Hi, ever since last fall, I've been really interested in reading a fantasy-adventure novel, but something that takes place in the present day, like Harry Potter. I couldn't really get into Harry Potter because the series becomes more fantasy than cotemporary as it goes along. I was also going to try the Percy Jackson series, but I have no interest in another story about a kid, especially told in first person.

I'm interested in something that takes place in the present day, has a fantasy-supernatural-action-adventure elements, where the main characters are adults.

Can anyone make some good recommendations?

Thank you.

Check out the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. It's about a Wizard in modern day chicago whose a detective. Some some chapters are posted on his website. Just google Jim Butcher and take a gander.

You might try AMERICAN GODS by Neil Gaiman.

Most definitely. American Gods is practically exactly what you're looking for.

Dresden Files are also very good. You may also like the Repairman Jack novels by F. Paul Wilson. The first is The Tomb http://www.amazon.com/Tomb-Adversary-Cycle-Repairman-Jack/dp/0812580370/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242752498&sr=1-10

There's an entire subgenre known as urban fantasy, which includes most of the books of Jim Butcher, Laurel K. Hamilton, Marc del Franco, A. Lee Martinez, and Kat Richardson.

Patricia Briggs' "Mercy Thompson" series isn't too bad. The 1st book is "Moon Called". Mercy is a shape shifter who's other form is a Coyote. I'm currently reading the 2nd book, "Blood Bound".

If interested in urban fantasy, try Charles De Lint. First, try Moonheart, Somplace to Be Flying, Trader, and Greenmantle.

The Word and Void series by Terry Brooks fits this bill. The first is called Running with the Demon. Also the Magic Kingdom of Landover series is set in present day, though much of it takes place in an alternate reality (very Fantasy).
