Lords of Chaos (2019, Åkerlund) S: Rory Culkin, Emory Cohen, Jack Kilmer, Sky Ferreira, Valter Skarsgård
Could possibly be the dumbest idea ever..
Varg is no longer in prison so that part of the story is wrong.
Here's the Wikipedia for those who don't know who that is..
Jackson Rothbone:
Varg Vikernes:
Jackson Rathbone, the teen heartthrob from "Twilight", has reportedly agreed to play Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh) — the former BURZUM mastermind who is currently serving a Norwegian prison term for the August 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) and setting fire to three churches — in the upcoming movie "Lords Of Chaos".
Here's the Wikipedia for those who don't know who that is..
Based on Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind's book of the same name, the film depicts true events and revolves around the black metal sub-culture that spawned a wave of murders and church arsons across Norway in the early 1990s.
Making his English-language debut with "Lords Of Chaos" will be hot Japanese director Sion Sono. (director of Suicide Circle, Noriko's Dinner Table and Strange Circus) (!!!)
Stuart Pollok of Los Angeles-based Saltire Entertainment, Ko Mori of Eleven Arts and Oh Jungwan of Korea's Bom Productions are producing the film, which starts shooting in Norway in mid-September.
Three years ago, plans had been underway to make the book into a film. However, the producers lacked funding at the time.
Now, however, with funding underway, producer Pollok is in Cannes to promote the project.
Why did you choose to make this film?
"It is a fascinating topic, a great visual world to depict, and a fun portrayal of Norway," Pollok told Dagbladet.no. "Black metal is possibly the largest cultural export of Norway in the past twenty years."
In his manuscript to Norway's Hans Fjellestad, Pollok revealed that the film will be based on actual events.
It will be a story of youth and youthful energy, said Pollok, but he emphasised that the film will fall under the teen film category, and that it will be a psychological horror film.
The events that came to pass are interesting and fascinating, said Pollok.
Pollok confirmed to Dagbladet.no that he will also be casting Norwegian actors.
Svein Andresen of Film Camp, which is responsible for the Norwegian recording locations and production, stated "What happened has been widely known to the public for a long time, and is now known worldwide. This was a gang that declared war on society. Actually, it is not surprising that Norwegian filmmakers have picked up on this piece of history."
Rathbone plays Jasper in Summit's "Twilight" series and is currently shooting the lead role in M. Night Shyamalan's $140-million "The Last Airbender" for Paramount Pictures.
In a 2004 statement posted on the Burzum.org web site, Vikernes slammed the "Lord Of Chaos" book as "a pool of mud," insisting that "the vast majority of all the statements made in this book are either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best. This includes the statements attributed to me!" He went on to say, "This book serves only one single purpose and that is to create a myth around my name and to mystify me. If that was their objective they have indeed succeeded with their work. Well, the book seems to have served one other purpose too. The authors have managed to fill the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies. What could have been a righteous revolt has been made into some pathetic, embarrassing, brain-dead, impotent and traditional poser-culture best exemplified by bands like DIMMU BORGIR — and indeed VENOM!"

How exactly will this film be a "fun portrayal of Norway"?

I was wondering that too.
I did read the book "Lords of Chaos" years ago, and I'll admit that the antics of the whole black metal "inner circle" that existed in Norway at the time could make an interesting film. I'd watch it.
Didn't know that Vikernes finally got out of jail. What about Faust? (original Emperor drummer jailed for a different murder)

I love my Black Metal but this is such a terrible idea. Have to agree with you LickTheABCs.
I'm pretty sure they'll leave out that Varg was associated with NSBM (National Socialist Black Metal) early on and while in prison.

This movie has the potential to be either the greatest thing ever, or completely horrible. Kind of like Black Metal itself.

I know Ulver want nothing to do with the Black Metal scene now, so I don't see them being involved.. but if they do.. It'd leave me speechless.
ULVER TO COMPOSE SOUNDTRACK FOR FILM?
However, all this controversy from the black metal fanbase may be consoled by the nature of director Sion Sono's previous films.
Sono has made several films that have been both controversial and have had artistic value. 2002's "Suicide Club", for instance, recounts the tale of 54 Japanese schoolchildren who committed mass suicide by throwing themselves in front of a train.
The director has now completed the writing of the script for the film "Lords of Chaos". The Norwegian band Ulver has been called upon to compose the soundtrack for the film, and band member Kristoffer Rygg is not as negatively orientated about the project as many of his black metal colleagues.
- I think that the book is a good mixture of music journalism, so-called "true crime", and the history of ideas. I read the script three years ago, and since this is a featured film based on actual events, it is dramatised with supernatural and occult elements. The full package. But now it has come into the hands of completely new people, so I really have no idea about what exactly this film is going to be like," says Rygg to Dagbladet.no.

What is more shocking thsn "Lords Of Chaos" is that someone is allowing M. Night Shyamalan to make a $140 million dollar film after that masterpiece The Happening.

Ulver could score a 3-hour film of Varg taking a dump and I'd be there for the first showing. My interest level just hit its peak!

Have you heard Ulver's other score, for the film "Svidd Neger"? If you haven't check it out. It's awesome. Some of their best stuff since "Nattens Madrigal" IMO.

Well I know nothing about that Varg guy, but since Sion Sono is directing, it should at least be wickedly strange and messed up. Hopefully in a good way.

I didn't think this would generate enough interest to warrant its own thread, but here's the trailer for the upcoming "Until the Light Takes Us" documentary on the Norweigan black metal movement of the early 90's. I'll def be seeing it in theaters.

Until the Light Takes Us was playing in Chicago for a while over the summer. I thought about seeing it, but a few friends said it wasn't very good; downright bad even. I always feel bad when a documentary on a niche subject misses the mark, since the chances of anyone else getting the green light to tackle it will have 10x the struggle based on the shortcomings of the "first" film.
Here's hoping Lords of Chaos will deliver. Ok, so I know it's going to be complete trash. "Hot director's" first English film? Check. Miscast heartthrob lead actor? Check. "Teen Horror Movie" misuse of source material? Check.
If this thing turns out to be good, I'll buy everyone in this thread a cassette copy of Mayhem's "Pure Fucking Armageddon."

Opens in 7 days Theatrically with an On-Demand Release of 2/22/19.
I'm still on the fence about it but I have a friend that really wants to see it, so I will probably check it out.
The Alamo Drafthouse (in San Francisco, CA) has had this on their Calendar for weeks but tickets are still unavailable to purchase. Not sure what's going on there.

I'm very familiar with the whole sordid story, and have been very curious (and somewhat dreading) how this would turn out. The fact that the director was a founding (although very brief) member of Bathory is a good sign. But seeing Rory Culkin as Euronymous in the trailer seems kind of weird. Anyway, I will totally see this film.

This never played theatrically anywhere near me, but it's now available for digital rental or purchase, so I'm going to check it out tonight. I'll be coming into this as someone who read the book years ago and was listening to these bands back in the 90's, so I'm not sure how this will stand up for me, I'm very curious and am hoping for the best. On a metal forum, someone made the comment that while Rory Caulkin looks nothing like Euronymous, he does look quite similar to Fenriz (of Mayhem contemporaries Darkthrone, he also briefly appears in this film portrayed by a different actor) and oh my god, he really does.

Now that it's available on Digital, I'll probably rent it this weekend and watch it with a few friends who have been curious about it.
