wonder if some of the policies such as multiple orders using multiple codes, might be changed as well.

DVD Planet changed its policy IIRC on its last sale. I was fortunate that I placed one big order right away, otherwise I would have been SOL. Even though They only provide one coupon code, it had been a multiple use one, until the last sale.

Since I have some stuff I want coming out next Tuesday, I may just hold off until I see confirmation multiple coupons are valid on the same account as always.

Live Cashback 2X - starting 8/1/2009 (5-50%)
So it looks like Live CashBack will be doubling there amounts for ALL STORES starting August 1st, 2009! This means all those eBay items you want, could qualify for the promotion.

I am apprehensive about using Bing CashBack for the DD sale.

Bing has a new policy that if you use a coupon for an order you cannot get cashback. That is why none of the B&N orders that are being put through recently with a coupon are getting a rebate (The only order I got cashback from was one without a coupon).

Wanna have some fun but spend loooooads of time to find super deals. Type in the search word "complete series". I have found some great deals, that is for regular dvd's, I am a serious rip 'n burn then sell guy, so series from pre '90 are good deals.

Examples of final cost deals after 4% Bing and the 25% DD (prices below are estimates)

Hogans Heroes - 78.00

I am apprehensive about using Bing CashBack for the DD sale.

Bing has a new policy that if you use a coupon for an order you cannot get cashback. That is why none of the B&N orders that are being put through recently with a coupon are getting a rebate (The only order I got cashback from was one without a coupon).

I got a bing confirmation right away for DD and I used DVDTALK code.

Hmmm.... nothing in my inbox yet...I once heard from a CSR that they don't send out confirmation emails in real time upon placement of an order. Orders are held on a server somewhere, then periodically downloaded and sent out in batches. How often depends on their sales volume. I assume they'd download orders from the server fairly frequently during a big sale like this.

need some help- I never used cashback before (I have an account) but get how it works generally- go to bing.com and go to deepdiscount through there and then place my order and they'll email me my savings information afterward?

Is the best way to use cashback to use my paypal account? I see the normal option is a paper check in the mail. There's no additional fees or anything for using paypal?

There is company that gives cashback for DVD Planet, at present 4%. It is legit, I've used them for other cashback. Similar program as Bing. I can't post the link as I don't have more than 30 posts in this form. Do a search at google for Cashbaq.

Being the pedant that I am, I created a spreadsheet a couple of weeks ago of the score or so of DVDs / sets I wanted once the sale came on.*

So far, most titles are the same price, with a handful more expensive -- and a handful cheaper. The net savings for me is still $7 less than it was a couple of weeks ago, even before applying the 25% off. And that's not taking into account the 4% Bing cashback.

A lot of the flicks I pick up at these sales are classic movies and sets, so maybe they don't have the variability in price, due to lower demand, but it still goes to show that the prices don't ALL go up before the sale, like some claim.

And hopefully they don't all suddenly jump at midnight, having said that
;-)

*as a side note, Deep Discount has probably contributed to about 300 of the DVDs in my collection, over the years.

I officially regret ordering as much as I did durning the 10% off sale in May.
I thought for sure they might pull the summer sale this year so I threw in a bunch of stuff and most of it I still haven't gotten around to watching yet.

Well, I put in an $110 order. I think that's all I can do for now. If it's still live on the 2nd, I might put something on next month's credit card bill. The TV shows I ordered were a pretty good deal, I thought. I just did this, quickly comparing to Amazon. Mysterious cities of Gold was like $45 on Amazon and $35 on DD before discount. CSI seasons ended up under $20 after discount I think.

Got:
Summerslam Anthology Vol 2
CSI Season 2 & 3
Mysterious Cities of Gold (backordered)
Crow: Wicked Prayer
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Gruesome Edition

Editing this post, whined earlier about not getting Bing e-mail, but it came through...$12.24 cashback! Also should note I used DVDTALK code so this great website could benefit.

Ya gotta be careful with this sale, some things are cheaper on Amazon, and some Blus are just still too expensive on amazon or DD to justify purchasing during this sale.

If prices hold, the Battlestar 4.5 set will be a great bargain during this sale.

Three questions before I make an order, and I appreciate your help:

1. How long does the sale last? I'm hoping to pick up Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series but it's in pre-order status until it comes out July 28.

2. How do I get additional discounts / cash back besides the 25% off codes? I don't know anything about bing, etc.

3. Once I use a code, can I use it for another order or do I need a new code? Does DVDTalk get a kickback when I use the DVDTalk code?

Thanks, folks.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered already, but can one use the code(s) to place more than one order during the sale?

If so, I can save a couple of dozen bucks in the shipping department if I do decide to buy a lot. Shipping to Canada is an outrageous $100 for orders over $300. Used to be a flat rate of $3.95 for orders of any size, which crept up to $4.95, then $5.95, and now this. I can certainly understand that those old rates represented a loss for DD, and are no longer feasible from a business standpoint, but the new rates are unreasonable in the opposite direction (you Americans still have the benefit of a flat rate).
I don't really mean to complain, since DD during the sales is by far the best DVD bargain to be had, especially at a discount of 25% vs. 20%, but it reminds me a little of buying those CDs for $.01 from JoeSchmoe merchant at Amazon and paying $10-per to ship.

I order from Canada. There are about a dozen codes so use one for each order. I keep the orders just below $150.00 (before discount) each so the postage is $16.95 per order. I usually place 2 or 3 orders. Also keeping them below $150.00 gives you a better chance that they won't get whacked for taxes at Customs.

While the sale applies to backordered DVDs, do remember that the sale does NOT apply to pre-ordered DVDs. You can do it as many times as you like.

I ordered:

Lexx: Season 1 $16.78
Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection [Blu-ray Disc] $52.04

I might place one more order near the end of the sale. Having the Rightstuf sale pop up as well was rather annoying.

Was planning to buy Doctor Who the complete series 4, but they Jacked the price up at least 15 dollars - their discounted price with the 25% is more than Buy.com's price straight up. This will be the first year in many I pass on a DDD sale.

Hahaha. I thought I was the only person thinking on buying that. Guess not!
The price DD has for the collection is a great deal. I don't think we'll ever see it get below $35, at least not for a long time. I'm just afraid that they'll abruptly stop printing the set, causing it to go OOP by time the winter sale comes around so I wanted to get it ASAP. That and I want to support a Cartoon Network original release in hopes that they will push out Dexter's Lab one of these years.

What is the complete list of codes?

The coupon seems to work with a 80 GB PS3. When I applied the DVDTALK code it deducted $100 off the price. I also tried it with a Wii system and Blu-ray player and the coupon deducts 25% off.
Oh wow... you're not joking o_O

I can't imagine that's not an error they'll have corrected by the end of the day...

The only DVD set I wanted went up $17 once the sale started.

So what's the whole "bing" thing about? How does it work? What do you save?

Does the e-mail address you use at bing have to match the e-mail on your DD account?

i have a question that i know one of you will be able to help with please. i am looking at getting the dirty harry collection dvd ($35.89) but it says fullscreen. i can't find a collection that indicates ws other than the bluray. when i check the individual discs they indicate they are ws. what's the scoop here? is there really a fs collection and dd just doesn't have widescreen? anyone order this previously and know the answer? many thanks and happy bargain hunting!

p.s. nice name bigE :)

If I order something that is "temporarily out of stock" will I be charged full price when it ships?

So I've placed my order through Bing, gotten my confirmation email for it, but I still don't have any activity in my cashback account. How long does it take for that to show up or did I do something wrong??

you get the discount whether it is in stock or not. The only time this won't apply is when it is not in stock because it is a pre-order.
