JVC 36" TV 16:9 or 4:3?

16:9 only applies to those rectangular TV's you see.
Most normal TV's are standard 4:3 which is a more square picture. DVD players normally have (well atleast mine does) 3 settings, 4:3 standard, 4:3 WS, or 16:9 WS.
Lot's more technical stuff that I could go detail into when it comes to home theatre (HT), but alot of acronyms and funny words to keep straight in the head, sometimes even I can't ;-) Some are easy, some are interchangeable, some are technical.
PAL, NTSC, HDTV, 2.35:1 (?), 1.85:1 (?),Anamorphic, WS, LTBX, DD, DTS, SDDS, THX, line doublers (for front mount projectors) etc etc etc .. anyone got any others? We should start a technical dictionary explaining it :-)
The ones that screw up me the most are the damn aspect ratios, which are scewed perspectives, which aren't ... how do they work on regular TV's (4:3) ... I think thats why some movies have bigger sets of top/bottom bars then others with smaller bars .... but WHY? aren't all movies displayed on the same spect ratio movie screens in the theatre?
And to think all of the considerations just to watch a movie at home the best possible way

Actually they're not, hence the different aspect ratios of DVD movies. For example, I saw Road Trip the other night which was shot in 1.85:1. I could tell because the picture was the full height of the screen but not the full width. Conversely a 2.35:1 film,such as Gladiator which I have still not seen
,will NOT take up the full height of the screen but will take up the full width.
