Thread "instructions" spoilered. These weekly threads are for price comparisons of all the big new releases, and the posting and discussion of that particular week's store exclusives and freebies.

These lists will likely be incomplete until Wednesday or so, since DVDs are released on Tuesday and one of us needs to visit all the stores to confirm things.

Links to the master list and to the previous and next week's thread are below.

Volunteers needed: I regularly go to Best Buy and Target; but don't visit the other stores every week. If you work at or regularly go to the Wal-Mart, FYE/TWEC chains, Costco, Borders, K-mart/Sears, Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster, Toys-R-Us, or any other store that has DVD exclusives; we'd appreciate any updates you could give us. I am slowly "retiring" from my weekly chain crawls, and will need your help to keep these threads useful.

I believe it is the same, just with the blu-ray now.

You're welcome!

I wonder if these threads need better titles, or if just my perception of DVDtalker's needs is off.

I remember my first several years here, thinking that one of the best thread ideas would be one that compares all the new releases and shows you what the best prices/options were. Finally decided to take on the task, but there seems to be little interest in the threads. We get very few page views. But start a thread about just one of the deals here, and you'll see double or more the number of views and more post participation.

This isn't sour grapes or trying to "toot my own horn". I'm actually trying to retire from these threads and get one of you to take over. I never buy new releases at retail, and am getting away from collecting exclusives, so these threads don't even help me anymore. I just saw the perceived need and started something.

But if only the same few dozen of us check these threads, then I imagine either there isn't a general need for them, or the thread titles are confusing. Perhaps people see "exclusive/freebies" and think that the thread are only for exclusive collectors?

Personally, if I shopped for new releases, I couldn't imagine not wanting a "one-stop-shop". A place where every possible deal and best price is discussed/listed in one convenient place. These threads should be among the most viewed. Again, not looking for glory, I'd post these anonymously if I could. But maybe the general DVDtalk populace has moved on to using CH and waiting for bargains, and doesn't care about new release prices?

Mainly just thinking out loud here, not looking for kudos, but to see if anyone feels the same way, or has any ideas. Maybe the two ideas (exclusives and price comparison) don't work well together, and should be separated? Maybe the thread titles are awful? Maybe mention the release titles in the thread title? Maybe a monthly thread?

while i dont know you, i actually feel that i do know you, trevor. and i do feel that you are in this for the good of all humanity as opposed to tooting your horn. also, while i know you believe that this thread is helpful to a lot of dvd-nerds, i do understand that at times doing any task repetitively can be tiresome (unless you are getting wads and wads of cash). that said, im not so sure about your logic that these threads are not highly valued.

imho, one significant issue with page views, participation, feedback, etc i see is that we, as homo-sapiens, take things for granted. why contribute if a few people will do the work for you? it may be sad, but it cant be helped, as adaptation is one of humanitys strongest (and ironically at times, arguably one of its weakest) attributes.

another point ill make is that its the end of wednesday now. this thread has nearly 500 views. im guessing by saturday, it will have another 500 give or take. sometimes people shop early in the week, sometimes late.

re your point about the sheer number of views or posts when a specific deal thread is created, i think its reasonable to expect that for a number of reasons. for example, when the eventual thread for the "definitive" bsg 4.5 and/or the complete saga with cylon figure is up, people will see that thread title and go crazy. i know i will. but if a definitive thread were created for marley and me, i dont expect much. in other words, bsg will get a lot of views and posts, but the 5 other releases that day will get close to nada. these threads you so dedicate your efforts to are obviously in the middle somewhere because you take into account all new releases. so you wont get the attention of a bsg thread, but you will get a lot more than the marley and me thread.

finally, the number and quality of exclusives lately are weak. whether you like it or not, that is your base. i believe a lot of people do shop around and try to find the best price on items, but a lot of people also tend to buy where they generally always buy (bestbuy, amazon, walmart, etc). and then there are people who buy target if its cheaper than bestbuy, or vice-versa.

i prolly made some weak arguments, but prolly a good point or two as well. anyone else? :D

I know that the last couple of months have been down as far as exclusives, but our numbers didn't go up much when we added the new release comparisons six months ago.

I always imagined the exclusives crowd to be relatively small, but expected everyone to want a "one-stop" thread, and expected page views to skyrocket. So either:

I'm wrong and people don't want/need a "one-stop" thread.

They want one but we're doing it wrong.

They want one but they don't know we have one.

Speaking for myself, I know I subscribe religiously to this thread every week. Without the comparison and the listed exclusives, I would lose track (especially when there are multiple exclusives on a big release).

As for the #s, can it be attributed to the fact that every week there is a new thread so thus once the new thread for next week's releases are created, people generally don't go back to old releases, except for reference? So basically the view # is mostly for how many people view that thread for the week? Versus other threads have high numbers because it is the same thread, just updated with new information over time?

I can go either way, but I am curious if there is only one thread where the updates are to new releases are make weekly, would the #s go up?

Sorry all speculation and no hard core answers. I welcome other people's thoughts on this.

Yeah, but we've always had weekly threads pretty much. And the numbers for when we were only exclusives are pretty much the same as now. We'll get like 1000 views per week, give or take 500. These aren't unique visitors by the way, it could be the same 50 people checking it a couple times per day or every time it gets bumped.
Other threads mentioning just one bargain of the dozen we have listed might get 5,000 to 10,000 views.

I imagine it would all equal out.

Thanks to you both for the input! I'm just mainly thinking out loud myself.

I'm still thinking that the thread titles might be "the problem". I feel that we have a thread that no one who shops for DVDs would want to miss, but no one clicks it. Maybe I'll make next week's thread title, "Free Beer!"

Trevor, I have been bookmarking your thread every week for over two years now. I hardly ever log in just check your updates on the exclusives. I am not sure if that effects your viewership by me not logging in because I am sure I am not the only one who does that. I really find your breakdowns easy to follow and read. But like you said maybe you would get more traffic if you changed the name of the thread to something like: New Release Price Comparison & Freebies. Or something like that. Again thank you for all you do.

Thanks for the numbers Trevor. Keep that thinking aloud bit going..that's the only way we can discuss and figure things out :)

Maybe a thread title: Lowest Price New Releases & Store Exclusive Freebies

Or a title with the word "sale" or "cheap" ...that might be eye-catching because we all know we cannot pass a good sale :)

Almost split it into two threads, with a new title for the comparisons, but not feeling that motivated this week. Maybe later.

Next week's thread (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains/554331-new-release-comparisons-store-exclusives-freebies-5-03-09-5-09-09-a.html) is up.

I think you should split it into 2 threads. The bargain hunters and exclusives collectors are two distinct groups.

I am an exclusives collector and I base my decisions on who has the coolest collectibles. I might even buy the same movie several times if the collectibles are cool enough (regardless of price).

The bargain hunters, on the other hand, probably don't buy exclusives since they usually jack up the price.

By combining the threads, its possible the bargain hunters are seeing the "exclusives" part and skipping it. And the collectors are seeing the "price comparison" part and skipping it too.

^ You're affirming my fears that this will take more work.

If I split it, I'll probably keep the tables here with the "exclusives thread" as well. Simple cut and paste initially, and hopefully not too time consuming to keep them in sync.

Still think the best title is probably "New Release Price Comparisons - week of ___".

I like your tables and they are very useful even though I usually do my own research also to confirm prices and exclusives on stuff I want to buy. Even then your threads serve as confirmation also to make sure I didn't miss anything.

I wouldn't worry a ton about the viewership as long as you enjoy making them... I think there is a good amount of people on this site that appreciate what you do each week, even on weeks where there is not allot of stuff and would miss your posts.

(Thinking aloud: could be possible there are certain people that already know where they are getting a new release or there is a certain exclusive they know about ahead of time and money is not an object so they are just not interested in a comparison.)

Anyway just wanted to let you know I read them too and I would also like to say if you continue to post that IMO I like having the exclusives and the prices in the same table... Myself I am a big fan of exclusives but I'm not rich so I can't buy up every dvd with one and if the price is just too high because of an exclusive then I just have to settle for a different version.

Trevor

Thanks Komsik.

Someone bumped a Twilight thread today, and that reminded me of the Twilight exclusive thread (coincidentally great work done by you). That thread got over 6000 views. If you hadn't done the thread, all of that info would have been in the weekly thread, but I guarantee you that the thread views would have been maybe 2000 tops. Now, I know that Twilight was an aberration, a big hyped release that perhaps deserves it's own bargain thread. But still, I feel like there are thousands of DVDtalk visitors that could benefit from a one-stop thread/table, but just don't know we have it.

I'll admit a slightly selfish thing. I'm hoping that the more people see these threads the more chance we'll have volunteers to work on them. Hopefully this doesn't come out wrong, but my first few years here at DVDtalk I posted very rarely, just checked the forums daily for any bargains. I realized that I was just taking, when, in the course of my bargain hunting, I was coming across deals that I should have been sharing with everyone here. These threads are sort of the culmination of that, a place for not only me to "give back", but to make it easy for others to as well. It's hard to force people to participate of course. We have ten or so of us that provide all the deals and exclusive news, but often I'll find stuff weeks after the fact, and my rare pessimism has me thinking that hundreds of DVDTalkers probably saw the item, but didn't bother to share it anywhere in the forum. So now that I've pissed off the people I'm trying to reach, I'll shut up.

i think i at least alluded to it above, but ill reiterate in detail what is imho...

i dont mean to be a downer, but i dont believe this thread can ever compete with the single dvd release threads. its just not convenient, categorized, and accessible that way. to illustrate, lemme go through a possible scenario for a big dvd release on any given tuesday, with multiple store exclusives:

3 weeks to any number of years prior to release:
- an "alpha" thread is started about the release of both movies on dvd
- rumors, possible artwork, features, etc here and there
- this thread gets updated as time goes by

2 - 3 weeks prior to tuesday:
- someone posts info/ad scans from bestbuy, target, and other (?)
- if the release is anticipated enough or if there are multiple exclusives, someone will create a "beta" thread instead of continuing with the "alpha" thread for convenience
- in any of the above threads (the "alpha", "beta", or the adscan threads), info will be posted and discussed (pics, packaging, features, editions, possible exclusives, etc)
- "trevors" thread is not yet set up

1 week prior to tuesday:
- definitive announcements and details are usually confirmed (again, in the "alpha", "beta", and adscan threads)
- store exclusives may or may not be yet confirmed
- "trevors" thread is set up and is blank

days prior to tuesday:
- all relevant threads get updated as news and annnouncements are made

the sunday prior to tuesday:
- all news, details, and exclusives are usually released, discussed, and dissected in all relevant threads

tuesday to infinity:
- any exclusives that flew under the radar or were overlooked are announced (almost exclusively) on "trevors" thread as time goes by

so according to the above, prices, editions, features, sometimes even store exclusives are all released prior to "trevors" thread. some people have already made up their minds on where to purchase while some have already pre-ordered online. the meat of "trevors" thread is compiled with the definitive questions and answers regarding store exclusives, since this information doesnt easily go anywhere else and is last to be known.

thoughts:
chronologically, "trevors" thread is at a disadvantage that cannot be helped. it is impractical to ask questions and post answers regarding all new releases since, with multiple new releases each week, that would result in a mess of a confusing as heck thread.

again, i dont want to be so pessimistic and i love your threads trevor! but the above is just what i observe. i could be wrong - please anyone correct me if i am inaccurate. and i am tired now.
