Wow. That's an off-season rarity for them. Ok, so it's $4 off $40. Not too bad.

It looks to go up to 10% off whatever the total is.
I added the Sopranos complete series ($374) to my cart to test, and it took off $37.46.

Since the holiday season, DD's prices have gone up noticeably--even sale prices. My jaw dropped recently when Mill Creek boxes that sold for c. $4.50 on sale at various times last year now are "on sale" for over twice that.
Whether they're passing along increases from the DVD producers or taking bigger markups for themselves--or both--I can't say. But I can say that, after all the great sales of '08, DD is sure helping me to keep my wallet closed in '09. (Under $30 spent there so far this year.)
If this 10% off (for $40 in purchases) signifies that the semi-annual 25% off may not happen, well that just means I spend my DVD $ mostly elsewhere. But I sure hope this is not the case.

I've absolutely noticed a price increase on many dvds. For one thing, DD is using a higher MSRP on their Paramount TV titles than Amazon or B&N. That's translated into far less buys from me this year. This coupon does nothing to entice me in the least. But YMMV.

DD does a lot of business during those sales so I wouldn't think that they are going away anytime soon. That does not mean that they won't selectively raise some prices prior to the sale, but they haven't done that across the board in previous sales. You still have to be a smart shopper and compare around and look for the better deals within their sale.

imho, i think dd and dvdp has kept price high lately. and sales have been fairly mild. when retailers are hurting, they either slash prices like crazy to draw extra business or clam up and maintain profit margins. unfortunately, it seems dd and dvdp are doing the latter :(

This works on CDs, too... I am about to spend WAY more than I wanted to...
I don't believe the 20% discounts ever work on CDs, do they? There is only one DVD I don't want to wait for the 20% sale for, but a bunch of music that I can pick up here that is cheaper than amazon.com (especially box sets I want) and I never recall the 20% working on music before.

VERY good question. I thought it did, but I can't find the last 2 sales from the search so far (even the google). I found the 2007 stuff and it doesn't mention CD's in any way. I was thinking they went through the domain name changes more than a year ago, but that probably doesn't matter either.
Anyone else can find the last 2 sale threads? (i did 'deep discount 2008' among various other combos)

I do know that the first time they offered music CDs I tried to use the 20% discount on music, but the code did not take the discount off.
However, I also know not too long ago ago, I was able to use the 20% discount code on a DVD shelving unit (AND FREE SHIPPING, it was an AWESOME DEAL!) but didn't think of trying it on music at that point.

I've found myself wondering how the strategy of big price rises for highly discretionary goods (DVDs) during a deep recession/depression works. Will Deep Discount--not to mention the DVD makers who've probably boosted prices as well--come out better than if they had maintained the lower prices of last year? Any retail professionals out there who can shed light on this? I know I'm sure not raising my professional rates this year.

CDs have never worked for the 20% off during the 20% sales over the last few years I have frequented the sale. And also not working for books. Used to work for shelving but the last sale did not, I think. A couple years ago did the same as Calhoun07 and got an AWESOME deal on the shelving, 5 foot spinner. How can they ship those for free!!!
But they did do their "DEEP DISCOUNTS" on select books and CDs which were marked really low in some cases, much more than 20%. So even though you could not choose which books and CDs to apply the discount to, they had a big selection discounted.

They must have "fixed the glitch" on the shelving units. I can imagine their horror discovering they picked up the tab on shipping those things. (And I got the biggest one I could get from them...the thing came in two boxes.)
I am going to have to order my CDs before they fix this glitch as well...I should be able to get them before the sale expires. It's just too good of a deal to pass up, and the plus side is the box sets I want are already cheaper than I can find anywhere else at their regular prices!

I remember during the last 25% off sale DD removed certain big ticket sets from the sale. Anyone knows whether the complete Combat! set was one of them?
They have the best price right now for $203. Checking through older bargains it has been had for as low as $153. That is about the same as getting it for 25% off based on the current price. However, that's also based on them having the 25% off sale coming up, the product is included, and they don't raise it some just before going on sale.
Otherwise, I could get it now with the 10% off for $183 knowing I would have it. That's averaging about $18 for each volume of each season. Not bad but not the best. Hate these decisions.

People are now refering to DD's past sales as 25% sales. The only 25% off sale was the last one. It was an aberration that flew in the face of about a dozen previous sales that were consistently (only) 20% off. And it happened partly in response to a shockingly percipitous decline in consumer spending across the whole economy.
Since that last sale, we've already seen one MAJOR electronics/media retailer go OoB. I just don't see how in this climate we can expect business as usual with ANY retailer going forward.
I don't recall DD EVER having a blanket xx% off sale apart from the June/Nov. sales. This is out of character for them and could definitely be a harbinger of a change coming. I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but as someone who has watched the ratio of bitching vs buying lists posted in the "DD Sale On!" threads go up exponentially in the last couple years, I won't be surprised when they do pull the plug on them.
There are a few things I'll hold out for a better price (somewhere) on, but I'm no longer counting on a June sale as a sure thing so I'll be picking up a few things with this code.

04-27-09, 08:24 AM
Paul SD, that's basically why I'm considering this one even at a lesser percentage off. It is harder to predict going forward. However, I just picked up a boat load of CBS/P TV titles on sale at Amazon this past month. They equated to about 50% off of list price, which would have been equivalent to about 25% off at DD's typical online price.
So while some may be digging their heels in, others seem to be going on with business as usual or having even more sales. So the only thing we probably do know, is the we don't know. But it is such a big revenue builder for DD. It's hard to think that they wouldn't proceed. My guess is that when "push comes to shove" they have it but raise the prices again on some and maybe even more titles prior to the sale.

In doing the weekly "one-stop-shop" threads, I've noticed that DeepDiscount's prices on new releases have been awful the last six months. They have the highest price on pretty much every new release.
I swear they used to be the cheapest, even without the bi-annual sales, but they are the complete opposite now, at least on new releases.

I think they still guarantee the lowest price online though. You can get them that way by calling and getting a price adjustment. I think they're realizing that people are too lazy to bother. Though keep in mind sometimes they are cheapest by nature of the the free shipping (e.g. title is $3 cheaper at Amazon but with shipping it is .50 more than DD's price). Their prices only have to beat the next lowest price online so why wouldn't they maintain their price just under all online competitors? If their prices are getting higher, that must mean that all online retailer prices have gone up too.

^ No, they are pricing things consistently $5 or more higher than the online prices at Amazon, Wal-mart, and Best Buy.
This week for example, in the ten items we compare, they are the highest in all ten. $5-9 more in eight cases, $4 in one case, and are only slightly competitive with the X-Men sets at $20 each. And it is the same every week. Even factoring in shipping, they are never cheapest. Even factoring in the probable future 25% off, they are often not the cheapest. Sure, I guess you could still do the pricematch routine, but they only match, right? Not beat?

My recollection is that they've always been higher on new releases. In all the years I've been buying from them (at least 5 years), I don't recall ever buying a new release. It has always been the older catalog releases I've purchased from them where their prices were either just lower from the get go, or I purchased during one of their many sales, B1G1 deals. Also, I usually don't mind waiting a little longer using free shipping on older catalog titles.
Now it does appear that their deals are getting progressively less for each of the past few years. To the point of increasing prices on some titles just before one of the big sales. Based on the better support and return policies of Amazon and more comparitable pricing I'm finding I'm making less and less purchases from DD and more from Amazon.

No Blu-ray? Well, that saved me a lot of time.
There was one Blu-ray title in my order and the discount was inclusive of it. Not only that, but it also was applied to one title that was a pre-order, as well as a title that was already on sale.
However when I saw it being applied to the pre-order, I checked to see if it would work on another pre-order (this time a Bd) and it didn't, so there may be certain titles that are exempt at this time.

Deep Discount's DVD prices used to be either the same or a little bit more than Amazon's. I was looking at the True Blood and Weeds S4 pre orders in anticipation for the June sale to see if it would be cheaper there or at Amazon. Even with the expected 20% off, buying both from Amazon will still be cheaper, not to mention faster shipping even with the free option.

I've been using DD since 2001 or 2002 and have been ordering (quite a lot usually) in their summer/fall sales since at least 2003. I've also become familiar with other, more studio centric sale patterns in the last few years. At this point last year, there was no 10% off sale. There had been Sony and Paramont catalog sales in the early spring, and May had an MGM/Fox B2G1 sale.
It seems to me that it would make little sense to have a 10% off sale-run it for several weeks- and then four weeks later have the same sale again, this time at 20% off.
Also, if you (DD) were trying to increase your margin by cutting down the discount...what you would NOT do is use an established event setting to substitute an obvious lower discount. That would just piss off your old customers while not offering real incentive for new, potential ones.
Every year I've been wondering if we'd already seen the end of these, and this year I've never seen so many signs seeming to point to the just that conclusion. Last year I dropped about $700 between DD and DVDPlanets June sales. This year I would be hard pressed to order half that-and I think other bigger spenders will be feeling the same- and I think DD is well aware of this. Their margin on these sales is tissue thin. They don't hold them to be generous to us dvd addicts, they hold them to generate new, unique shoppers in the hope they become regular customers. Thing is, casual shoppers have cut back on spending drastically and suddenly. It would be foolish and irresponsible to exhaust capital on advertising when it *may* only realize real dvidends *possibly* at some future point. You could be fully OoB by then.
What's sobering and disappointing to me now is that I have to recalibrate my sense of what a bargain is, and what these things actually cost me. 45% off msrp was possible before with the regular twice yearly sales. Now it's looking like 30-35% off is the most I can plan for. Even 30% off at Amazon gets cut to a 'true' 21% after state tax gets added.

I could be wrong and DD/DVD Planet might hold the summer sale as usual, but with certain items fluctating in price during the sale, it may be a negliable net difference to what I was able to get with this coupon.
The only true barometer of the bargain is % discount off of msrp you actally pay. For me here (with the exception of Blu-rays) it was never lower than 37%, the average around 42%, and with some of the current sale items, the discount was a whopping 69% off.
Unfortunately the Blu-ray discounts just weren't that spectacular...but ultimately still cheaper than I'll be able to get them anywhere else, until a good B2G1 sale comes along (when you factor in sales tax that I'd get hit with at Amazon or Best Buy).
Here are some examples of how it may not pay to wait (and gamble) till June- One boxset with a $65 msrp is $49.36 at DVD Planet, and $45.66 (inc. tax) at Amazon. DD's cost with 10% off came to $37.71...just pennies more than if I'd had a 25% off coupon for DVD Planet. The Fugitive S2 Vol2 is $30.36 at DVD P, 28.81 (w/ tax) at Amazon, and came to $23.31 w/10% off at DD. Even with 25% the difference with DVD Planet would only be a few quarters.
I may end up returning the Bds unopened and gambling on the summer sale still happening...but for the majority of my standard def purchases, the 10% off deal turned out pretty much the equivalent of the past 'big' 20% sales.
And a quick turn around too. I've already gotten most of my orders in from just over a week ago.
