Mainstream movies playing in IMAX theaters?
It seems more and more big action movies are being shown in IMAX the first week or two of their release. Star Trek currently and Transformers 2 will be, for example.
Were parts of these movies shot exclusively with IMAX cameras, like The Dark Knight was, or is this just the same movie projected on a bigger screen in an attempt to make more money? If its the latter, is it really worth it? Is the aspect ratio kept intact?
The last movie I saw in IMAX was Beowulf 3-D.

Generally, yes, you see a difference thanks to the size, there are requirements for the video which keeps the quality in check, and the sound system usually kicks the shit out of regular theater sound systems. If it's worth the extra cash or not is a personal preference.
The Dark Knight is the only motion picture with actual sequences shot in IMAX. Ironically, these would not display correctly on the newer IMAX Digital screens (bars added to the sides).

^ Transformers 2 will also have key action scenes shot in IMAX/70mm cameras (like The Dark Knight). In terms of misreading the thread title, I know that IMAX-Digital screens, because 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' underperformed, can show DLP movies. I saw 'Final Destination 3 on the King of Prussia screen and while it wasn't an official DMR'rd IMAX presentation, the film was still a blast - loud and in 'your face'

The IMAX Digital screens are just two Christie 2k projectors running on top of one another, which is likely why it's able to run standard DLP just fine.

^ oh no doubt, I'm sure the theatres that have such systems are happy to actual show a different movie the time in between IMAX features and when a IMAX feature is not selling tickets - why get stuck showing an IMAX film that no one wants to see?

Giles, how would you rate the KoP IMAX screen? It's the only non-museum screen I've been to and I think it's fantastic. Bit of a drive for me (1+ hour) but worth it for the right movies.

I have a local AMC with an IMAX screen. That's where I saw Beowulf and a couple other movies I forget. It doesn't seem any different than the one at the Henry Ford Museum.

well it's larger than AMC Hoffman's IMAX-Digital screen - the screen isn't on the very large size, but it's more than adaquate, I'd favour KoP over Hoffman any day.
my favourite IMAX theatre though is the Wachovia IMAX Theatre/Marbles Kid's Museum in Raleigh NC, since they do a great job scheduling both educational IMAX films and the Hollywood releases.
The Select Medical IMAX Theater/Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts in Harrisburg, PA also is high on my list.
My only beef with the Smithsonian IMAX screens, is that very few of the Hollywood films make it over to the two Mall screens, and they can cancel (and do) screenings at the drop of a hat. Udvar-Hazy in Chantilly was unwisely IMO not equipped to playback 3D features (boooo!)

Any thoughts on the Franklin Institute's IMAX screen? I'm probably going to be seeing Star Trek there over the weekend.

I've seen a lot of movies on the IMAX screen here in Irvine and while some presentations have been better then others, I've always found it worth the extra couple bucks.
