List of dvds that are better than R1 versions

So far I could only come up with 3 titles that are better than their R1 counterparts

All r2 UK

Color of Money
Armageddon 2 discs SE
From Dusk Till Dawn 2 discs SE

They're the best versions cause they're all anamorphic, while the r1's are not.

Any other titles out there?

www.dvdcompare.net is a good starting point.

And if packaging is your main concern, it seems like dvds from spain have the most steelbooks.

In what way are these two R2 releases superior to their R1 counterparts? I like both and would consider getting the R2 versions if there were compelling reason to do so.

Well, Cinema Paradiso is questionable (you can read a review of the UK DVD here: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/review...697&User=29844), but the the Japanese version of Tampopo is miles ahead in quality:

Tampopo USA version: awful VHS letterboxed widescreen
Tampopo Japanese version: beautiful anamorphic widescreen. And the English subtitles are excellent. It's the only version to get actually...I would definitely purchase the Tampopo Japanese DVD.
You can buy a cheap version here: http://cgi.ebay.com/Tampopo-Japan-2D...3286.m20.l1116

or the more expensive version here: http://www.yesasia.com/us/tampopo-da...0-en/info.html

Very interesting indeed. The discs at each of those links appear to be put out by Geneon - are they identical? That is, is there any reason to spend double to money and get the disc from YESAsia?

Well, the Ebay seller states that his version is anamorphic, so there's a good chance that the video quality is better than the letterboxed usa version. I don't know if it's an official Chinese DVD or if it's a bootleg Chinese DVD copy of the Japanese DVD (because the cheap version also has Chinese subtitles). If you want to play it safe, what's an extra 25 dollars for guaranteed quality for a masterpiece? It's better to spend 50 dollars on one of those most re-watchable Japanese masterpieces ever or you can spend that 50 dollars on two to three DVDs of films that are forgettable and that you will rarely watch (for example, instead of spending that 50 bucks on the Criterion DVD of Benjamin Button and Underworld 3), spend it on Tampopo instead. It's worth it in the long-run.

You don't happen to live in New York City, do you?

EDIT: I sent you a message with updated info

I'm also going to order the Supermarket Woman dvd (same director as Tampopo) from that Amazon seller as well if I don't find it at my Japanese DVD store. I didn't see this film, but it looks like a good blind buy.
