Box Office talk (05/08 - 05/10): The Star Trek edition

Box Office Mojo is putting Thursday's estimate at $7 million and Friday at $24 million, for a total of $31 million. That's down from the $35 - $36 million dollar estimate I've seen thrown around. Still, pretty impressive take for a Star Trek move.

Wolvie at $8.5 million on Friday.

I think it'll get a little bump today and maybe grab $70 million. Depends on how much it drops on Mother's Day.

Reviews very rarely influence how good a movie will open unless it's just flatout negative. This is especially true for sequels (which doesn't really apply in this case).

When did Earth make all that money? I thought the thing was gonna flop with all that recycled footage plus the fact that a lot of americans probably don't give a shit about nature docs.

And at the end of the day, it's still Star Trek which is a turnoff for a lot of folks.

Looks like Trek will get a good haul this weekend. I'm sure the good word-of-mouth will only keep it going right into May 21st when T4 arrives. Wolvie deserves to have a steep drop; it sucks.

I think I may see my first Star Trek movie Monday. Never been interested in this franchise but the reviews have me wanting to see this.

I tried telling a woman i work with that its's not a normal trek film and she'd enjoy it. She just woulldn't listen and is in the mindset that its a Star Trek movie.

Fast and Furious starting to slow now. Still a nice take, however -

with foreign box office of $170 mil., that bumps world-wide total to $321 million.

Re: Box Office talk (05/08 - 05/10): The Star Trek edition

I have to say, I could not believe the lines to see this movie! I went with a couple of friends who came to visit me, this weekend, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole audience really seemed to enjoy it, and there was great applause at the end. Very enjoyable. Great film.

We went to a 7:30 p.m. showing, and I had bought the tickets online, earlier in the day. We went out to eat before heading to the theater. We got there about an hour and a half before the movie started, and the lines were outside the theater. Then, after that packed showing, as we were leaving, the next showing was not only outside of the theater, the line was snaking out into the parking lot. I couldn't believe it! Star Trek is BACK!

Re: Box Office talk (05/08 - 05/10): The Star Trek edition

Pretty damn impressive for Star Trek. I would guess near $66-18 million for the weekend and almost $156 million overall US. I am sure it'll do bigger than usual numbers overseas compared to other Trek films though.
I still do think this will be much more front loaded than people think. Even with the very positive reviews (I know I would recommend it.) and repeat viewings you have to remember Star Trek is a property that is more than capable of being very front loaded. Just look at Nemesis. Even though that movie sucked it did had like a 70% drop ddnt it in its 2nd weekend.

yes. you said it was going to make like $55 million opening weekend, which in of itself wasn't all that crazy, but then you went on to say it was only going to make $115 million or in it's entire domestic run. that's ridiculous.

So, at $70+ million this weekend, even at half of that next weekend, it's still over $100 million, and that's not counting the weekdays next week of probably $3 million per day, give or take. It'll hit $120 million probably before it's 3rd weekend.

Re: Box Office talk (05/08 - 05/10): The Star Trek edition

The REAL money for Paramount is going to come with the sequel...much like Batman Begins (which people forget only made $48 million opening weekend and $205 million domestic) paved the way for The Dark Knight becoming one of the biggest movies ever, once everyone gets around to finding out how good this latest Trek movie is (be it in theaters or later on home video or cable), there will be lines around the block for the sequel.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next Trek movie made "Star Wars" kind of money. As is, this one appears on the safe track to a $200 to $225 domestic take. Possibly more if movies like the upcoming "Angels & Demons" and "Terminator Salvation" underperform.
