I think (not sure) that the US release to theaters will be subtitled, and we won't get an English dub until the region 1 dvd.

Yes. It remains to be seen when the DVD will be released. Or will plan to do the first Ghibli BD release in the U.S.?
It will open in American theaters on August 14th (at least that's the plan).
That's unlikely, not with this type of cast. The current cast members include Frankie Jonas, Noah Cyrus, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, and Betty White.

If this doesn't get a U.S. Blu-ray release that is an injustice to Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki and all of the animator's involved with this film. I see no reason for it to receive only a DVD release at this point. I just hope Disney get's around to re-releasing the other Ghibli movies in their catalog on Blu-ray as they all deserve the BD treatment. I know I would upgrade them all over time. Spirited Away is one I would pick up the DAY of its release. I wish they would... maybe they will time something like that to coincide with the Ponyo release on DVD/Blu?

Re: Studio Ghibli's "Ponyo" 7/3/2009 in Japan
I hated Earthsea. Ponyo was great. I know some people complained that the movie was aimed to a very young audience, but that's really what I expected. It's on par with the innocence of Totoro but through even younger eyes.
I still gave the film an 8/10, while nowhere near perfect as Miyazaki's previous films, it was a film I want to revisit.
As for putting almost no extras on the 2 disc is pretty low,
and for the 12 and a half hour documentary.... could've been longer

Out today, and got it today. I only got the 2 disc edition, as preorders for the big boxset were gone. But I did get the concert DVD, which I'm thrilled about

I'm going to wait for the HK release. It's way cheaper.

Re: Studio Ghibli's "Ponyo" 7/3/2009 in Japan
I liked it. In my opinion it wasn't Miyazaki's best work, but definately very good. In terms of tone, it was most like My Neighbor Totoro. The R2 from Japan I saw had good video quality and what it depicted visually was excellent. Will be buying it on release date when it comes out in R1-land.
Here's my ranking of Miyazaki-directed films from most favorite to least favorite.
1. Princess Mononoke
2. My Neighbor Totoro
3. Kiki's Delivery Service
4. Spirited Away
5. Ponyo
6. Porco Rosso
7. Laputa (Castle in the Sky)
8. Nausicaa
9. Castle of Cagliostro (Lupin III film made before starting Studio Ghibli)
10. Howl's Moving Castle.

an 8/10. Some people say it's much more "childish" than his previous movies, including Totoro. I guess because there really isn't an adult's point of view in the film. It's pretty much through the eyes of children.
The DTS track is quite good, especially in the storm scenes. Picture quality is pretty much perfect, and I didn't notice any overscan this time.

7/10
Decent Ghibli flick but the characters and situations are not as magical as in the best Miyazaki works. In my opinion the last great Ghibli movie was Spirited Away.
