UPDATE:
Please be aware, we will be taking the site down for maintenance Wednesday, June 17th at 12PM.

This maintenance is to repair the recent database errors. Why shut down the site during the afternoon?

I understand you're talking about 2 hours (if indeed it will only be 2 hours), but can't this stuff be done in the wee-time of the evening when most of us are fast asleep?

In other words...

WHAT IN THE WORLD AM I SUPPOSED TO DO FOR TWO HOURS???

-For THEEK'S Sake!

I think they schedule it, while the time is inconvenient, it's when there are people around (ie more than 1) who can trouble shoot and/or fix if a major issue were to occur, versus doing it late when maybe one person stays late and if something happens, there's nobody else to help/troubleshoot/fix.

That's a good point. The IB employees also have lives and this is a relatively free site. I know that's not a popular reason, but I'm just throwing it out there as well. 2 hours of downtime in the middle of the day is a small price to pay for fixing the terrible slowness we've seen in the mornings on a regular basis.

^Tell it like it is, BROTHER!

Okay okay, I hear ya, and appreciate you all for taking time to respond (with the obvious exception of our in house comedian, Mr. Donald Phamward, who will (by the way) be opening the parking lot for the Wayne Newton Show in Vegas next week).

You know...

I can't count how many times we've had fix the forum over the last 10 years. It seems to me the moment they 'fix' it, that's when the new problems start and we're back where we began, and more and more and more maintenance is needed over and over again, and so it goes.

If the forum was a car I would have sold this turkey years ago!

(Maybe Geoff knew something he kept on the hush-hush. )

But in the end, and For it has been said:

'Such is life on the Internets.'

You're correct that we do schedule it, and while it's never optimal to do maintenance in the middle of the day, we end up locked into certain times-- not because of our schedules, we have people here around the clock. We have to schedule around other projects. For this specific maintenance, there was one specific person who I wanted to do a big part of it. He had a lot of other things scheduled and this was one of those windows.

As forums get bigger, they hit different walls regarding expandability. A site with 50,000 posts gets new problems when it hits 100,000 posts and then again at 200,000 posts, and so on. It's a constant struggle.

This latest move should give the site more growing room.

Yeah, I was just gonna say that as long as they keep all the data, scalability would be a constant issue.

IB-D: Thanks for taking me to school!

Hey! You guys have to know that I sincerely appreciate all the work Y'ALL put into this place to keep it up & running.

With that said...

If anything ever really seriously happened to DVD Talk, first I'd FREAK OUT (literally) for sure, & then (once they caught me) they'd have to increase my medication. That would only lead me to begrudgingly join some lesser, trailer trash, low life, loser forum and while sitting there rocking back & forth in a bored, drooling stooper, I'd daydream of the 'good ol' days' and what it used to feel like belonging to the BEST DAMN WEBSITE FOR DVD INFORMATION EVER CREATED!!! :(

( )

Presently, the Forum seems to be reaching LIGHT SPEED*, and I really LIKEY-LIKEY!!!

(*...or 'Plaid', whichever is faster.)

THANK YOU, EVERYBODY!!!

The fix we did last week wasn't perfect, but it got us closer to where we need to be. We have two more things that need to be done, and once they are, things should be a-ok. While they're far from perfect right now, for most of the time the site should be preforming well.

That's correct, there is an hour and a half window that the site's affected, 7:45-9:15am Eastern. We know why, and a fix is in the works. The rest of the time the site should be pretty stable.

Sorry if this has been posted, but the last page number link in some threads are to taking me back to the 2nd before last page instead of the last. It was happening in the "Dead Sno" thread in Movies and another one that I can't remember visiting right after it.

i.e. 34 is the last page but clicking it takes me to 33, but still stays 34 is the last page.
