Heroes S4 pulling a Lost - All episodes run straight through, no breaks

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/05/bu...1&ref=business

Tim Kring, the creator of “Heroes,” said the show would adopt the “Lost” model of scheduling: It will run all its episodes in a row, without repeats, starting in September and running straight until the start of the Winter Olympics. He said the show would probably produce only 19 episodes next season, down from the 25 it made this season.

That's fine and dandy, but it's not gonna help Kring get back the 10M+ viewers who bailed on the show since season 2.

It's still doing okay in the 18-49 demographic, but I think season 4 will still have the same numbers (6-7M viewers a week)

I have to wonder how much more patience NBC has with Kring. Clearly, excising Loeb and Alexander didn't do the trick.

Let's see what happens when Bryan Fuller is around for a full season. I do think this is probably the last year for the show though whether it sucks or not... it has just run its course.

Lost? 24 adopted the straight run before they did.

All serials should be run that way. Hell, start Chuck after the Olympics and run that straight through as well.

I thought Heroes was already doing this, running their "volumes" straight through without breaks.

Agreed, it doesn't make much sense to ask the viewer to follow continuous storylines when you are inserting (sometimes long) gaps between episodes. 24 was a pretty big offender of this practice during it's first few seasons, IMO.

So how come viewers of serialized shows like Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, etc. have no problem following storylines with gaps in between? Seems to me fans of 24, Heroes, etc. would be just as smart and sophisticated as them, if not more so.

and Alias did that before 24. I think Alias was the first show to do this.

Since the show seemed to get worse during the last handful of episodes that had him as a consulting producer, I'm not all that confident that he's the saving grace everyone makes him out to be.

I don't watch Heroes but I imagine Lost is more complicated than the chick dramas you mention.

Whats the reasoning for only 19 episodes next season? Is that all that was ordered?

Amen. This is bleeding viewers every week. You need good writing to keep people and how many times were we told it was going to get better after the next chapter? Never happened.

Both shows did it at the same time. If you want to get technical, Alias started 4 days before 24 that season, but 24 announced the plan to switch to the format before Alias did.

And 24 stuck with the plan, while Alias went to the one long run, take a long break, then another long run in season 5.

I don't know, I don't watch either. Do they follow the serialized format of picking up a new episode at the exact same moment of the episode before?

The breaks for last season and this season were unintentional though. Last season was interrupted due to the writer's strike and this season started a week earlier than planned, so they had a break to ensure the finale aired during May sweeps.

But they have had breaks between episodes 8/9 and 13/14 (unless you are counting clip shows as episodes... I am not). If they only started a week earlier than planned this year, they should have only shown 1 episode on that first week instead of two. Whatever the case, it seems like poor planning if they had really wanted to go straight through.

I'd prefer they adopted 24's approach of killing off/write out cast members. That's the root of their problems, and I don't see how they can fix the show without addressing it.

And when you do kill of a character, do it in a way that doesn't require the actor to remain on staff!

Wasn't that due to Garner's pregnancy though? I can't remember if it was that season or not.
