I cannot recommend this set highly enough, particularly at that price! If you like comedy at all, it's an easy blind buy!

I remember enjoying some Marx Brothers movies when I was younger.

Uneducated Marx Brothers question: Is a set of their more famous/recommended movies to watch?

Thanks

Sigh.... I knew there had to be a catch. Actual price is $24.99, not $25. Big difference in this case, because now I'll need to also buy something I don't want in order to get free shipping. :(

There are two Marx Bros. sets -- this and one from Warner Bros. Both are worth owning, but this one contains their most classic films.

This is a great set and the other one can be had for $20 at Costco right now.

The only thing I don't like about this set is that the spine breaks almost immediately upon opening it. Very fragile packaging. Classic films though.

if you own the individual films, there is no need for this set, but I cannot recommened the film highly enough, timeless comedy! I agree that the packaging is not great which is why I would recommend the individual films over the set. I only wish that someone would do a better clean up and restoration of these films which are a big part of cinematic history. as far as packaging goes, the other marx brothers set with thier later films is far superior.

I went ahead and ordered this set as a blind buy. Added Office Season 4 for $18.99 to get over the free shipping minimum requirement. Thanks again, OP! Looking forward to seeing these classic movies for the first time!

I eagerly purchased this when it first came out but immediately sold them again due to the terrible condition of the films. Shameful that Universal didn't restore these classics. Of course, if people willingly buy them in the pitiful shape they're in... why should they?

^ Good point, although for me, A/V quality is not very important, especially for titles like these. The story is about 90% of it for me, presentation 10%.

My understanding is that is the source material Universal owns, aquired in the Paramount purchase, and that is the best they can look unless a rare print is found somewhere.

Although the Coconuts is hardly reference material, I thought that the films were in pretty good condition considering their age. They apparently did do some work as they are a step up form the original releases by Image. I'd love a complete restoration but that's not very likely for more than a small number of films and probably won't be coming for Marx Brothers films for years, if ever. As it is, it's a bargain price for the best versions of these films that we are likely to see for a long time.

This set contains several of their funnier films, but doesn't contain two which possibly hold the most notoriety: "A Night at the Opera" and "A Day at the Races". Those are Warner titles, and available in this box set, also for a great price:

Here is an excerpt from Amazon which somewhat compares the two sets:
There will be a debate of which 2004 DVD collection of Marx Brothers films was better. This Universal release of the better known Paramount-produced films are the only ones starring all four brothers: Groucho, Chico, Harpo, and Zeppo. The Warner collection contains less-vital films, but is loaded with extras and commentaries. The Universal collection contains only 20 minutes of interviews from NBC's Today Show--interesting but short--with Harpo, Groucho, and Harpo's son Bill from the '60s and '70s.

Also, for those interested in Classic Comedy, the W.C. Fields Collection Vol. 2 also from Universal is only $23.99 right now.

But for those interested in that collection, the UK WC Fields Collection includes both part 1 and 2 sets plus extra films not in R1 for a much cheaper price.

It was. Be warned: the set does NOT include MRS. WIGGS or ALICE IN WONDERLAND (as listed on Amazon UK) but rather FOLLOW THE BOYS and something else. But it does include TILLIE AND GUS, MISSISSIPPI, MILLION DOLLAR LEGS, IF I HAD A MILLION, and THE BIG BROADCAST OF 1938. I've watched most of the films and the transfers are excellent.
