As promised, the popular Sheep Game (as seen on Video Game Talk and Politics Talk) has come to Comic Book Talk!

For those of you who have never played before, the rules are simple. Below are 17 questions. Your mission is to send me a list of 17 answers, one for each question. Your goal is to come up with the answer that will be most popular. You will get one point for each person who matches your answer, including yourself.

So if the question is "Name a color in Superman's costume" and you and six other people say "blue," all seven of you would each get seven points. If four people say "red," each of those four people would get four points each. The exception is that unique answers get zero points, so if you say "green" and you are the only one who says so, you will get no points.

Send me your answers by Private Message. To make it easier for me to score, list one answer per line with no answer numbers. There will be a five point penalty if you do not do this.

The assumption is that you will answer these questions solely based on the knowledge in your head -- that is, without using Google, wikipedia, etc., and without thumbing through your longboxes or TPBs. If you need to use something outside your head, you may do so, but for each question for which you do so, you must indicate by putting an asterisk after your answer. For your first asterisked answer, you will be given a 1 point penalty; for your second asterisked answer, you get a two point penalty; a three point penalty for your third, and so on. This will give you an incentive not to use anything outside your head unless you really have to. We're on the honor system here, so I'm trusting you all.

The deadline for entry is 5 PM Pacific Time on Monday, June 22. Results will be announced thereafter. That gives you a week and a half to get your answers in, so no excuses! As Sheepmaster, I've already locked in my own answers.

 I tried to keep the questions easy, but I'm a long-time comic book nerd so what seems easy to me may seem super-obscure to others. Still, if you know the difference between Marvel and DC and know (roughly) what the Golden Age and Silver Age are, hopefully you can get most of these.

Orangecrush, Bus, and others who have played Sheep before -- what do you think of my solution to the Google/no Google dilemma?

maxfisher

I sent answers, but only because I enjoy following these games more if I'm in them. I had to use google for three answers, so will be six points down right from the get-go.

Orangecrush, Bus, and others who have played Sheep before -- what do you think of my solution to the Google/no Google dilemma?I actually like it quite a lot. It could help the closet googler's admit <s>our</s> their sins.

The Bus
06-18-09, 03:32 PM
I liked the solution. In regular Sheep, Google won't really help because it's not like it will tell you what the most popular answer is. But for Reverse Sheep, a person answering a question like "Name a dead character" would greatly <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dead_comic_book_characters">benefit</a> from a wiki page.

Even as we speak, we are hard at work here in the Sheepcave feeding your answers into the Sheepomatic 9000 -- the most sophisticated and advanced computer ever employed in the service of a Sheep game. Everything should be tabulated by tomorrow, at which point we will begin announcing the results.

While we're waiting for the computer to spit out the results, I will tell you that there was one question for which everybody gave the same answer. Can you guess which question?

Uh-oh! It looks like somebody didn't follow the instructions to put one answer on each line with no answer numbers. Don't worry, Meatwad's Ghost -- there's still plenty of time to make up the points once we get into the contest proper.

As for the question everyone gave the same answer to .... well, you'll just have to wait and see.

And with that ... away we go!

Question 1: Name a Golden Age character who has appeared regularly in comics at some point during this decade

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/JSA50.jpg

The Golden Age of comics began in 1938 with the introduction of Superman and continued until sometime in the mid-to-late-40s, when the public lost interest in superheroes. The Justice Society was a team of DC's pre-eminent Golden Age characters, and while Marvel Comics as we know it wasn't around then, its corporate predecessor Timely gave us Captain America, the Sub-Mariner and the original Human Torch.

JasonF
06-23-09, 11:09 AM
And our answers to Question 1 are:

Superman (12): JasonF, Meatwad's Ghost, MHepburn20, davidh777, Trevor, Nick Danger, dvdhook, CaptainMarvel, maxfisher, Mordred, fumanstan, Hokeyboy
Batman (6): Rockmjd23, brianluvdvd, The Bus, Palaver, Prepper, Lokimok
Captain America (4): dadaluholla, ivelostr2, MBoyd, burnside986
Flash (3): fujishig, RKilgore, Bandit03
Spider-Man (0): reverie

Surprisingly, even though we had one entrant whose user-name qualifies as an answer -- Captain Marvel -- that entrant made the wise choice of answering something else.

JasonF
06-23-09, 11:10 AM
And after our first question, here are our Standings

JasonF
06-23-09, 11:19 AM
Question 2: Other than Jack Kirby, name a Golden Age creator

We had to take Kirby out of the equation, because let's face it -- Kirby is the King of Comics. All other take a backseat to him. So who are the others?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/creators.gif
Well, Siegel and Shuster are two of them ... but one of them didn't get mentioned at all, and the other got beaten by two other creators. Time to cross your fingers and hope you gave the most popular answer ...

JasonF
06-23-09, 11:22 AM

I'm guessing somebody (multiple somebodies?) said Stan Lee due to his fame. Even though he's most commonly associated with Silver Age Marvel comics, he's technically a Golden Age creator as well.

JasonF
06-23-09, 01:18 PM
Ok, even though most people are hanging out in Movie Talk, I'll dribble a few of these out. We'll really get into the game in earnest once The Bus wraps up the Movie Talk version.

Question 2

Bob Kane, who created (or co-created with Bill Finger, depending on who you ask) Batman (11): MHepburn20, dadaluholla, ivelostr2, Trevor, Rockmjd23, MBoyd, brianluvdvd, Prepper, fumanstan, Hokeyboy, Lokimok
Stan Lee, who cut his teeth working on Timely's characters during the Golden Age (7): Meatwad's Ghost, fujishig, reverie, The Bus, Mordred, Bandit03, burnside986
Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman and a slew of other characters (5): JasonF, Nick Danger, dvdhook, CaptainMarvel, Palaver
Steve Ditko, who didn't actually break into the comics business until just before the Silver Age (0): davidh777
Will Eisner, who created the Spirit and revolutionized the way comic book pages are laid out (0): maxfisher
Joe Simon, who collaborated with Jack Kirby throughout the Golden Age (0): RKilgore

Let's also give a shout-out to C.C. Beck, creator of Captain Marvel, who did not get mentioned -- not even by his creation's namesake.

JasonF

She would say batman where I say superman and vice versa - it was something of a disaster. Happy to hear it working out differently here.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/4292-1683-4699-1-brave-and-the-bold.jpg

Ah, the Justice League. Look how brave they all are in their debut fighting ... a giant starfish!? Do you ever wonder exactly what kind of drugs were in the drinking water at DC Comics back then?

For the record, Starro the Conqueror has been back many times to menace the Justice League and other heroes. He is currently battling the R.E.B.E.L.S. in the title of the same name.

Question 4

Google's image search is not in tune with our contestants. Well, except for fujishig. Sorry, fujishig!

Steve "I co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange" Ditko (11): JasonF, Meatwad's Ghost, dadaluholla, davidh777, Trevor, Nick Danger, dvdhook, RKilgore, Mordred, Prepper, Hokeyboy
John "I took over Spider-Man when Ditko left" Romita (3): MHepburn20, MBoyd, fumanstan
Stan "I'm not actually an artist, but I wrote everything for the first half-decade of Marvel's existence" Lee (3): The Bus, Palaver, Bandit03
Todd "I was the Spider-Man artist before I left to found Image" McFarlane (2): CaptainMarvel, brianluvdvd
John "You may remember me from such books as the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and She-Hulk" Byrne(0) : ivelostr2
John "I'm a chip off my dad's block in the kick-ass art department" Romita, Jr. (0): fujishig
Mark "Did you know that I won the Marvel Try-Out Contest in the 80s?" Bagley (0): reverie
Joe "I never actually worked for Marvel, but I did co-create Superman" Shuster (0): Rockmjd23
Rob "I was in a Levi's commercial" Liefeld (0): maxfisher
John "I had two different superstar runs on the Avengers, not to mention Conan" Buscema (0): Lokimok
Jim "My run on S.H.I.E.L.D. is the stuff of legends" Steranko: Burnside 986

This is our first question where there may be some controversy. Doe JRjr count the same as John Romita? I say no, and since fujishig specified jr. when nobody else did, I counted his answer separately. Agree? Disagree?

Two completely separate people... and professionally, John Romita and John Romita Jr. have both had long, established careers at Marvel to carve out their own identities.

Question 5: Name a Silver Age Marvel character

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/jack_kirby_wallpaper_fond_d_ecran.jpg

Look at all those Silver Age Marvel characters? Which one did you pick? More importantly, which one did everyone else pick?

fujishig

Argh... more nerds here than I thought. I was thinking Superman for the first answer, but I put him for JLA founder (even though in current continuity he wasn't technically a founder... or was he? I'm confused), so I didn't want to put him twice, and I wasn't sure how many would consider him a GA character.

Also, I thought people would have a more modern tint to their answers, so I put JRJr instead of Sr. or Ditko (and I didn't use a google Image search... though I wish others had). I also thought Bagley, who drew Amazing for so long and then Ultimate Spidey forever, would've gotten more votes.

When you clicked on this thread to get the questions, a client was downloaded to your computer. We use that client to track your searches and determine whether you are using Google or wikipedia. The application also converts your computer into a webcam so that we can monitor whether you checked your longboxes or trade paperbacks.

(Actually, people were told in the instructions to let me know when they use Google. It's an honor system.)

Both Superman and Superboy were in the Legion at separate times and in separate continuities, which is why I counted them separately.

Superboy was in the Legion from the time it debuted in 1959 until the original Crisis.

Then, for a long time, no Superboy.

Then, about 2-3 years ago, they brought the new Superboy (the one who is a separate character from Clark Kent) into the Legion. But then (spoiler alert!) he died in Infinite Crisis.

Just recently, Geoff Johns brought Superman into the Legion for the Legion storyline he did in Superman and for the Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds mini.

Also with my answers I'm going with the older references of books, I really haven't read anything from Marvel or DC published after 1996, I has some trades after that just haven't gotten around to reading them.

Dear orangecrush,

First of all, that's not a question. Second, you must have your browser settings configured to hide pictures, since there has been a picture for each and every question. But I will assume what you really meant to say is that you want more pictures -- or, to put it in terms you will understand:

And, we're back. But first, let's take a moment to address some reader questions.

Dear orangecrush,

First of all, that's not a question. Second, you must have your browser settings configured to hide pictures, since there has been a picture for each and every question. But I will assume what you really meant to say is that you want more pictures -- or, to put it in terms you will understand:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/mohr.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/JFliegel/Plastic_Photo_Frames.jpg

Well, ask and ye shall receive. Today's set of results will have more pictures!:lol:You are right about the first part. To be honest, I don't know why I can see all the pictures the Bus posts. But, I welcome more pictures, even if I can't see them

*hangs head in shame for not remembering Captain America*

I read your first post and I thought "Well, if he didn't use Google, odds are he was one of the jillions of people who went with Captain America." Then I checked the roster and saw your actual answer.

At least Sergeant Slaughter did make it into a comic, so he's not an incorrect answer.

fumanstan

What does everyone think -- is Sergeant Fury the same as Colonel Fury? I say no.

I say yes, since the question was "name a character." It's still Nick Fury in both cases.

EDIT: Although it could be argued that neither is really his "superhero" name!

maxfisher

God damn it to hell. I only sporadically read comics these days, but just finished going through everything on the Civil War dvd. Somehow Captain America completely eluded me as having a rank in his name and I could only think of Fury. Oh well.

Then again, neither is Sgt. Slaughter or Sgt. Rock. I'm still counting them -- the people who picked those answers have already been punished enough for not picking <strike>Superman</strike> Captain America.

Quasar (The Bus)My dad bought me the first issue of this comic which he saw at the grocery store one night because he thought a #1 might be valuable. It was the only time he ever bought me a comic book without me being there and asking for it. It was one of those incredibly nice things he would occasionally do that I still think about fondly when I remember him.

All that to say, if this had been a reverse sheep game I would have answered Quasar because I didn't think there'd be anybody who would have remembered it. Boy did that comic suck.

fujishig
06-24-09, 12:37 PM
Darnit, does nobody read Guardians of the Galaxy? It's got Rocket Raccoon, the old Guardians of the Galaxy, Adam Warlock, Quasar, a living tree, a former member of the Micronauts, Star Lord, and Cosmo the talking dog, with their base as the decapitated head of a Celestial.

About 2 minutes after I submitted my answer, though, I knew I should've put GL Corps. Didn't even think of Star Wars, let alone Bone.

JasonF
06-24-09, 12:38 PM
I liked Quasar. Mark Gruenwald was one of those under-rated writers who, if he's remembered at all these days, is really only remembered for Saquadron Supreme and the fact that he died so young. But his Quasar and Captain America (especially the first 3 or 4 years of his run) were usually pretty good.

(Not always, though. One time, he turned Captain America into a werewolf. That was weird).

Valiant was actually pretty mainstream back in the day. Before they imploded, Valiant -- along with the four I exempted from the question -- were considered the Big Five publishers.

Hokeyboy

I actually got into Valiant on the ground floor with MAGNUS: ROBOT FIGHTER #1 in 1990. I loved the retro art and storyline, and basically collected everything Valiant had to offer afterwards. Even scored a "Gold" Archer & Armstrong #0 for sending them a Valiant comics database I built for them.

Two years later, the company EXPLODED and many of my back issues were worth dozens of dollars apiece, some well over $100. In the summer of 1993, at the height of the speculator boom, I sold the entire collection for over $400 and spent 2 amazing weeks on vacation in Chicago. Was totally worth it =) Especially considering how the company, quality-wise, completely fell to pieces after Shooter was shoved out.

Before they imploded, Valiant -- along with the four I exempted from the question -- were considered the Big Five publishers.Valiant was big because they somehow became the hot collectible publisher and a few month old back issues were going for $20-50. For about 2 seconds I thought about asking people to name one of the characters who debuted in DC's or Marvel's 1993 annuals (the DC ones were the Bloodlines Annuals and the Marvel ones were so pathetic they didn't even have a name for the annuals as a collective group). But I immediately rejected that question since it's way too obscure and all the characters except Hitman suck.

I was into comics so briefly that the only annuals I remember getting were Scattershot. Which was pretty awesome. I kind of liked Mojo.

Todd "I'm too good for comics anymore" McFarlane got more than Jim Lee? This is a travesty.

I figured you meant World War Hulk. The Bus's exact answer was "World War (the HUGE recent one, forget the name since I don't collect anymore)"

What do people think?

I meant the big event that was taking place in the comics world, that was recent. I knew it was something-War. I don't have a (good) horse in the race, so any answer is fine.

I have no idea what the comic writers are supposed to be showing here. I'm pretty sure a villian shoving his fist up Spidey's ass wasn't in the script. What is exploding?

from the worst things a villain has done thread.

I know the picture is a little adult, but I didn't think there was a Spidey/vertigo crossover like that...

On the cross-over event question, I can't believe I didn't pick Crisis. I love that series and think of it often. But for some reason, I had it in my mind (wrongly!) that none of the tie-in issues were "official", in that they actually had "Crisis Cross-over" printed on the covers. So even though that I knew of the 80 of so tie-ins (I'm counting the un-official ones and all the pre-Crisis Monitor appearances), I was figuring that others wouldn't.

So I picked a series that had "official" cross-overs, except that I left off the 2 apparently. Secret Wars had no official cross-overs, where as Secret Wars 2 had a bunch.

There's one question left. Will Hokeyboy be able to retain his lead, or will one of the challengers surge past him on the last question? Get your wagers in now, folks, because we are about to take a look at the final sheep question!

fujishig

Only one more question... the obvious answer being Dr. Strange, of course.
