Impact -- David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge -- 6/21 & 6/28

Starring:
David James Elliott
Natasha Henstridge
Steven Culp
James Cromwell

Trailer:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uylcyx3Obcw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Uylcyx3Obcw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Synopsis for Part 1:

Spoiler:

The end is nigh in this two-part sci-fi-drama about the moon on a collision course with Earth. In Part 1, a dead star strikes the moon during a meteor shower. At first, there seems to be no lasting damage, but soon puzzling things begin to happen (cell-phone disruptions, tidal anomalies), and scientists (David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge and Benjamin Sandler) grow increasingly concerned. Lloyd: James Cromwell. President Taylor: Steven Culp.

Anyone going to watch this tonight? Looks really really cheesy, but it could be fun. It looks like a mix of Deep Impact and Armageddon.

The DVR will watch it for me. Depending on how good/bad it is, and comments here, I'll decide whether to watch the recording. It sounds rather lame.

I have the DVR set -- although I am not expecting much.

Reviews are not surprising: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/41484

Set for the DVR .... I might actually watch this ..... saw one or two fairly decent reviews. I'll probably wait until I have both parts before watching (unless everyone here hates it a lot).

First 45 minutes were kind of slow with a lot of the relationsip stuff, but the rest felt solid. I will keep watching. I thought part 2 was tomorrow but it's a whole week away. Did they get the original moon distance to Earth wrong? On average, it's only 200k miles away.

It's vector prime all over again. The Yuuzhan Vong are invading.

A few things I noted.
James Cromwell was in Deep Imact. Guess he likes to be in asteroid movies.

David James Elliott & Steven Culp were both in JAG together. Would have been funnier if Katherine Belle (Mac) was in it instead of Natasha Henstridge & Chedwiggen (forgot the actor's name) was in it instead of James Cromwell. Woud have been a JAG reunion.

A piece of brown dwarf (I think the writers were inspired by the "Nemesis" fairy tale) is uber-dense? No, the idiot writers of this mini-series are uber-dense. They might have meant a neutron star but even then...bah, why bother.

The so-called "electromagnetic" effects would be hilarious if they weren't so sad. (And BTW the moon has no magnetic field! At least not one like the Earth's. It has pockets of magnetism but not enough to "interact" with Earth's magnetic field.) And they compound the idiocy by explaining things using utterly incomprehensible scientific mumbo-jumbo.

Come on for Christ's sake! How hard can it be to get the basic science right? One fucking phone call?

Shit, if they got the science right, there'd be no danger of the moon hitting earth, and the whole plot goes right in the crapper. You gotta suspend disbelief, man.

I saw some promos for this but after sitting through The Last Templar a month or so ago I just don't have the stomach for miniseries' any more.

I also saw they is a new Merlin miniseries, again I won't watch it but I guess Hollywood's to the point of remaking miniseries' now?

No, what I gotta do is stop watching shit like this. And ok, I'll admit that I only watched this because of Natasha.

They're scientists; they use kilometers.

The orbit is slightly elliptical, but averages about 240,000 miles or 385,000 km.

Re: Impact -- David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge -- 6/21 & 6/28

I think they said the moon was 900,000 km closer. Dunno if that was part of the 'slingshot' effect.

The gravity spikes thing is lame, of course. The disaster movies on the sci-fi channel at least kept the 'science' simple.

I think that was 90,000 km, but the science isn't real sound, so, ehh.

ok, now I do. Although I never watched any of the species movies, or pretty much anything else on her imdb listing other than commander in chief

Re: Impact -- David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge -- 6/21 & 6/28

Reminder:

Part 2 airs tonight at 9pm

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Conclusion. With only 39 days until the moon is to collide with Earth, the U.S. military and scientists Alex Kittner, Maddie Reese and Roland Emerson (David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge, Benjamin Sadler) propose competing plans to thwart it, and President Taylor (Steven Culp) must choose one. Meanwhile, Alex can't get in touch with his kids, and Roland can't get in touch with Martina (Florentine Lahme) as gravitational gyrations wreak havoc around the world. Lloyd: James Cromwell.

About half way done with Part 1 and it's cheesy, but fun.

Re: Impact -- David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge -- 6/21 & 6/28

It was a pretty decent time killer, a bit melodramatic, but fine. I see that NBC has a new one called Meteor in a couple of weeks. Will give that a try, as well.

EDIT: Laughed at the one shot of the fellow with the small handheld TV surrounded by neighbors, watching the president. I guess this took place before the digital transition. LOL.

Re: Impact -- David James Elliott, Natasha Henstridge -- 6/21 & 6/28

I'm 1/2 was through the second episode....

the editing is atrocious...

any discussion as to how the French dude got from, what, Germany to the US in split second time?

any clarification about that weird scene with the grandfather and the kids, lying next to that random dude who was knocked out next to him, who, when he awoke, said something like "thanks to your grandfather I have a splitting headache"? or something?
