It's pretty damn close isn't it? I can't see this being a coincidence.
Just made the NY Post (http://blogs.nypost.com/tv/archives/2009/06/conan_obrien.html)

Video from Conan..

No way that's a coincidence, especially with the angle of the sun rays and water pattern. That is absolutely awesome.

This is just some good photoshopping, those mario images come from different games.

Yeah, I was wondering how someone thought of grabbing all those images from various Mario levels.

Yeah I mean of course it is photoshopped, but you don't think it is at least inspired?

How would someone even know which images to grab, unless they already knew which images supposedly inspired his set. From that image, I wouldn't doubt it's inspired by the Mario games.

They're just shapes, in three days I have no doubt that somebody could collect all the proper images to construct that Mario level collage, just a forced coincidence.

They may not even be screen grabs but a recreation made to look like Mario levels.

I didn't need any more reasons to love Conan.

hah well if it gets enough press I am sure he will address it.

No way. Look at the randomness of the clouds. No one could just magically think that odd shape up for a backdrop.

That doesn't look like Mario. There's nothing in the design that screams "Mario"

http://kotaku.com/5279071/nintendo-thinks-conan-obrien-mario-homage-is-great

"That's great," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said as he looked at it for the first time during his interview with Kotaku.

"We know that he is a fan of what we do, and we're thrilled to have him as a passionate Nintendo fan. Maybe we'll have to go play some Wii Sports Resort as well."

So, no cease and desist, Reggie?

"No. For Conan, we'll let that one slide."

But if a pre-school paints Mario on the side of their building, an entire team of lawyers is dispatched.

Link is removed. What did he say?

JohnSlider

He just said that some people have claimed the back drop looks like levels from Super Mario Bros, he said it was ridiculous. At that point the Mario backgrounds appeared behind Conan and the Mario music played, and he stood there surprised, and then hopped up and down a few times and it made the Mario jump sound.
