ill be in vegas this weekend (fri-sun) and was wondering if its worth going to the rio and checking out the wsop (not going to play - $1000+ is way out of my price range for a tourney). ive never been to the rio/wsop nor visited much off the strip but i thought it might be fun since ill be there when the wsop is going on.
is it going to be packed with observers? will all the top pros be around? or is it super boring if you are not playing?

we stopped by last saturday at the request of mil and fil, they are big fans. i know very little about poker.
i thought it was interesting and had tons of questions for fil.
it was pretty crowded. the inlaws had some photo's taken with some people. they all seemed nice about it. they pointed out lots of pros, but i'm a poker dummy...i do remember mil getting giddy about daniel somebody...
i say go, it's free to get in

I almost went when I was there a couple weeks ago but never made it over to Rio. My guess is that it's pretty boring to watch live in person.

If your a fan of poker you should definately go. All the top name pros are there, and its not hard to find them, just look for the crowds. Take the free shuttle from Harrahs

I would think it'd be boring if not playing.

When I was in Vegas last summer, we saw a couple of pro's and famous people playing at the Bellagio. After the "Hey, isnt that so and so?" wears off, it really isnt that exciting.

went over there but i guess i went too early (didnt know the schedule at all) so i dont think any tourneys were going on quite yet but it was PACKED! holy shit. i couldnt go anywhere or see anyone. it was a mad house.
actually all of vegas was packed. i thought it might not be too busy because in june its so hot (100+) but they said its the busiest time of the year because of the WSOP. didnt even think of that before i went but it makes sense. the poker rooms were jumping everywhere - lots of good action.
had a great time and came back up a cool grand (and comped rooms). :)

I saw that ESPN's WSOP coverage this year will be all NLHE events with 13 of the 16 2-hour Tuesday blocks being Main Event coverage.

everything starts on espn july 28th
$40k NL
then the WSOP champions event
then that ante up for africa charity event
then it's all main event from there
it's pretty crystal clear that ESPN only wants to show hold 'em only and only if the final table will have nothing but name pros
i'll be there for the final 3 days as they play down for the november nine, though i'm going to watch the NBA summer league games and not the WSOP
even with name pros at the final table i can't imagine sitting in a chair and watching people play cards all day

Even if you only have a casual interest in poker, it's worth checking out if only for the spectacle.
I was over there last Friday evening and saw Chris Ferguson pose for a picture with some tourists and Greg Raymer signed autographs for 2 kids who were about 10-12 years old. I was amazed that they even knew who he was.
Tomorrow, the $50,000 HORSE tournament starts and that one is always worth a look because of the higher concentration of famous pro players.
