The Simpsons -- "Four Great Women And A Manicure" -- 05/10/09

"Four Great Women and a Manicure"
Spoiler:
Marge and Lisa visit the nail salon where they engage in a spirited debate as to whether a woman can be smart, powerful and beautiful all at the same time. To prove their point, they spin four tales of famous women featuring famous Springfield faces: Selma as Queen Elizabeth I, Lisa as Snow White, Marge as Lady Macbeth and Maggie as the idealistic architect protagonist from Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead.”

This episode started really early - not only did I miss the couch-gag, but the entire set-up before the Queen Elizabeth story.

"The Fountainhead? Isn't that the bible for right-wing losers?"

Wow, an entire episode without Bart. I wonder if that's ever happened before.

I found this boring. I have never heard of "The Fountainhead"

this episode also started early for me - so I was kind of lost from the begining

I have my TiVo set to a 6:59 start time (CST) every week.

I didn't miss anything, it started right on time for me.

DVR missed the intro too. I liked what I saw though. Not the best, but some great jokes in there. Especially the 7 dwarfs rip (and the song at the end).

Didn't care much for it, except the dwarves' song. And the Disney lawyer looking to get his talons sharpened at the nail salon.

Moe's line: "Someone call Beowulf, Grendel's gotten in here again" line did get a good laugh out of me.

My DirecTV HD DVR also missed the first minute and a half but thanks to Hulu, I caught the portion I missed.

Wow. I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. Come to think of it, I don't think that's ever happened before. Are the cast of the Simpsons pulling a Scrubs?

Ditto. Deleted after about 10 minutes. Hate these types of episodes.

Funny ep. Loved The Fountainhead story. This was the second time Maggie has been in an Ayn Rand themed daycare

Is this only the second time that Maggie has "spoken"?

She spoke in a Treehouse of Horror Episode. But it was a weird voice. Maybe one of the alien voices?

1st time was "Lisa Says Her First Word." No one was around to hear her say Daddy.

2nd time was The Simpsons Movie. Its during the end credits and as the family leaves, she says Sequel which everyone hears.

Re: The Simpsons -- "Four Great Women And A Manicure" -- 05/10/09

I thought the Fountainhead portion was great because I started reading the book a few days ago and am about half-way through.

However, I think Dagny Taggart from Atlas Shrugged would have been a better choice; no gender change would have been needed.

I thought Maggie sounded like Jodie Foster.

EDIT: It WAS Jodie Foster: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000149/

The Beowulf line was about the only good thing in this ep.

There are other out of continuity examples of her talking, like when James Earl Jones voiced her in the THOH episode, and in a Lisa nightmare where she said "It's your fault I don't talk."

Back when the Simpsons started I remember Matt Groening saying if Maggie ever became a regular speaking part Whoopi Goldberg would voice her.
