Thanks for the heads up!

Might have to check my local BBV. Last time I was there they had PVD Blu-Ray's but no deals like this.

Been wanting to get Nick & Norah for cheap somewhere.

Yep, main reason why I don't pick up anything used there....it is a shame too, since the BD are rented less and have the scratch resistant coating, I actually might be willing to buy a couple used if they only had their original cases....I know you can buy empty Blu cases online, but then you're just adding to the cost and lowering the deal you get from buying used....

Rather than starting another thread, I'll just add that they are also doing a 2 for $10 deal on prev-viewed sd $9.99 and under. It's basically the same as the 4 for $20 deal, but now you can get in on it if you had a hard time finding 4 movies you wanted (I know I'm in that camp).

I picked up:
Mother of Tears
Tropic Thunder (just went to 9.99...it's disc 1 of the 2-disc set. So it's the longer unrated version and has 2 commentary tracks)

They do sell them in the rental cases (since that’s what they’re shipped in) but the insert is the original that comes from the regular case. I bought a bunch of the Hancock Blu Ray cases from Best Buy for a penny, so that’s what I have been using to switch them out.

And I also stopped by BB during lunch and they were not having the sale either.

Have you never been in BBV, this is how they always sell all the previously
viewed movie product.

they don't get the rental blu's in regular blu cases so they can't sell
them in regular blu cases.

I think it was the preview disc that was given out free w/the purchase of another blu-ray. But if you took the preview disc to the register and rang it up it sold for .01 by itself.

I went to the Blockbuster on Kapiolani Boulevard and on Piikoi Street -- BOTH had the sale on. Kapiolani started the sale last week and the cashier said as far as he knows, it continues until the BDs are gone. (I presume he means the excess which they've pulled.)

*edit*
Went to 4 branches now and found the following titles 2 for $25:

Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian
Pride and Glory
Get Smart
Transsiberian
My Best Friend's Girl
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Swing Vote
Hancock
Space Buddies
Wanted
Nim's Island
The Express
Quarantine
Re-Cycle
Soul Men
Burn After Reading
Made of Honor
Pirates II Stagnetti's Revenge
Wall-E
Broken Trail
Righteous Kill
The Happening
Deception
Donnie Darko
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Traitor
RocknRolla
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Rumor has it
Alvin and the Chipmunks
Eagle Eye
Starship Troopers 3: Marauder
Becoming Jane
Lakeview Terrace
Battle in Seattle
Hellboy II
Pineapple Express
Kung Fu Panda
Sleepwalking
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Run Fatboy Run
Doubt
The Dark Knight
The Incredible Hulk (in green case, no slipcover)
Sukiyaki Western Django
Zombie Strippers
Stuck
The Fall
Marley & Me
The House Bunny
Doom
Ghost Town
Futurama Bender's Game
Ronin
Stranger Than Fiction
Enchanted
Iron Man
Tropic Thunder
Drillbit Taylor
Role Models
Game Plan
Saawariya
Little Miss Sunshine
Twilight
Redbelt
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Death Race

And more I can't remember. All came in Blu-Ray cases with cover art. As is the custom at the local Blockbusters, however, they put a little label on the bottom of the clear plastic front cover and/or bottom of jacket cover. The label is about 1/2" x 2-1/2" and has the title, barcode, etc. The one on the clear plastic usually comes off easily; not so much the one on the jacket.

Last time I had looked, most BDs were preview-priced at $16.99. Now the regular price seems to be $14.99, and currently the sale price.

They were also selling some of the 2-pack titles (new) for $16.99, like Sweeney Todd/Sleepy Hollow, Mission Impossible I and II.

I'd be happy if I can find Zack & Miri, Vicky Christina Barcelona and maybe Nick & Norah.

Love that Digital Playground still continues to make R-Rated versions of the "Pirates" films

I went to four BBs today - they were all along the path I was already taking, so I wasn't just driving around - and none had the sale, but one said they had the signage in back and he guessed that Tues. would be the day because that's when they change prices.

My bigger problem is coming up with four movies worth paying $12.50 ea. for. Other than Hellboy II, Tropic Thunder, and Wanted, I'm pretty much screwed for something else. Stuff like Hancock or Pineapple Express are best left for $4-$5 regular DVDs IMO.

That's sort of my problem as well. Not so much finding something to pay $12.50, but paying that for BD that I could get new on Amazon Marketplace. I don't have any extra replacement BD cases at the moment, so I'd have to order those.

Stopped by my local BBV (Novato, CA) to check out what they had. Pretty decent selection. The only ones that interested me were Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist and National Treasure 1 & 2.

Also I'm pretty anal about the artwork condition in my collection, so seeing the BD's in the BBV rental cases was kind of a turn off. Reminded me of the HWV HD-DVD clearance a year or so ago. The rental cases are bigger than BD cases, so when switching cases they leave a big crease on the back where the rental spines were.

Either way, I hope everyone finds something they like in this sale! :)

DirkBelig
05-04-09, 08:08 PM
I thought about getting some red cases for my HWV HD DVDs, but never got in on a good deal and frankly I don't give a darn. When I'm not playing the movies, they cases sit out of sight on shelves or in a back room and I don't worry that they don't look the same on the edges. I remember when they started cutting holes in cardboard slipcovers for the UPC to scan thru to prevent people sticking Criterions into bargain cases. Some people filled their diapers that they didn't want "damaged" sleeves and blah-blah-woof-woof. I pointed out that when it's on the shelf, you can't even see the hole and they'd have none of it. Their lives were ruined and they wanted clerks to have to take the time to pull the cases out of the sleeves to make sure the proper discs were inside. Yeesh.

Disney Joins Fox In Excising Extras From DVD Rentals
4 May 2009 2:28 AM, PDT

Disney will become the second studio to delete "extras" from DVDs that it provides to online and brick-and-mortar rental outlets, including Netflix and Blockbuster. The decision follows a similar one by Fox Home Video, which received widespread criticism among video "rentailers," and apparently sparked a retreat by Fox, which decided to provide a movie-only version at a discounted price and allow the movie-with-extras version to be sold to stores at a premium price.

I HATEHATEHATE that they're doing this because I'm an extras fiend. All these shens just make me hold off on getting the 2-discers a year later when they're marked down or getting a cheap PPV BD. I wanted the extras for Tropic Thunder and instead of the $5 PPV DVD, I'm getting the $12.50 PPV BD. Net profit to greedy anti-consumer studios: ZERO!!!!

It was at Family Video, but I didn't rent it so I can't comment on what is or isn't missing from the retail disc. I guess they felt they needed to label the cover art after the Slumdog fiasco.

OK, first problem, possibly: Is Hellboy II supposed to be one or two discs. The reviews I see say it's a 2-disc set with the movie on BD and a DVD of the extras. I've only got the movie disc, but the case art clearly lists all the features of both discs. Just popped it in and it only has the first disc's extras. Aw crap. :(

darkside
05-05-09, 08:18 PM
No Role Models I could find. Probably too new.

Picked up:
Step Brothers
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
The Mummy 3 (FYI this does not include the DVD that had a few extras and the digial copy of the film)
Tropic Thunder
Walk Hard

Unfortunately I missed that Walk Hard had a huge crack in the disc near the spindle (guess its not just Netflix this happens to) so that one has to go back tomorrow.

I've only got the movie disc
So are all the 2 disc BRs stripped down to being only 1 disc at BB?

DirkBelig
05-06-09, 12:58 PM
I was talking with the clerks who sold Hellboy to me during checkout and I believe that Iron Man and Dark Knight are two-disc (Indy 4 should be too, but I bought all three of those at retail long ago). A clerk at another BB close to my home didn't know for sure, but speculated that BB sent rental product minus the 2nd disc. What's odd is that the case art lists the extras, but not that there is a 2nd disc containing it. Since it's missing the advertised content, he think the other store should allow me to exchange it (too bad they don't have anything else like Zack & Miri Porn) and if they don't, he'll take care of it.

Picked up Serenity and Hancock at the latter store. Serenity was priced at $24.99! The other place had the Die Hard Collection (1-4) set as a PPV in the original blue case for....$119.99!!! What a bargain! I was thinking of paying $70.99 at Amazon, but this is so much better!!!!11!!eleven!11!!

OK, first problem, possibly: Is Hellboy II supposed to be one or two discs.

I have all three of the Blu-Ray discs you mentioned and I will confirm they all have a second disc of extras (which you also mentioned)

Usually Blockbuster will pull the second disc on their SD copies, as they usually contain just the Digital Copy. Wonder if that sort of thinking is why their distributors are sending single discs of multi-disc sets.

DirkBelig
05-06-09, 04:53 PM
To clarify, we were talking about whether BBV's copies came with the second discs. darkside upthread said that Mummy 3 didn't come with the 2nd disc. Did you get yours PPVed or new-at-retail?

I got mine new on release.

Though I thought the question you asked in one of your posts, was if the Hellboy Blu-Ray was 1 or 2 discs in general. So I answered it.

I'm really not sure what was confusing about my last post. I used the SD PVD's at BBV as an example of how BBV might be getting shipped multi-disc sets with only the first disc. Usually they are pretty good at getting 2-discs, but if the trend for even SD's is to have a second disc as a Digital Copy, (as I mentioned) I wonder if their distributors are thinking the same for their Blu-Ray stock.

I swapped out my broken Walk Hard disc and bought four more today. This is probably it for me.

Picked up:
Pineapple Express
Juno
Unbreakable
Batman Gotham Knight

Pineapple Express and Juno are missing the 2nd disc which was just the digital copy and this is expected. Not a bad deal and I caught up on several movies I wanted that I just wasn't willing to pay $20+ for.

DirkBelig
05-06-09, 10:22 PM
I took Hellboy back and they didn't have anything I wanted to exchange it for, so they refunded me the full sticker price! I paid $12.50+tax and they gave me $16.99+tax back.

I went to another store and they had Seth and Liz Make Smut....but nothing else I wanted to spend that much on. D'oh! I would've gladly exchanged BH2 for that, but nooooooooooooooo! Drat.

The whole case thing is a deal breaker for me. I hate those BB rental cases. They rarely close correctly and look just god awful on the shelf. Ive got a small place so they are on display and not hidden away.

Anyone in south LA or north OC know of a BB that doesnt have these sale disks in the rental cases? It doesnt even look like they have the proper inserts and covers if i did want to get a bluray case on my own.

I went to a different location today and saw Twilight. Surprisingly, I went to a location where the manager and employees were very talkative and friendly, so I asked their opinions on movies that I haven't seen and went from there (they both told me that Twilight was geared towards teenage girls?!). I also thought to ask about to 2-disc editions, because I don't want a single disc from a 2-disc set. I ended up with Lakeview Terrace and Get Smart, two blind buys for me.

I give up. I've grown tired of this scavenger hunt for Slumdog Millionaire and Seven Pounds. I think only one poster has mentioned seeing those titles. I've had enough and I've spent enough.

I asked the other day when they replenish and he said he had no idea. So, fail. Any idea if this is a semi permanent sale, like the 3 for $20 that it always running?

can anyone who picked up "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead" from BBV check something for me .....

Earlier this month I picked up a copy and when playing it back noticed a green pixel pop up at the 1 minute 52 second mark before PSH says the line "Blame it on Rio"

I thought this might have just been due to some fingerprints/scratches on the disc so I brought it back and exchanged it. Picked up a copy with no marks on it and assumed all was fine, but when I went to give it a quick preview spin last night, sure enough .......

I have no idea what the issue is here unless this is some watermark added onto rental copies as I don't recall ever seeing this issue with the copy I took out from the library or on my HD recording on my DVR

Could be a mastering error. Noticed the same thing. It only happened once and if you blink you'll miss it.

If you look carefully on eBay, you can usually find these titles for $13 or less. Plus usually, it comes in an original case. Bought Body of Lies for $12 and Slumdog for $13. Slumdog had a tear on the front cover, but everthing else was good. In the end, I saved about $2.50 from tax and I didn't have to wait for the movies to be available at my local blockbuster's.
