For those that missed this complete megaset file cabinet from A&E that has been OOP for a while and very expensive elsewhere, now you can finally get it at a reasonable price.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B002BLNGTS/

Hopefully the 25-disc count is a misprint since it was originally 35. Otherwise, some would be flippers.

Looks like a re-release. Accordingly, it should be available elsewhere for even less.

On the one hand, I'm ecstatic about the opportunity to acquire this, having been too broke to get it previously. On the other hand, did it have to be so close to the G.I. Joe and Transformers series releases? Hopefully, they will all be in large supply and in print long enough for me to pick up all three.

I never thought this would happen so I bit the $200 bullet at NBC.com a while back. It still shows in stock there.

The current link shows a file cabinet at Amazon but who knows with their repackaging. Mine came complete w/cabinet from NBC.com and 35 discs (even though their site says 34 discs...

Loved this show back when it aired, but missed most of it due to working nights and no DVR at the time. Been waiting for a rainy month to go thru the set. I have a feeling that it may go down as my favorite (recent history) series of all time, although Six Feet Under will be tough to beat.

I thin I prefer the Wire, but both shows are among the best shows of any kind ever to be made.

I haven't seen The Wire yet but Homicide certainly has some of the finest writing and performing that you can get within the boundaries of network TV.

Tom Fontana is a genius.

St. Elsewhere (1983-1988) -> Homicide (1993-1999) -> Oz (1997-2003)

Also, a great unknown show, The Beat (2000) which ran for 13 episodes bun they only aired 6 of them. Hoping for a DVD set someday...

I'm sure someone will direct you to check eBay or Amazon's marketplace, and I'm sure someone else will chime in that this is a violation of some kind of by-rule for posting in this sub-forum. For my part, I'll just say that if you're going to unload it, you better hope that your prospective buyer is unaware of the fact they can pre-order the forthcoming re-issue for a little more than $100 on Amazon. The new release lists for about $150, so unless there's an actual difference between releases, it's doubtful you'll do better than that.

Note: Amazon has the forthcoming set listed as a "re-package," suggesting that perhaps this won't be identical to the previous issue. They also have it at 25 discs instead of 35. These could just be errors in the listing, though.

Tom Fontana was half of the Homicide equation; David Simon was the other half, and the Wire is his baby. Do yourself a favor and check it out -- if you like Homicide, it's hard to see how you won't like the Wire.

I will do that. Next time it shows up in the GB for a great price at Amazon. :)

Best cop show on basic cable ever. It's not even in the same league as The Wire. Although, it is the closest thing in terms of the innovation for the genre on basic cable. What hurts the show is the last few seasons are awful. I passed on the box set originally b/c I know I would never watch the last few seasons. I may pick this up if I can find it really cheap.

Homicide in its heyday was 10 times the show that the Wire ever was.

Well, The Wire is definitely the better show when it comes to consistency and quality from start to finish, but I think Homicide had higher highs. At its best, Homicide produced some absolutely perfect, self-contained hours of television. Unfortunately, yes, the quality started to slip in Season 6 (but still had some great moments and episodes), and Season 7 was sadly mostly awful.

I got it in a sale Deep Discount had a couple of years ago where they had a buy 1 get 1 free sale. I got 2 copies of the Homicide set and sold one on half.com and wound up only paying like $30 for the copy I kept, which was awesome.

I recommend this set. The best show ever put on TV (The Wire is #2, but that is a cable show).

Also, this set has the L&O crossover episodes and the movie. The movie is OOP and the L&O crossovers have not be released on L&O sets yet.

I like many others got this set dirt cheap (if I recall, I have like $40 in Reward Zone coupons, so my set was pretty low).

I did the same thing, except I sold the extra on Amazon. Still haven't gotten around to watching this yet. I also have the Wire series set sitting on my shelf, unwatched. I probably should start watching them soon.

But yeah, I have a few stories like that too......

Even worse, it was an upgrade from the individual season sets -- my wife was lamenting the amount of space our DVDs take up, so over the past year or so, we've traded in our individual season sets for complete series where we could. So I actually paid that much for two crossover episodes and a TV movie (plus some more compact packaging).

Oh well. It's only money.

Me too - except I had a coworker that wanted it too, so we each got one for (I think it was) 67.00.

And to tag onto the other debate: IMO, The Wire is the best show ever. But it never would've happened if it wasn't for Homicide paving the way (and The Sopranos for upping the ante on cable).

But Homicide is a wonderful show, and I can't imagine liking one, but not the other.

I'm so excited to see that this set is coming back into print. The neurotic side of me wants to wait to own the movie before embarking on watching the entire series, but I'm sure it's just a fun little coda anyway. I absolutely loved Fontana's Oz and Simon's The Wire (and wished I had watched this one first), so I'm thrilled to own and finally watch this one.

There is a made-for-TV movie that was made after the series was canceled and it should only be viewed after you've watched every episode. It was available on the original complete set so hopefully it will be on this one.

JckRbbtSlim referred to it as a "coda," and since lisadoris has already explained that the movie follows the series, think of this as your new word for the day.

co-da, n. 3. a concluding section or part, esp. one of a conventional form and serving as a summation of preceding themes, motifs, etc., as in a work of literature or drama. (I omitted the other definitions.)

Also, it might interest you to know that prior to creating the series, David Simon spent a year with the Baltimore police doing research. He published a book containing his observations, Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. The series wasn't a literal adaptation (you won't find anyone with the same name, for starters), but if you really want to get to where this series and The Wire originated for Simon, this is where you should go. I think it's out of print at the moment, but it shouldn't be too hard to find at a used bookstore or online.

I blind-bought this show a while ago. I have tried to start-up twice; the lack of closed captioning or subtitles is making this impossible. I'm thinking about selling my set and forgetting about ever trying to watch this show. I am having trouble understanding more than 50% of the dialogue.

It won't. The cost to close caption and re-author 120+ episodes is astronomical and the re-release will never sell enough copies to come close to recouping that HUGE expense.

Yes. I have a hearing loss of about 40% in my left ear. This is only a problem with DVDs and Blu-rays. I understand close to 100% of the dialogue on television and in theaters. With DVDs and Blus--unless I'm watching with someone else--I use the subtitles as a crutch. With a typical DVD/BD, I probably understand 75% of the dialogue without aid. I'm understanding less than 50% with Homicide.

That does suck. I know that there is alot of fast paced dialogue in Homicide, and can see where one might have trouble. I havent watched the seasons in a while, but I too tend to watch them with the subtitles on, if they were available. Is the issue that the discs dont have subtitles NOR captioning?
