and when I mean non-epic i am just talking about excluding "The Godfather" Parts I & II (maybe include Part III if you'd like). "Apocalypse Now".

His less critically acclaimed, but nonetheless great, smaller movies.

I just saw "The Outsiders" (Complete Novel) again and really has held up so well for me. I even watched the extras: making-of and casting which was very interesting.

Seeing Adam Baldwin, Kate Capshaw, Catherine Mary Stewart try out for parts. Knowing S. E. Hinton was in all her book-to-movie adaptations and seeing who she is. This was just a very well done movie with a great cast.

I also love "Rumble Fish". It was so stylized with hints of color in an all B/W movie. Love Rourke and Dillon in those roles.

Tough choice, but probably go with TO with RF very close 2nd.

I think "The Conversation" will get votes and I've seen it twice, a long time ago, didn't love it as much as I wanted to. Also, liked "The Cotton Club", but haven't seen it in forever. And as much as I've tried just didn't get into "Bram Stoker's Dracula" the few times I've seen.

"The Rainmaker" is probably a close 3rd behind RF. Loved the performances and the story. Matt Damon and Danny DeVito were really good, and of course a nice role by Mickey Rourke.

So what is your favorite non-epic FFC?

Definitely The Conversation. It is a great film on its own, but the fact that he made it in between Godfathers 1 and 2 makes it even more impressive.

The Conversation, which is actually his best film, period, if you ask me.

Just for the record, you left out One From the Heart. If you had put that there, that would have been my choice, but then again, since it also went way over budget like Apocalypse Now, it's understandable that you left it off. But you never mentioned it, so I assumed your forgot it.

Considering your poll however, my pick would be a tie between Peggy Sue Got Married and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Even if the Godfather films were in "competition" here I'd still pick the Conversation as my favorite, with Youth Without Youth as a close second.

I'd say my favorite is Tucker: The Man and His Dream; it's such a great biopic.

Rumble Fish is a better film than The Outsiders for me; the Outsiders is sappy.

i left a few off, there are only 10 options allowed.

The Conversation is the best of the bunch, imo. The Outsiders and Dracula round out my top 3.

For me it's a tie The Outsiders (1983) and Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) I love them both way to hard to pick one over the other.

<b>The Conversation</b>

Possibly his best movie.

The Conversation -- the other films on the list are mediocre at best.

His less critically acclaimed, but nonetheless great, smaller movies.I didn't pay attention to this sentence the first time I read it. <b>The Conversation</b> won the Palme d'Or, so I think it would qualify as being very much acclaimed.

And now this gets me thinking - Coppola has won two Golden Palms, one for The Conversation and one for Apocalypse Now. Also, two of his movies have won the Oscar for best picture (both Godfather films). I wonder if anyone has won multiple Oscars for best picture and multiple Golden Palms, with no overlap?

Well, Apocalypse Now is one of my all-time favorites but not part of the survey. In that case, it's Dracula.

As a film student, I appreciate and admire The Conversation the most. But if I'm being honest with myself, I enjoy watching Bram Stoker's Dracula more than any of the others. I find that there is often a difference between "best" and "favorite".

I voted Dracula, but I've never seen The Conversation (despite owning it) so I'm thinking I need to get on that.

The Conversation, bar far.

Outside of that, the first two Godfather films, and Apocalypse Now; the man hasn't really made a great film outside of those. To be honest, I would argue that he may be one of the most overrated directors of all time.

The man directed Jack for Christ's sake. Jack. I'd rather watch Spielberg's 1941 or The Phantom Menace over Jack.

^^ not sure i would call nominated for 14 Oscars and winning 5 overrated. sure all of his aren't grand epics, but his others are smaller, sweeter stories with great characterizations that seem to stand the test of time.

The Conversation has always been in and out of my all time top ten list. I have to admit though, the commentary track took it down a notch for me when it was revealed (not a real spoiler, but tabbed just in case, you'll have to listen to the track to find out)
where the microphone was hidden, the one bugging Hackman's apt at the end.. The mystery was far more intriguing than the answer..
