Strangely enough, I'd rather see Underworld: 3. This seems a movie someone from a CW TV show would make, not Kate.

Not that that'll stop me from seeing it, I'll see anything with Kate. :)

I was interested based on the plot and whatnot but...considering it's been held back for soooo long. It doesn't sound like good things happened in that time. Anyone know why it took so long?

Looks good. So am I right in assuming the trailers are edited in a misleading manner and there are no supernatural shenanigans in his movie. I looked up some info on the comic and it gave me no indication that it was anything more than a serial killer hunt set in Antarctica. Not that that's a bad thing. I'm still looking forward to this.

Solid Snake

As far as I know that's the plot. What I still don't know is why it took this long to finally come out when it wrapped production a long time ago.

Usually means it sucks ass, though Warner was going through some financial issues at the time and may have just shuffled this release. Plus "sucks ass" for Dark Castle is almost a given, so I'm sure that isn't the real reason.

The posters for this movie go back and forth. The original poster and final poster are both by a company called Concept Arts. They also both suck ass.

http://www.impawards.com/2009/whiteout.html
http://www.impawards.com/2009/whiteout_ver3.html

The first one looks like they took a Sylvester Stallone movie from 1991 and pasted Kate Beckinsale's face on it, although I'll give them credit for the cool tagline (no pun intended). The latter is one of the most overwhelmingly boring posters I've ever seen in my entire life. It's not even a poster, it's just her face with a Photoshop effect on it.

http://www.impawards.com/2009/whiteout_ver2.html

This one was done by Mojo LLC and is fantastic. I'd hang that poster. I wonder if it ever actually ended up in theaters or not.

Not a fan of Ms. Beckinsale. She's sorta pretty in a vapid, soulless way, but her films have been extremely mediocre across the board (save for "The Aviator", and quite frankly she was forgettable in that too).

Add in last summer/September release date + a film that's been sitting on the shelves = I will pretty much never see the fucker.

Not a fan of Ms. Beckinsale. She's sorta pretty in a vapid, soulless way, but her films have been extremely mediocre across the board (save for "The Aviator", and quite frankly she was forgettable in that too).

What an ignorant comment. Kate Beckinsale was terrific in Snow Angels, Winged Creatures, and Nothing But the Truth. You should also check out some of her British films. She was anything but forgettable in Aviator either, even if her character in that film was severely underdeveloped and insignificant. If anything I thought Cate Blanchette's performance was worse, hammy and over the top. She's a great actress who hasn't always chosen the best roles.

She ran into a bit of bad luck with a couple of the films mentioned. The releasing company for Nothing But the Truth went belly up right before awards season. Otherwise she might have gotten more recognition than just her Critic's Choice nomination. Winged Creatures pretty much suffered a similar fate and received an extremely limited release, in only a couple of cities.

As for the "sort of pretty in a vapid, soulless way" comment. Are you blind or gay? ;) Kate Beckinsale isn't sort of pretty. That would be the biggest understatement ever uttered. She's downright astonishing, and the hottest woman in this business as far as I'm concerned.

Well, there's no accounting for taste, as they say. Some of those women are skinnier than Kate and are not what I'd call curvy, especially Maggie Cheung. If we're talking about the same Maggie. Last pics I saw of her, she was skin and bones.

Films like this aren't bumped this far out because of financial reasons.

Actually, from the news I heard this film wasn't delayed because it was terrible. The news I read was it was delayed because the Warner Bros. President Jeff Robinov said "no more films with female leads" back in 2007 right around the time Whiteout was finishing up production. Obviously it has a female lead. So it was put on the back burner. That doesn't mean the film is good. Just that it wasn't delayed because of quality issues. Here's an excerpt from one of many articles about this subject.

Warner Brothers president of production Jeff Robinov just made a bold statement over the weekend: "We are no longer doing movies with women in the lead." Don't you just love Hollywood when the executives make statements like that? This is absolutely baffling, I'm still not sure what to make of it. Apparently this comes on the fringe of WB's two box office "failures": The Brave One with Jodie Foster and The Invasion with Nicole Kidman, which have only made $34 million and $15 million respectively. Nikki Finke from Deadline Hollywood reports the news and claims that a number of producers have confirmed that this is a real statement, but what is this going to do for Warner Brothers?!

http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/10/08/warner-brothers-president-says-no-more-female-lead-characters/

I don't know if this ever got discussed around here at the time. It's old news.

We saw a couple of promos on television last night, and Mrs Danger said, "That's a bad movie." There wasn't a line of dialogue, a coherent sequence, or any idea of the plot. The first was dozens of quick flashes edited together with driving music. The second was the same, with positive quotes from reviews that went by too fast for us to see who wrote them. It sure looks like the studio has no faith in it.

I'm just giving you the info on why it was possibly delayed, not arguing the merits of the film. It's directed by Dominic Sena. That tells me more than any trailer will tell me. Either way, I'm not going to judge a film based on a frickin' TV spot.

The review in yesterday's Detroit Free Press started as follows:

Early in “Whiteout,” a murder mystery set in a South Pole research station, a federal marshal played by Kate Beckinsale strips down and takes a shower.

Why? No particular reason. But enjoy it while you can, fellas. She’ll spend the rest of the film in a parka.

Terrell
09-11-09, 03:15 PM
Well, you know there's a problem when a filmmaker is more interested in stripping Kate Beckinsale out of her clothes, which is prime material for me, than creating a good film.

Still, I'd rather watch Kate Beckinsale strip than watch a great film anyday. I'm not going to pay eight bucks to do it though. The DVD can wait. This was a paycheck film for Kate. Plain and simple.

I had heard the underwear and shower scene Kate was forced to do was completely gratuitous, serving no purpose whatsoever.

If you want to see Kate in better work, watch Nothing But the Truth or Snow Angels, or wait for her next film Everybody's Fine with Deniro.

Saw this today.

I love Kate Beckinsale, but this movie was horrible. Probably one of the worst I've seen this year.

Could not believe that the main part of this damn movie revolved around:

Diamonds!!!

I was really confused what this movie wanted to be. I didn't know if it wanted to be an action movie or a serial killer thriller.

Regarding the deceptive advertising for this movie:

There were no creatures, No Science fiction elements and No out of the ordinary weather phenomenons other than a really heavy snow storm.

Alex O'Loughlin and Tom Skerritt were wasted in very thankless roles.

I would say the most exciting scene in this flick was the opening when the Russians were shooting at each other in the plane before it crashed.

The reveal at the end was horrible.

D+ (only giving it that because some of the special effects were okay and you got to see Kate in her sports bra and panties)

The frickin' TV spot told us that the publicity department didn't see a single thing in the movie that they could use in an ad campaign. So far as they were concerned, there was not one good line of dialogue, not one interesting shot, and not one exciting plot point. Occasionally that happens when publicity departments are given interesting but odd movies. Usually it happens with awful movies.

LOL! It's 30 seconds of a film that has a running time of an hour and fourty one minutes. How many lines of dialogue, how many shots, and how many plots points are there going to be in a 30 second TV spot. Like I said, thanks for letting me know that I don't have to actually watch a film. I can just watch TV spots. No offense intended, but your point is silly at best.

I'm not arguing the merits of the film. I always thought the film would be below average to mediocre at best, even if the original trailer made it look somewhat interesting. Outside of Beckinsale, the entire cast is incredibly suspect. The producer is suspect. The director and screenwriters for this film are the most suspect of all. Dominic Sena is as bad, if not worse than Stephen Sommers. So you're preaching to the choir about the quality of this film.

As for the studio having little to no faith, that's obvious. It was delayed for two years. We can argue about the reasons for the delay, but the fact that they delayed it at all speaks volumes. But don't make the argument that you can judge a film based on a TV spot.

You've got to be kidding me.

Let me guess. You judge films by 30 second TV spots? That figures.

I like my TV spots to be 30 secs and safe for all audiences.
But the movie it's advertising better damn well be 3hrs plus and rated R.

R? I prefer my movies NC-17

Did anyone actually see this movie? Seems like most of the comments are on the commercials. Seems like I'm the only one in this thread that actually saw it.

I saw it yesterday, thought it was pretty good. I mentioned it in the box office thread this week, it seems like unless a movie is widely considered to be 'great' then it gets pooped on. I had a good two hours at Whiteout. It was a bit derivative, but the scenery was great and I enjoyed the unique location. I will say the "mystery" was almost unbelievably easy to figure out. Normally I'm blindsided by most reveals because I'm usually just trying to enjoy the movie without picking it apart as I go, but this one was obvious from about a half hour in. And Beckinsdale looked... I can't even find the words, just phenomenal. I don't care that the shower scene was a double, it was her in the sports bra and panties that made up for the rest of the parkas and snow suits.

I saw this last night. Nothing special, but not a horrible movie at all.
For some reason the theater I went too had the air on freeze mode, which actually helped the film experience. I didn't know anything about the story, but figured out who was in on it withen 10 mins.

I had that same experience with 30 Days of Night...it was sooooo fucking cold in the theater that I'd swear it was an intentionally included experience to the film. *shudder* soooo cold.

Just finished this and just to say it took me 4 days due the fact that I kept falling asleep through the thing over and over.

Did you rent it or blind buy it?

^Given that the marketing makes it look like a supernatural thriller, I'm inclined to agree that they don't know what to do with this movie.

Trash can would be good.

It took me a few tries to get through it as well. Definitely not what I was hoping for.

Yeah but this (http://forums.superiorpics.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/2413040/1) sure makes the movie interesting.

I liked it. Not great but not terrible either.

Kate bending over in front of the camera in her panties sure didn't hurt either. :eyebrow:
