Movies w/ Dir. Cut that was never released
Movies that we know have longer cuts that the director never got a chance to finish. Heres a few that come to mind
Poseidon(wolfgang peterson)
X-Men 3: The Last Stand (talked about in commentary)
im blanking on any others, list ones that you know are out there and would like to see the studios release

Nightbreed
1492: Conquest of Paradise
I think I had read that Terrance Malik was interested in restoring a boat load of footage he had deleted for the theatrical cut of 'The Thin Red Line'
the US has not seen the 6 hour mini series cut of Billie August's 'The Best Intentions' (Criterion - hello?)
there are alot of film that have international cuts of films that US audiences haven't seen:
- Milo & Otis
- March of the Penguins
- Little Buddha
- Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland
- 1492: Conquest of Paradise (sligthly longer version with violence that would have pushed the film to a R-rating)
- Kill Bill Vol. 1 (Asian Market uncut/"color" version)
- Until the End of the World
- Malena
- Caligula (pseudo Tinto Brass cut)
- Southland Tales (Cannes cut: 160 minutes)
let's hope the recent discovery of the full length cut of 'Metropolis' and restoration gets a theatrical or home video release.
Bryan Singer has been rumoured to state he'd restore the deleted return to Krypton scene from his 'Superman Returns'
I thought '54' was restored.
'Menace II Society' - unrated cut was released on Criterion laserdisc, but not available on DVD.
personal, I'd love to own the tv cut of Mike Nichols' 'The Birdcage' with a lot restored footage but minus the R-rated material.
Land Before Time - was cut of alot of finalized animation that Spielberg cut to make more family friendly and G-ratable.

a longer cut of the film or the original NC-17 rated version that has been released in other regions (on DVD)?

I'd love to see the director's cut of "The Invasion." The one that Warners balked at, then hired James McTeigue and the Wachowski brothers to "save." I've always found the movie mildly underrated with a great performance from Kidman & would greatly enjoy something more in line with the first hour before it all goes to shit.

There was a big fracas made by Tony Kaye that Edward Norton took over at some point and basically edited the film himself in order to secure himself an Oscar nom. Kaye got mad, quit, and tried to demand that New Line credit the film as directed by Humpty Dumpty. I guess DGA or some laws don't allow a director to change the name on a film when the dispute is public, so the film still has his name on it.
I'm pretty sure Norton denies the claims that he took control, so the alternate cut of American History X is not necessarily an existing cut. Probably is, but I don't know if there's proof.

Rambo IV. Supposedly Stallone talked on Jay Leno about working on a directors cut, but I guess it got put on hold because he's doing Expendables now.
Braveheart also had a lot of gore scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. I would love for a directors cut of that.

Wasn't Reign of Fire supposed to have a different cut with a darker ending?

In the audio commentary of The Forbidden Kingdom, Rob Minkoff and John Fusco mention a potential director's cut but nothing ever came of that.
The director of Max Payne promised a gamer-centric extended cut and instead released a minutely extended (like two minutes longer) unrated director's cut that featured lame CG blood. For all his talk of what the extended cut would be like, the unrated cut hardly seems fitting.

Almost forgot, The New World had an extended cut that, although having a very limited theatrical release, never saw the light of day on home video.

A full 3 hour extended cut was also recently released on DVD

in regards to 'The New World' I thought the ending of the theatrical version was different than the extended cut - maybe I'm just envisioning it that way, but I thought the theatrical ending was tighter and better edited.

Really? Where? Italy as well? Is the 3 hour cut on BD?
If so, is it region locked?
What changed exactly in the ending of the extended cut?

Re: Movies w/ Dir. Cut that was never released
The Avengers - Trailers, early press material, the novelization, and early previews indicated that the movie was about 1/2 longer than the theatrically released version.
I even remember reading a mixed review (**1/2) that came out very early which listed it as 115m. Since one of the flaws of the final product was that it was incomprehensible, and this review of a 115m. was mixed and not, say, completely negative, I'm pretty sure filling in the gaps would make it an immensely better film.
Same with Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, only that's missing 45 minutes of footage and the special effects were embarrassing.

Malena has been released in other regions with the original theatrical cut on DVD. The film was re-cut to fit Disney morality standards in the US, but there is an excellent Korean 3 disc release with everything intact.
I also believe that the latest Caligula release includes the Tinto Brass cut.
