Please do not laugh. OK you can but first help me out. I have been watching dvds on my pc for a long time and have finally made the jump and bought a dvd player with a 5.1 decoder built-in. What I want to do is set up a 5.1 system with the speakers I have. I have 2 pairs of Altec Lansing ACS48s that I have mainly been using for 3D sound in games. I'm really poor and can't afford better speakers or a receiver. Would it be possible to just buy a cheapo center speaker and use the 4 satellites and sub to get 5.1? or better yet, can I use the television for the center speaker? Please help. Thank you.

There are some inexpensive "digital-ready" packages(speakers/reciever) out there that you might enjoy. Since you have a player with a DD decoder, these will work nicely.

You probably should have bought the Desktop 5.1 system from www.hifi.com which costs $300 and comes with a free dvd player. Your proposed setup really won't sound much better then t.v. output alone.
You would have to use the t.v. as a center speaker or else buy an amplified speaker for the center.
If you have a stereo t.v., then your best bet would be to use it for left and right, run a phantom center (no speaker), and use one pair of computer speakers for surround sound.
Upgrade as soon as possible. At the very least, try to get a powered sub. Even a crappy sub will add slam to movies and make them much more enjoyable. I've seen 8" subs for as little as $80 at best buy. Check ebay for good deals.
