New Hannibal Lecter film directed by Ridley?
From ContactMusic (who?):
SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS is teaming up with director SIR RIDLEY SCOTT to bring his most infamous villain HANNIBAL LECTER back to the big screen.
The actor will reprise his cannibalistic serial killer for the fourth time in a second sequel to the 1991 hit film The Silence of the Lambs, for which he won a Best Actor Oscar.
Hopkins also appeared in 2001's Hannibal before starring in the 2002 prequel Red Dragon.
And actress Cate Blanchett has been tipped to take over the role of Clarice Starling after Jodie Foster pulled out to direct Claire Danes in the forthcoming Flora Plum.
A spokesperson for film-makers Universal says, "Hopkins and Scott are both very committed. We like what we've got, and the revised script is really, really good."

No, thanks. I'm good. I really didn't need to see Hannibal, and I really don't want to see this.

Silence was great and I loved Hannibal (I thought it was a fantastic black comedy), but really hated Red Dragon. I'm game for just about anything Scott does, though.
However, this seems like a really dated story, as nobody outside of Foster is really attached to Flora Plum anymore. (And Jodie Foster did Maggie Simpsons voice on last weeks The Simpsons? Really?)

First, Scott is one of my top 5 all-time favorite directors. But I loathed "Hannibal". It was not only his worst movie IMO. But one of the worst films I've ever seen. But I loved "Red Dragon". Fantastic cast. And miracle of miracles, Brett Ratner actually captured some of the essence and spirit that made "Lambs" so great and suspenseful. Not equal, but an admirable effort. And I was extremely entertained. That said, I'm not crazy about Scott being attached to another "Hannibal" film. And why the hell wouldn't Jodie Foster do another? Sure, I can see why she didn't want anything to do with "Hannibal". But if this script is a good as they say it is....why not? Cate Blanchett is one of the best actresses working today, but there are too many people playing this character at this point.

Isn't Scott attached to about 4 projects at this point? Every time I hear about directors with films piling up I have to believe the majority of them won't come to fruition.

The last movie, the Hannibal prequel, was the worst in the series in my opinion. Maybe they're trying to redeem the series before it fades off into the sunset.

That said, yeah, the series is probably as good as dead at this point.

The Contact Music article is simply a reprint of this article from 2000. How did you stumble upon this one anyway, Killer?

I read Hannibal when it was first released. Throughout the entire book, I kept thinking to myself that it was totally unfilmable. I was right of course.

Glad you're amused. Many enjoyed the film a great deal. And thought it was much better than "Hannibal". And "Manhunter" aside, it was the best reviewed movie of the prequels/sequels.

Re: New Hannibal Lecter film directed by Ridley?
FAIL
Is Anthony Hopkins going to moisturize his mug in a slab of human face flesh, again?
Fuck no. He saw "Hannibal Rising" too remember.
About 48-hours-ago a news item surfaced suggesting the 71-year-old actor was set to reprise his signature role, that of greasy-haired maniac Hannibal Lecter, for a fourth time. And according to so-called official sources, Ridley Scott, who directed the lackluster but successful "Hannibal", was eyeing a return to the director's chair. Oh, and Cate Blanchett is the frontrunner to play Clariiiiiiiiiice..
Dubious? You betcha - and the story isn't just far-fetched, it's as false as my grandmother's teeth.
Not to say the story is a fake - it isn't, in fact it's quite real; even the quotes are legit.... thing is, it's a story from seven years ago.
Why has it only emerged now? Well, either time-traveling Jacob from "Lost" is fucking with with the movie nerds, or "It's an old New York Post story - one without a date, that's suddenly popped up in Google News", a friend from Universal tells us via email. "The NY post website probably reposted a few archived articles, and unfortunately Google has picked this one up, believing it's re-posted date to be the same day the story was written. They even quote a Variety article in there - you're going to be hard-pressed to find such an article at Variety after 2001. Bottom Line : It's the old pre-"Hannibal" story getting another-run again. There's no new movie".
Of course there's not. Don't people remember who was tipped to replace Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling before Julianne Moore got the "Hannibal" gig? Cate Blanchett. And why did Jodie Foster opt to do that film in the first place? She - as this 'new' article suggests - was busy directing the long-gestating "Flora Plum". You only have to do a web search for "Hannibal" news items to see that this new item is a near replica of ones published pre-911. Even the quotes are old.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news folks, but... Wait!, this isn't bad news at all, we all saw the first "Silence of the Lambs" sequel, right?!

I forgot they even made that horrible other Hannibal flick... I liked Red Dragon but HANNIBAL was fucking terrible and I think this franchise is beyond dead.

Hannibal was absolute crap. No more Ridley Scott for this series, please.
Red Dragon was surprisingly excellent. In fact, if they get a decent enough script, I'd be willing to give Ratner another shot.

I'd see it. I love the characters from the series, and I liked all the films so far with the exception of "Hannibal Rising". I'm guessing I'm one of the few who dug "Hannibal". I read the book and I loved the "fuck alla yuze" ending Thomas Harris wrote in regards to the fate of Hannibal and Clarice. It's a shame they changed the ending for the film.

Hannibal wasn't a bad film, if you took it as a separate movie from Silence of the Lambs, which is pretty much perfect. Red Dragon was competent but too by the numbers to really make a lasting impression (which is no surprise when you consider the director). I'll take the stylish flamboyance of Hannibal over the humdrum of Red Dragon anyday.

Re: New Hannibal Lecter film directed by Ridley?
Something else to consider about Red Dragon is that Ratner had three films to pool ideas from. There were hints of Silence with Lecter's cell, keeping the same actors to play the doctor and guard, The dinner scene and the first fight with Lecter had that Hannibal flamboyance. And he had Manhunter to lift visual cues from when he shot Graham's photo with Lounds, the quick cuts going to the different forensic specialists, and Dollarhyde stalking his co-workers in the van.
