Do The Right Thing: 2-disk 20th Anniversary Edition (6-30-09)

One of the best films of all time get a new 2-disk dvd release this June.
This is one of my favorite films. So enjoyable, funny and easy to watch no matter how many times I have seen it. I hope these are new features and not just the Criterion 2-disks extras. I would loooooove some new commentary tracks and a new full-length retrospective documentary.

Personally, I'm going to be pissed if Criterion owners get the shaft.

Re: Do The Right Thing: 2-disk 20th Anniversary Edition (6-30-09)

Deep down I get what I was seeing and I liked it up until the only thing that threw me off was...
Spoiler:
Why did Mookie give in to throwing that trash can into Sal's? Wouldn't that just be totally against who he was?
.

if you can answer that, I may just look at the film much differently. I like Spike Lee's films but that part just threw me off. Maybe I didn't listen to something around that point or literally looked away for a second too long. Gotta say that intro was pretty cool...just cool.

Spoiler:
The film was released to protests from many reviewers, including Joe Klein in New York magazine; it was openly stated in several newspapers that the film could incite black audiences to riot. No such riots occurred, and Lee criticized white reviewers for assuming that black audiences were incapable of restraining themselves while watching a fictional motion picture.

One of many questions at the end of the film is whether Mookie 'does the right thing' when he throws the garbage can through the window, thus inciting the riot that destroys Sal's pizzeria. The question is directly raised by the contradictory quotations that end the film, one advocating non-violence, the other advocating violent self-defense in response to oppression. Spike Lee himself, however, has stated that only white viewers ask this question. Lee believes the key point is that Mookie was angry at the death of Radio Raheem, and that viewers who question the riot's justification are implicitly valuing white property over the life of a black man. Mookie tells Sal to "Motherfuck a window. Radio Raheem is dead". However, some of the other characters in the film, such as Da Mayor, Mother Sister and Mister Seņor, disapproved of the riot.

This is one of my top 5 favorite films. I would be hard pressed to see a reason to replace my Criterion, but if it manages to top it, I'll certainly add it to the collection

I never got the Criterion version, so it depends on what this one has.

Re: Do The Right Thing: 2-disk 20th Anniversary Edition (6-30-09)

This are the extras for the Blu-ray, so I imagine some are going to be on the DVD:
Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring the Spike Lee film 'Do the Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition' to Blu-ray on June 30th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. The film will be presented on a BD-50 featuring 1.85:1 1080p VC-1 video accompanied by a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

Extras for this release include:

* BD-LIVE: Access the BD-Live Center through your Internet-connected player to get even more content, watch the latest trailers, and more!
* Do The Right Thing: 20 Years Later: New retrospective documentary with the cast and crew
* Deleted & Extended Scenes: 11 newly discovered scenes cut from the final version of the film
* 20th Anniversary Edition Feature Commentary by Director Spike Lee
* Feature Commentary by Director Spike Lee, Cinematographer Ernest Dickerson, Production Designer Wynn Thomas, and Actor Joie Lee
* Behind the Scenes: Spike Lee's personal video footage from the set of the film
* Making Do the Right Thing: In-depth documentary on the making of the film
* Cannes 1989 – Follow the film's triumphant screening at the prestigious Cannes Film as Do the Right Thing energizes and astonishes audiences with its bold message.

Re: Do The Right Thing: 2-disk 20th Anniversary Edition (6-30-09)

Looks like this is only missing "Introduction to the Supplements by Spike Lee", "Back to Bed-Stuy" (about 5 minutes), "Lee's Last Word" (about 6 minutes), "Fight the Power" (long version, about 7 minutes) music video with Lee's introduction and the booklet from the Criterion edition. This new SE has all the others in addition to the three major new ones (Lee's new commentary, new deleted scenes and new documentary), so this sounds like a fairly awesome package.

FYI, Universal already issued Do the Right Thing anamorphically in the Spike Lee Joint Collection with Clockers, Jungle Fever, Crooklyn and Mo Better Blues. They are flippers, though.

This looks like a pretty damn good special edition. I might be picking this one up.

I know that this isn't a thread about the movie itself but some of that made me a little upset.

Those features sound Kick-ass. This looks like one of the best disks announced for this year yet.

I'm hoping for some sort of garbage-can packaging.

Sounds tempting, but I'll just Netflix this and stick with my Criterion.

I have the Criterion set, which I'm definitely going to keep. I'll probably pick up the Blu-Ray release of this, though...

To me the issue really is:

Spoiler:
How did the film develop that Mookie cared a bit for Radio Raheem? Did they hang out together? No. It's not a matter of valuing "white property" over a man's death it's the reality that Radio Raheem's death connects meaningfully to Ray's Pizza, it doesn't. Bottom line is that controversy sells more tickets and Spike Lee went for the cash.

That doesn't take away from the tremendous performances and the beautiful cinematography, but it is what it is.
